Join the Movement Against Recycling Contamination

What is recycling contamination?Recycling contamination occurs when non-recyclables are placed in the recycle cart. These items include trash, food waste and liquids.

Why keep recycling free of contamination?Over the past year, the recycling industry has been adjusting to a series of changes regarding the global recycling market. China has implemented multiple amendments to policies relating to recycling imports. These updates include new standards for recyclables which require less than .5% contamination in the recycling. Due to these changes, we must improve the overall quality of recyclables across the globe.

How contaminated is recycling currently?1 in 4 items placed in the recycling cart are non-recyclable. These items range from trash, food, liquids, household chemicals and medical waste. These non-recyclable items could threaten the safety of workers, shut down an entire recycling facility and ultimately inhibit the ability of products to be recycled.

Recycling Do’s and Don’ts•Do recycle all empty bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard.•Do keep foods and liquids out of recycling.•Don’t include food soiled items – they can turn an entire load of recycling into trash.•Don’t add sharp or dangerous materials like needles and electronics – they can cause injury to our workers.•Don’t include bulky items like propane tanks or construction debris.

As you clean your closets to make room for the new things received over the holidays, consider donating all gently- used clothing and toys to those who could benefit from these items. This is a great way to help divert waste from the landfill and help those in need.
