FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

September 2019

Do you remember reading about Solomon in the Old Testament. He had a spiritual problem. He was the new king of Israel and needed God’s help. In Gibeon, a city north of Jerusalem, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night and said, “Ask what I shall give you.” 1 Kings 3:5 ESV Solomon’s response was impressive. “Give your servant therefore and understanding mind to govern your people.” 1 kings 3:9 ESV In other words, Solomon asked for WISDOM! Have you ever asked God for wisdom? Asking for wisdom worked very well for Solomon. Because he just asked for wisdom do God’s work and not selfish wants he was given wisdom and much more than he asked for…. much more!

This wisdom is such a gift that its value is beyond compare. As we follow King Solomon’s life we see he was respected by most, he built the temple and a palace, and people would come from far and wide to hear his thoughts on a subject. He also had incredible wealth. What a guy.

The wisdom that Solomon was given was not just for him to do God’s work, but for each of us as well. If we find that we are faced with a spiritual problem in life, we have a way to get help. By asking for God’s wisdom during troubling times, we unleash his great power to give us discernment. Otherwise, by trying to solve spiritual problems by ourselves, we find that we are out gunned and without the only one that can solve the issues at hand. Just like Solomon, spiritual problems still require a spiritual response.

Talk to God, I know he’s listening.Be Blessed!PW

The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) gives a clear picture of God’s desire for us to help those in desperate need wherever we find them. After describing how the Samaritan rescued a hurting man whom others had passed by, Jesus told His hearers, “Go and do likewise.” For over 40 years, Samaritan’s Purse has done our utmost to follow Christ’s command by going to the aid of the world’s poor, sick, and suffering. We are an effective means of reaching hurting people in countries around the world with food, medicine, and other assistance in the Name of Jesus Christ. This, in turn, earns us a hearing for the Gospel, the Good News of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

As our teams work in crisis areas of the world, people often ask, “Why did you come?” The answer is always the same: “We have come to help you in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Our ministry is all about Jesus—first, last, and always. As the Apostle Paul said, “For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5, NIV).Mission Statement

Between the Nine and Eleven

Non-Lutherans, heathens and liberal psychologists are puzzled why Lutherans have to be served a little lunch between the 9 and 11 o'clock services. Some argue it's heredity, others say it's environmental, and the cynics say it's just a habit.

Ole Axelson, a baptized and confirmed Lutheran can't understand what the fuss is all about. "That's nothing to get excited about," he said. "The mind hears the words 'vaer sa god', and the stomach says it's time for lunch. It's as easy as that." Lena, his wife, says it's Biblical. "Jesus stopped his services so his disciples could gather fish and bread for everyone to eat. If it was good enough for the Lord, it's good enough for me," she said.
