TAHLEQUAH CHAMBER CONNECTIONPAGE 2 JANUARY 2019

Message from the PresidentI hope everyone had a wonderful

Christmas and New Year holiday! 2018 has been a good year for the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce. And I look forward to 2019 being an even better year.

During 2018 the Chamber has imple-mented many programs designed to pro-vide our business association members with more value. As I recapped the year, I am surprised by the programming we have added…and wondered when our staff slept!

In May 2018, the board of directors set key priorities, including the establish-ment of numerous committees to achieve our goals. I would like to take this oppor-tunity to offer my sincere thanks to the committee chairs for giving of their time this past year to make things happen.

CINDY L. MORRIS, PRESIDENT

TAHLEQUAH AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A.M. Live NetworkingThe Tahlequah Area

Chamber of Commerce always strives to offer the best opportunities for your business and staff to grow within the community. One of the best ways for growth is introducing your busi-nesses to community members who might be unaware of everything you offer. The A.M. Live is the newest addition to the Chamber’s net-working opportunities.

On the second Friday of every month the Tah-lequah Area Chamber of Commerce travels to member businesses around town to pro-vide a fun early morn-ing networking op-portunity. The month of December took us to Arvest’s Downtown Branch where we were joined by 8 new first-time businesses, along with several veteran companies as well.

Dana Kellner, Real Estate Agent with Prop-

erty Solutions and a Membership Develop-ment Committee mem-ber stated, “I’ve been to every A.M. Live since its inception and it has become one of the big ‘do not misses’ on my calendar. The value of networking and knowl-edge about our com-munities’ industry and growth is invaluable!” Since Dana has started to attend regularly, she often invites new mem-bers to attend with her!

Join us January 11 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. at First United Meth-odist Church for A.M. Live sponsored by First United Methodist Church and AAA Busi-ness Systems. Come anytime between 8- 9 a.m. Can’t be there at 8 a.m., then come any-time between 8-9 a.m. It is a come and go event or stay the whole hour. Bring your busi-ness cards and be ready to mingle!

BUSINESS RECRUITMENT IS A TOP PRIORITY

During 2019, the Chamber will focus on strengthening the local economy in many ways and providing oppor-tunities to our business members through a vari-ety of programming.

In January, a key in-gredient to growing the local economy is de-veloping an Economic Development program. Our Economic Develop-ment Committee is or-ganized and will meet in

January to evaluate Tah-lequah’s needs and then begin developing a plan of action.

During the organi-zation meeting, it was unanimously agreed that Tahlequah must develop a business recruitment strategy for our future. It was agreed that we need new businesses and new jobs in Tahlequah. The Chamber and area part-ners are committed to making this happen.

In 2016, the Tahle-quah Area Chamber of Commerce imple-mented a beautifica-tion project called My-Tahlequah. Projects during the past two years included a Spring and Fall Clean-up.

Beginning in 2019, the MyTahlequah ini-tiative will begin to expand beautification of Tahlequah and to strengthen our pride in our community and area.

On April 13, the Chamber will host the Spring Cleanup with focus on beautification projects and cleanup of specific roadways and areas. The goal is to develop a list of projects during the next couple of months and recruit volunteer

individuals, clubs, as-sociations, non-prof-its, church groups, and companies to partici-pate in the cleanup day. Our goal is to entice 500 people to join us in making our communi-ty shine this spring. If interested in signing up to volunteer, go to www.tahlequahcham-ber, click events and click on MyTahlequah to access a volunteer signup form.

The Chamber is now accepting beautifica-tion projects to be con-sidered for the April 13 event. If you know of an area that needs to be beautified or have an idea of a beautifi-cation project, post it on the MyTahlequah Facebook page or send an email to cindy@tah-

lequahchamber.com.In addition, the My-

Tahlequah Committee is working on plans for a 5K Plogging event that will include a 5K Run while cleaning up specific roadways. Another component of the initiative is to incorporate a student education series to enhance pride in our children by teaching them the importance of litter control, recy-cling and more.

Arielle Barnett (Bank of Cherokee County) and Allie Ma-haney (Century 21 Wright Real Estate) serve as co-chairwom-en of the MyTahle-quah Committee. Feel free to visit with them about ideas and proj-ects, too.

In its mission to bolster the eco-nomic development of the city and its surroundings, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce has developed a live map which fea-tures available commercial retail properties. This map features mark-ers which contain information such as the realtor contact information, square footage, and pictures of the property. The map is live, mean-ing you can actively zoom in and scroll through it, much like Google Earth. This live map will be updated routinely to keep the commercial property availability fresh for busi-nesses who are looking to settle in Tahlequah.

This live map can be viewed at http://www.tahlequahchamber.com/economic-development.html

If you would like to list your available property on this live map, please send property details, con-tact information and photos of the property to [email protected]

A special Thank You to Ed Bray for serving as the Tahlequah Christmas Pa-rade Grand Marshal.

Ed has lived an im-pressive life defying all odds several times. Bray stated, “I can only thank my pal upstairs for keep-ing me safe.” Ed was in the Army for 3 years and

was discharged with 100% disability. He’s tru-ly a miracle! He was told he couldn’t have children due to injuries in combat and now has 7 kids, 18 grandkids and 18 great grandkids. He is so proud of each one and is always ready to tell you all about them!

Mr. Bray has received many awards. These awards include 2 Purple Hearts, A Bronze Star, In-vasion of Europe Badge, Combat Infantry Badge and a D-Day Badge. “I’ve got so many medals, I can’t remember them all!” Bray said.

Mr. Bray currently lives

in Cookson where he re-tired in 1982 from Tinker Air Force Base.

He was illiterate until the age of 89. He learned how to read from Toby Thompson with NSU Lit-eracy Department. Mr. Bray speaks French. He holds friendships all over the world but most of all

Ed Bray loves his family and thanks God everyday for the life he has been given.

“The Tahlequah Chamber was honored to have Mr. Bray as our Grand Marshal this year,” stated Alicia McDowell, Event Coordinator for the Chamber.

Speaking of attracting visitors to the ev-er-changing beauty of Tahlequah, the 2019-2020 Visitor’s Guide is almost complete and ready to go to press! We are on schedule for these entic-ing brochures to be on the shelves by January! This passion driven project has required many intense hours of committee involvement, hard work, creativity and dedication. Building this strong visual voice enables us, as a community, to further entice visitors to embrace and create memories made to last a lifetime!

December was bursting with activities for local community members and visi-tors, alike. The Tahlequah Tourism Depart-ment shared local events and activities with tourists from Stillwater all the way to Great Britain! It gives the department great plea-sure to share our passion for this amazing community through building visitor tour-ism packages! When a visitor enters the foy-er of the Chamber of Commerce, the Tour-ism staff leaps into action. The department

prepares an individual visitor package that encompasses the most that Tahlequah has to offer! This opportunity allows a warm interaction between staff and visitors, bringing a newfound awareness of ad-venture and indulgence.

Social media has remained strong with our Christmas Elf promotion, “A Tahlequah Christmas Story”. If you haven’t seen this four-part Facebook video series, please check it out! It is a fun and clever series showcasing local shopping, dining, and lodging. Current-

ly, there is a weekly Facebook poll allowing followers social interaction and gives local opinions of “The BEST of …..Tahlequah”! The promotion was designed as an interac-tive platform giving visitors, and locals, the BEST ideas of what to do while in Tahlequah! “Do what the locals do!” Facebook promo-tions have captured the attention of all ages and is reaching 15,228 more followers than last year at this time. Instagram is reaching 400 more followers than 2017 with Twitter numbers down by 1013 from last year.

The Tourism Department is excited for the many adventurous opportunities in store for the future! Download our city app “Tour Tahlequah” for all upcoming events and activities.
