Brothers and Sisters,

As Jesus taught his first disciples the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) he gave

us a blueprint of how we are to live as his followers that we should cultivate Christian virtues in our words and actions.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they

shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

In short we are called to model our lives on that of Christ as we strive to love God and our neighbor. As we approach Super Bowl Sunday may our prayers and works focus on the victims of human trafficking that our brothers and Sisters may be set free and restored to their families.

May the Holy Spirit guide us as we mature to be the disciples he desires.

In the love of Jesus,Fr. Philip Wilhite, Pastor

Hermanos y hermanas,

Today’s Liturgy

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we gather at God’s invitation, we continue our Ordinary Time reflections on discipleship today with Jesus’ teaching of the Beatitudes. How blessed we are to know that God loves even the least of us and wants all of us to live by the law of love. May our prayer today be for the grace to live the Beatitudes as Christ desires that we do.

Jottings from Father Joseph Beatitude in Marriage

In his book, "On this Day", Carl D. Windsor includes

this anecdote: Even the most devoted couple will experience a "Stormy" bout once in a while. A grandmother, celebrating her golden wedding anniversary, once told the secret of her long and

happy marriage. "On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband's faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook," she said. A guest asked the woman what some of the faults she had chosen to overlook were. The grandmother replied, "To tell you the truth, my dear, I never did get around to listing them. But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, 'Luckily for him that's one of the ten!'"

Today, the words of the Beatitudes invite us to consider anew our dependence on God, to acknowledge Him as the Supreme Authority in our lives and to recognize in Him the Source of our identity and happiness.

A Steward's Way A Steward's Way

What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.Disciples as Stewards - Let us begin with being

a disciple—a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples. This has astonishing implications:• Mature disciples make a conscious decision

to follow Jesus, no matter what the cost.• Christian disciples experience

conversion—life shaping changes of mind and heart—and commit their very selves to the Lord.

• Christian stewards respond in a particular way to the call to be a disciple. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our

understanding of our lives and the way in which we live.

Jesus' disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another. We look to the life and teaching of Jesus for guidance in living as Christian stewards.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

That we strive to put God first in all circumstances.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3

This one confuses people. Replace the word “humble” for “poor” and it makes more sense. People that are humble recognize their dependence on God and trust that He will provide all that they need. Unfortunately, for many of us, pride and ego enters our lives and we think we can live without God. Remember – God first in all circumstances.

Vocations Ministry CONGRATULATIONS! to the newly ordained permanent deacons of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. On January 14, eighteen men from all walks of life were ordained in a ceremony presided over by Daniel Cardinal DiNardo. Their ordination marked the end of six years of rigorous study and pastoral formation. They will now join more than 420 permanent deacons stationed throughout the archdiocese and serving as liturgists, homilists, catechists, ministers, and even administrators in our parishes. They will assist bishops and priests at the celebration of the Eucharist, assist and bless marriages, and preside over baptisms and funerals. Their decision to choose this ministry is a blessing for all of us in the pews. And, as we offer our congrats for these dedicated men, let us also pray for our own Jeff Borski, who is currently studying to become a permanent deacon! As he and wife Eileen travel this road, we want to lift them up in prayer!
