THE TURNING POINT (Virtual Book-Study Group) Eight Encounters With Jesus That Will Change Your Life

The Gospel of John was written with a special purpose – so that you and I can encounter Jesus personally. In The Turning Point, a study by Dr. Allen Hunt, you will focus on eight people who meet Jesus in the nitty gritty of everyday life. The study of these encounters guides us on a meaningful journey to help us know Jesus more intimately in our own life. Please join us (virtually) for an eight week study beginning on Thursday, July 9th at 11 am, continuing every Thursday morning for the remaining seven weeks. Please contact the front

office or email Katherine at [email protected] to enroll. Books are available through both Dynamic Catholic and Amazon.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest members of our St. Francis of Assisi community—newcomers, newly-registered and those through Baptism! We are delighted that you have found a home in which to worship and continue to raise your family.

SLOW & STEADY...

Embracing a Discipleship Lifestyle

In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew, our Lord shares the Parable of the Sower who scatters seed on many different kinds of land. This is a wonderful analogy for a discipleship way of life, demonstrating the slow and steady, yet powerful effect that such a lifestyle can have on those who fully embrace it.

In this parable, some of the seeds land on a path where birds carry them off before they can take root. Other seeds land on rocky ground with little soil…as soon as things begin to heat up, they get scorched and die. Then there are seeds that land on soil cluttered with thorns which choke the seeds just as they begin to grow strong. Finally, there are seeds that land on deep and healthy soil. These seeds produce abundant fruit. This is where a life of intentional discipleship comes into play: When we give the best of our time, talent and treasure to serve God and others, we create lives filled with that rare “good soil” needed for the Kingdom of God to thrive.

Discipleship living removes the “rocks” of mistrust as we develop an unshakable faith that God will always provide for our needs. It clears away the “thorns” of worldly ambition that make us self-centered, fill us with needless anxiety, and stifle our focus on God. Discipleship living requires a deep reliance on the Word of God and the sacraments which continuously nourish and fertilize the soil of our lives.

Let us deepen our commitment to this intentional way of life, allowing the Sower to do His work in us,

SLOWLY and STEADILY.

The Master Gardener will surely produce

miraculous fruits through us.

DESPACIO Y ESTABLE...

Let the Word of God transform you! Adults of all education levels are welcome to join us for the third year of the

Catholic Biblical School in the Diocese of Reno.

Learn how to interpret the Bible in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church and in light of modern Biblical scholarship. Experience fellowship with others

who also desire a better understanding of the Sacred Scripture.

Offered by The University of Dallas in the Diocese of Reno

We assume that by September we will be able to meet in person, even if masks and social distancing are still required. In spring of 2020

we did have to rely on the professor taping his talks rather than speaking to us live.

Brochures and registration forms may be downloaded at the diocesan website (renodiocese.org), under Our Works, then under the Lay Ministry tab: https://renodiocese.org/home/ourworks/lay-ministry-leadership-development/ Or, you can contact Dr. Lauri Anne Reinhart at the diocese, ([email protected]; 775-326-9431), and ask to have the application form and brochure emailed or mailed to you. The book list for the upcoming year is also on the website. This year the focus is Exile & Restoration: PROPHETS, LAMENTATIONS, RUTH, SONG OF SONGS, PSALMS. We hear the psalms every week; we hear the prophets throughout the year, is it time for you to understand those books of the Bible at a deeper level and apply them to your own life? It’s an amazing program! CBS is offered on Thursday nights, beginning September 10, from 6-8 PM at three different sites:

Our Lady of the Snows, Reno St Robert Bellarmine, Fernley St Joseph’s, Elko

Please send your registration form by Monday, August 24 so we know how many to expect at each site. Because this is a college-level class, the annual cost is $550 per person plus books. Taking it for credit or audit is the same cost. Full tuition must be paid by September 19th (before the third class). “This is a four-year program, and participants may attend any or all of the four years.
