CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES Green Building, Smart Grids, Small Plants for Renewable Energy Production

MISSION INDIA Italian Government and Regions

13-16 December 2009

Seminar Topics

The meeting is focusing on integrated systems at the local scale. In Italy we are engaged in developing a market system for green tech (off-grid solutions) in villages and small communities (i.e. isolated in the mountains or wanting to follow a new “pattern of urbanisation” downtown). Solar devices, integrated with geothermal solutions, heat pumps, biomasses co-generators, wind power systems, etc... are becoming common investments. The challenge is: How can we upgrade existing systems? How can we integrate them in a national web? How can we create maintenance and financial tools, in order to assisting distributed producers?

Co-generation at a very small scale (1 Kwt + 1 Kwe) is attracting greater attention among final consumers, local utilities, entrepreneurs and investors. In the last few years we could see the return of some abandoned technologies: Stirling engines installed on fire-burners, solar panels mixing up photovoltaic and concentration devices, small energy plants using waste as a renewable fuel, fuel cells producing electricity inside heaters, hydrogen back-up systems and portable generators…

Now the matter is how to organise a progressive integration of these new “green” technologies in existing grids and infrastructures. Smart grids should be designed and neuron chips should be diffused, in order to provide interoperability to a greater number of existing devices. Moreover, a progressive substitution of traditional “energy consuming” products and processes should be planned.

In the field of building construction a number of innovations are expected in the near future, in terms of energy saving and environment compliance. The Green Building Council International movement is creating a worldwide competence network that is close to create a completely new market system in real estate and construction (starting by large and costly facilities, but with rapid “spillovers” in contiguous fields of the same business).

The seminar wants to compare existing experiences in Italy and India, providing the participants with a general framework on existing trends and case studies.

MISSION INDIA Italian Government and Regions

13-16 December 2009

SEMINAR TOPICS

“Distretti, Reti, Filiere” (Industrial Cluster, Supply Value Chain, Business) definition of the three realities and analysis of coexistence and interaction between these ways of organizing companies. Italian actual cases of Industrial Cluster, Supply Value Chain, Business Network” Focus on extra-local long network cooperation: the district opens and the companies create technical, productive and commercial cooperation with similar companies, sometimes even competitors, located in the area where the company producing the final product for the market is located (e.g. auto districts, household appliance district, aeronautics district): the above happen especially in the emerging countries (e.g. auto sector in Egypt, Brazil, Balkan, Latin America). To be able to do so the company has to be structured in a specific way: who is helping the company in this changing process (sometime gradually sometime very fast?). Policy Makers: necessity to support the companies located in the “Industrial Cluster, Supply Value Chain, Business Network” through two different approaches:

1) To support the Asking: contributes to the companies for projects such us: • Innovation of their technological/R&D • Innovation of their organization • Quality certification: product, process, system (environmental and ethical included) • Qualification of human resources

2) To support the Offer: through agencies and proper structures (e.g. center for the

transfer of technologies allocated on the territory where the companies are based) offering the above mentioned services.
