Randy Frye, Senior PastorPastor Cornered

In the book “Mornings with Henri Nouwen,” the following devotion appears:

“The question is…’Are you in love with Jesus?’ Perhaps another way of putting the question would be: ‘Do you know the incarnate God?’ In our world of loneliness and despair, there is an enormous need for men and women who know the heart of God, a heart that forgives, that cares, that reaches out and wants to heal. In that heart there is no suspicion, no vindictiveness, no resentment, and not a tinge of hatred. It is a heart that wants only to give love and receive love in response. It is a heart that suffers immensely because it sees the magnitude of human pain and the great resistance to trusting the heart of God who wants to offer consolation and hope.”

Indeed, our observance of Lent must be more than ashes and the practice of “giving up something.” In the journey that will lead us to a cross and then an open tomb, we have an opportunity to once more reflect upon the unfathomable…God’s love. We have an opportunity to experience the incredible…the resurrecting power of Christ. We have an opportunity to be filled with a presence that accepts, forgives, heals and empowers. With every step of that wonderful journey, we have another chance to fall in love with Jesus once more.

I hope you will join us on this journey and rediscover the love of your life!

In Him, Randy

Preparing for Lent

Lent is the forty-day season before Easter in which Christians are invited to pray and prepare for the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Morning.

The forty days, excluding Sundays, are connected to many events in the Bible, but par-ticularly to the period Jesus spent preparing for his ministry in the wilderness - where he fasted, prayed and endured the temptations of the devil. Accordingly, Christians are invited to use this season of preparation as a time to examine our relationship with God in light of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection through introspection, self-examination and repentance.

Many Christians choose to give something up or to take something on during Lent as a central spiritual practice of preparation. One way to do this is by reading a Lenten devotional. We’ve taken the liberty of listing three options that we recommend.

God For Us, Rediscovering the Meaning of Lent and Easter, Multiple AuthorsLent and Easter fully reveal for us the character of God in all of life – a God who brings healing, wholeness and liberation. This is a beautiful book written with mature insights from renowned preachers and theologians who remind us that the light of God shines even in the darkest places.

Power and Passion, Six Characters in Search of Resurrection, Samuel WellsSamuel Wells, who formerly served as the Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, takes us deep into the story of the Cross and Easter through the stories of six of the primary characters. This is a powerful study of Easter that illuminates the central characters in this story.

Lent for Everyone, N.T. WrightN.T. Wright provides an accessible daily devotional with a scripture reading, reflection and prayer for each day during Lent. This is a wonderful companion to give you daily insights and inspiration as you journey with Jesus and his disciples to the Cross.

Sometimes it is easy to feel helpless in the midst of all the needs and concerns in our church, community, nation and world. Many of us often wonder if there is a way that we can make a difference.

One of the most significant ways you can make a difference in your life and in the lives of others is through prayer.

You may not be aware of it, but each Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. a group of church members meets in Room 138, across from Wesley Hall, to pray for the needs of our church and our world.

Even if you aren’t comfortable praying aloud, we would love to have you join us as an important part of our ministry. Your prayers and your commitment to pray do make a difference and are vital in God’s work in our world.

If you have prayer requests, you are encouraged to share them by contacting Tom Harrington (687-9460, [email protected]), Mary Bolton (687-6277) or the church office (689-5175). For more information, please be in touch with Tom or Mary.

Save The Date

Mark your calendars for the rummage sale on Saturday, May 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Remember as you do spring cleaning to save donations for the sale.

Congregational Care Challenge: “Lift Up Instead of Give Up”

Many of us “give up something” for Lent. Our challenge to you is that we take on a discipline for Lent. Instead of “giving up” for Lent consider “lifting up” for Lent.

The Congregational Care Committee invites you to take on the discipline of getting to know some of our church family that you may not know or get the opportunity to meet. We have many members that are not able to join us for regular church activities. We would ask that you step up to the challenge by signing up below to be assigned a person to make at least a weekly contact with or more as you get to know them. Pray for your person, send cards, make calls or visits. Please help us to “lift up” these friends.

You may take the challenge as an individual or family. To sign up please call the church office at 689-5175.

Listen to FCUMC Sermons Online

You can listen to sermons from FCUMC online by visiting www.soundcloud.com/fcumc.

The Scholarship Committee appreciates support to help meet the needs of our students and their families. Please consider giving to the scholarship fund when you are making contributions.

Easter LilliesEach year Easter Lillies fill the sanctuary and The Journey in honor and memory of our loved ones. Easter Lilies may be purchased in honor or in memory or loved one for $10 each. You may pick up a form at the church office to place your order for lillies. (Payment must accompany the order being placed.) All orders must be in the church office no later than noon on Sunday, April 13.

Praying the Psalms StudyBy Amy AycockFor Lent this year, to go along with the sermon series on the psalms, I thought I would read a book called Praying the Psalms, by Walter Brueggemann (also available for Kindle). This book is all about how the Psalms help us develop an authentic language for praying to God and encourage us to cultivate a deep awareness of the God who truly hears our prayers. If this sounds like something that you’d like to work on during Lent as well, I invite you to join me Sundays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Room 137 beginning March 16, for a total of five weeks. For questions or to register contact [email protected] or call the church office.

Valentine’s Fun

More than 300 people attended FCUMC’s annual Fa-ther-Daughter Valentine’s Day dance on Feburary 8. It was a great night of celebration and dancing!

New GriefShare Group

“I am so thankful for the ministry of the GriefShare program of our church. It was so comforting to sit in a room with others who knew ‘exactly what I was going through.’ Our losses may have been different, but we were the same. God led me into GriefShare, and I am so thankful He did.” -Donna Bell Daller

No matter what the circumstances, recovery from grief is a painful process for nearly everyone who has experienced the death of a loved one. You may have dealt or are dealing with such a loss very well on your own and may not feel the need for additional support. If, however, you find that the going is still rough, perhaps GriefShare can help.

GriefShare is a nondenominational seminar series featuring videos of some of the nation’s foremost experts on grief and recovery who discuss grieving in the light of Christian faith. The videos and discussions with other group members who have also experienced the death of a loved one can provide valuable information and support that may help participants cope with a very difficult time in their lives.

Our church’s next GriefShare group will begin meeting on Sunday, March 9, 3:00-5:00 p. m., in the room 104. There will be 14 weekly sessions, with the last session scheduled for June 8. John Needy, former Director of Congregational Care for our church, will facilitate the group. There will be a $15 charge for the participant’s guide. Childcare will be available if needed for children through 5th grade at a cost of $5.00 per child per session. Interested persons should contact the church office (689-5175) to register.

Lenten Psalm Devotional

Our church family will come together to create a unique and personal reflection on the Psalms during Lent. Each day during Lent, we will be posting a reflection on one of the Psalms written by the FCUMC family online at www.fountaincityumc.org and on Facebook. We will also compile a printed version of the devotional that can be picked up in the church office for those who prefer a hard copy.

This is a great opportunity for us to study and reflect on the Psalms together and to read messages from a variety of FCUMC members. For more information on the project contact Daniel Ogle at [email protected] or call the church office.

Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday, the official beginning of Lent, is on Wednesday, March 5. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday at FCUMC with three worship services:

7:30 a.m. (Chapel)12:00 p.m. (Chapel)

6:45 p.m. (Sanctuary)

We will have Wednesday night dinner but will not have other programming that evening. We hope that you will plan to begin your preparation of the Lenten Season by joining us for one of these services to receive the imposition of the ashes. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day preparation for Holy Week and Easter.
