PROJECT TRIGGER

The Fairfield Data Center houses hundreds of servers and data storage modules including customer account information, 911-emergency, 411-information and the company’s website. This building is mission critical, with high ranking officials of the highest security levels overseeing operations. Power or cooling failures would bring down the website or even interrupt 911 data and communications.

In the event of a commercial power failure, this building is supported by an N+1 redundancy standby power infrastructure. A recent building load study showed that the building load had exceeded their existing N+1 backup system capability. The continued increase in server quantity and building power needs, required an upgrade to the complete backup power system. In addition, as a result of the increased servers being placed on the data floors, more power circuits and cooling was needed to the data floor to support the growth.

TEMPORARY UPS PHASE

As an emergency temporary patch, Roebbelen installed two 550KVA UPS modules with fully enclosed batteries. These were tied into the appropriate switchgear and substations using temporary DLO cable. The DLO cable was run along solid cable racks installed over critical equipment, through fire-rated walls, through various rooms and corridors. All installed safely and quickly.

To cool the temporary UPS units, four 14,000 CFM Computer Room Air Conditioner (CRAC) Units were installed, with chilled water piping installed throughout the building to provide the proper cooling capacity for the UPS units.

The temporary UPS modules would be left in place to support the building before the permanent UPS upgrades were completed. Complete temporary UPS phase took two weeks working nights and weekends, to meet the deadline of having the systems operational.

STANDBY SYSTEM UPGRADE

Two de-commissioned UPS units were shipped in from the Owner’s Florida Data Center. These units were fully refurbished and installed as permanent UPS modules in place of the temporary units. Two sets of 250 full wet cell batteries and racks were installed to accompany the refurbished UPS units. After testing and verification of load support and stability, the temporary UPS units and CRACs were taken offline.

New 1500kW diesel generator set, along with a new 20,000 gallon above ground fuel storage tank were installed to maintain the N+1 redundancy structure with the addition of the UPS modules and batteries. Existing fuel piping and fuel pumps were reconfigured for more efficient fuel delivery. New day-tank controls panels, transformer and all associated exhaust and ventilation for the new generator set were also provided.

In addition, four new 550 KVA UPS modules and 480 total wet cell batteries and racks were installed to assist the other UPS sets in load support. New full substation and static output switchgear lineups were installed for this new UPS string.

All electrical equipment was installed using detailed Method of Procedure steps, during off hours so as not to disrupt critical electrical systems. Coordination with on-site client building engineers was important in scheduling cutovers and tie-ins. Data Center rules dictated cutovers could only occur on certain weekends and times. This

required constant updating of schedule to make the best and most efficient use of time.

To support this increase in heat load from all the new electrical equipment, new cooling system was implemented. It included a 700 ton chiller, 800 ton cooling tower (with Lakos filtration), and all associated chilled water lines and controls panels. In addition, three new air handlers, including new 40,000 CFM fan wall technology, were installed. Each AHU feeding air to an individual room.

DATA FLOOR GROWTH

Continued server additions and expansions required more power and cooling on 1st and 2nd floor raised-floor data floors. Power Distribution Units (PDUs) and Remote Power Panels (RPPs) were bolted throughout the data floors using earthquake bracing, and are ready for new servers and equipment to be connected. Twelve new CRAC cooling units and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) were also installed throughout the data floor in the warmest areas to prevent over-heating of this electrical equipment and provide efficient cooling.

The chilled water piping for the CRAC units and electrical feeds for PDUs, RPPs and CRACs were all installed underneath the raised floor of the data floors. Communication lines and other power feeders reside underneath the floor in a maze of cabling and supports. Any damage to the lines underneath the floors will cause critical loses in information and losses of millions of dollars to the clients and owners. Specific procedures were followed and tight coordination with on-site staff to ensure safe and efficient installation with no power or data interruptions.

UPGRADING EXISTING SITE EqUIPMENT

• Parallel to the electrical and mechanical upgrades, the security card-reader access system was also upgraded to proximity sensor card readers. No security breaches occurred because of our vendor’s strong ability to communicate with the on-site staff of the installation phasing.

• Various existing outdated breakers, relays and panels were replaced. Various existing feeders, panels,

piping and motors were re-configured and re-labeled to better assist the on-site client staff in identifying sources of problems.

MISCELLANEOUS

Weekly project construction meetings were held by Roebbelen with all subcontractors, vendors and Owner’s personnel. The meetings were held every week for over two years. Minutes and action item lists were developed by the Roebbelen team.
