LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters,

First of all, I want to express my sincere gratitude to so many of you who have been keeping me in prayer during my recent surgery and recuperation. While my convalescence continues at home, I am happy to report that the doctors have told me that all continues to go well.

Since this was the first time that I had ever had any kind of surgery under general anesthesia, it was all a very new experience. As I’ve shared with others, the good news is that you feel nothing after you attempt to count to “10” and maybe make it to “3!” The not so good news is that there is no quick and easy way around the recovery and healing period! It just takes time and a great deal of patience. I am grateful to two wonderful care-givers from a local agency that provided very loving and attentive care during the immediate days following the procedure.

The big question, of course, is, ‘did the operation do what it was supposed to do???’ I wish I could give an immediate response but that too will take some time. There are initial indicators that my gait has improved and there is a relaxation in my legs. However, the true test will come in the coming months when the amount of medication going from the pump into my spine is ‘fine tuned’ and I get back into physical therapy. This will take months.

In the meantime, it is my hope to be back to the parish toward the end of the month. I am grateful to Frs. Tim and Mike for all their support and prayers as well as the extra work load this situation has created for them. Their generous hearts and spirits continue to be a blessing to me and to all of us in the parish.

As we begin a new week in Christ, let us commend to the loving mercy of the Savior all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially, Galo Grijalva. May they be at peace.

Always forward! Msgr. Art

CALIFORNIA BISHOPS SUPPORT LIFE AND FAMILY INITIATIVES Support Parental Notification The Bishops of California sup-

port the effort to place an initiative on the November 2012 ballot that will require a doctor to notify parents 48 hours prior to an abor-tion being performed on their minor daughter.

Support Replacing the Death Penalty The Bishops of California support the effort to place an initiative on the November 2012 ballot that will replace the use of the death penalty for a capital crime with the penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Bishop Brown has approved signature gathering at the parish level for both the Parent Notification Initiative and the SAFE California (Death Penalty Initiative) to have these two initiatives on the 2012 General Elec-tion ballot. The Respect Life Ministry will have tables with petitions for you to sign outside the doors of the Basilica after all Masses on Saturday, February 18th and Sunday, February 19th. To confirm if you are a registered voter or what name or address you are registered to vote, you can check it on line at the Registrar of Voters website http://ocvote.com. Once you get into the website, click on “Help Me Register and Vote”; then click on the 2nd option, “Am I registered to vote?” and follow the instructions. Those with no computer access may call 714-567-7600 and after you choose the language option, press “O” for operator and they can check for you. This is a very important effort.

PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

Declaración de la Parroquia de la Misión

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Sant 1:1-11; Mc 8:11-13 Martes: Sant 1:12-18; Mc 8:14-21 Miércoles: Sant 1:19-27; Mc 8:22-26 Jueves: Sant 2:1-9; Mc 8:27-33 Viernes: Sant 2:14-24, 26; Mc 8:34 — 9:1 Sábado: Sant 3:1-10; Mc 9:2-13 Domingo: Is 43:18-19, 21-22, 24b-25; Sal 41 (40); 2 Cor 1:18-22; Mc 2:1-12

¡Siempre adelante! Mons. Art

Retiro de estudiantes del programa de EDGE

¡Soy único/a!
