25th Anniversary SpecialThe summer of 2012 is set to be a significant period of celebration. The next few months will see the country continue to commemorate the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics, and most importantly to us; the 25th anniversary of Miskin Manor Health Club.

The Health Club was established in mid-1985, and has recently undergone a dramatic refurbishment programme. The building has been expanded several times throughout the 25 years, and the investment made throughout this time has been instrumental to Miskin Manor being able to provide a first class facility to offer all its members and the local community.

The centre boasts a gymnasium capable of satisfying both cardio-vascular and endurance enthusiasts. Our swimming pool has proved popular with members and non-members

alike. The pool has proved an ideal host to Swimsafe; a local initiative to improve children’s swimming abilities and increase awareness to the risks involved in the pool. The steam room and sauna has acted as a relaxation hub for members who want to unwind from the strenuous chore of day-to-day activities; especially after a long session in the gym.

Since 1985, countless refurbishments, expansions and maintenance has been carried out on the Health Club; all with the desire to deliver the highest quality of health and fitness in South Wales in mind.

Not only does the health club offer a destination for fitness and leisure enthusiasts alike, but it is slowly becoming a commercial and economic hub of Rhondda Cynon Taff. Over a dozen businesses operate out of Miskin Manor, not including the hotel and health club. Act On Group (Health & Safety), Strictly Dance Ltd (Ballroom & Latin dance classes), Beauty at the Manor (Beauty Therapy & Spa Treatments), and Compass Media Relations (PR & Media Buying) are just some of the businesses that operate out of the idyllic estate.

Gym Buddy SchemeWe’re excited to launch our new Gym Buddy scheme which will operate on our Facebook page.

The scheme is to encourage the members of the gym to organise sessions with friends and fellow users, in order to maximise the experience of Miskin Manor Health Club.

We know that sometimes you need a training partner to help motivate you. There are times when the last thing you feel like doing is going in the gym, especially after a long day in work. The Gym Buddy scheme is designed to not only help motivation, but encourage the social aspect between members.

The scheme will help members organise training sessions, and will hopefully make you friends in the process. Also, the scheme will help members co-ordinate training days for specific exercises in order to use the gym facilities as efficiently as possible, minimising congestion on specific machines and apparatus.

The Gym Buddy scheme is designed to encourage, motivate, and inspire members to use the facilities of the health club to maximise the benefits of membership.

Sports Lunches & Raising Local Funds

We have recently held a few charity events at the manor for a number of different causes.

We held a Rugby Legends Lunch in aid of Pontyclun RFC Mini’s & Juniors on 30 March where a number of ex-Wales Rugby players including Gareth Edwards, Brymor Williams, Tommy David, Ian Stevens, and John Devereux attended the Miskin Manor to raise funds for the local club, and answered a Q&A session with questions from the guests.

An auction was held with donations provided by the Rugby Legends such as signed memorabilia, including a photo of the famous try scored by Gareth Edwards for the Barbarian invitational side against New Zealand in 1977.

Sarah Watts, Conference & Events Age: 28

Where do you live? Ely

Where have you come from (job, not planet)? Village Hotel

What are your views of Miskin Manor? I love it here. There isn’t much the hotel or health club cannot provide. What I love about Miskin Manor is that it is so highly regarded by the local community and South Wales in general.

What is the favourite part of your job?

I know it sounds strange, but I love telling people I work here. I feel really proud to say I work at Miskin Manor, and that isn’t something I’ve ever had before. Also, I love watching all the weddings.

Describe Miskin Manor in one sentence? An idyllic country hotel set in picturesque Welsh countryside, all just a stone’s throw from Cardiff.

What do you like to do outside of work? I adore films. I love nothing better than sitting down to

watch a steamy thriller in the cinema. I don’t even mind going on my own. I also like to discuss eastern European politics with my peers; I love a good debate.

Give us an interesting fact about yourself? I own over 2,000 DVD’s. Also, I am a keen advocate of cheesecake.

We have a member of staff from four different departments giving you an insight to what it is like to work at Miskin Manor.

Holly Masterman, Receptionist Age: 20

Where do you live? Bedwas

Where have you come from (job, not planet)? St. David’s Hotel and Spa

What are your views of Miskin Manor? It’s a gorgeous setting and awesome hotel to work in; everyone is so lovely and helpful since I have started.

What is the favourite part of your job? Meeting new people on a daily basis and getting to see the weddings (giving me ideas for mine in about 30 years, haha).

Describe Miskin Manor in one sentence? A pleasant and laid back work place.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to socialise with my friends, spend time with my family, shop, and have the ‘occasional’ drink with my girls.

Give us an interesting fact about yourself? I spend over £500 per month on hair and beauty products (guilty pleasure).

Family Sports Day - OlympicsMiskin Manor Health Club celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, and it coincides with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year celebrations.

This summer, Miskin Manor Health Club will be celebrating a quarter of a century in business by hosting a family sports day to commemorate the impending Olympics.

The family sports day will take place on Saturday 4th August, starting at 11am and finishing at 5pm, and will include bouncy castles, a BBQ, a falconry display, and a selection of stalls and music.

All Sewn UpFollowing in the footsteps of TV’s Kirsty Allsopp and taking inspiration from the fabulous Cath Kidston ranges, more and more people are dusting off their sewing machines and learning to make gifts, home furnishings and gorgeous clothes for themselves.

With help from established fashion designer, Helen Rhiannon, you too can learn some new skills and join in the homemade sewing trend that is sweeping the nation!

‘All Sewn Up’ was set up in October 2010, providing a wide range of sewing workshops teaching people how to make fashionable and desirable products such as beautiful bags, homely cushions, kitsch snap purses, and much more.

The workshops are now coming to Cardiff, to the beautiful Miskin Manor, which will be the perfect setting for the full sewing experience. Starting in September, Helen will be

running workshops which will run for a full day with light refreshments and an optional Afternoon Tea served in the cosy surroundings of the Manor.

From £85 for the full day, you can choose from the ‘Love Handbags?’ workshop where you can make a stylish clutch bag, tote bag or ‘carry your life in a bag!’ bag, or, the ‘Crazy About Cushions’ workshop

where you can learn to make your own unique cushions for your home or as a gift. They will run from10am until 5pm.

You will learn a wide range of decorative techniques as well as how to make the chosen product in these relaxed and sociable workshops. All materials are provided and instruction packs are available

also. Small classes provide a personal and one to one environment in the luxury of the Miskin Manor grounds.

Dates available: - Sunday September 9th ‘Love Handbags?’ Sunday September 23rd ‘Crazy About Cushions’ Sunday October 14th ‘Love Handbags?’ Sunday October 21st ‘Crazy About Cushions’

Miskin Manor Gym Etiquette In our health club, we believe rules of etiquette should be followed. The social graces

expected in a weight room are a bit different from those expected at the symphony or the

Louvre, but manners are important just the same. If you witness a flagrant etiquette violation, don’t be afraid to inform the club staff. You’re not

being a snitch. The rules are for everyone, and are there to maximise the enjoyment and experience

of all members.

Here are a few rules we expect our members to abide by;Sharing equipment In a gym, cardio and weight equipment are considered communal property, so don’t sit on a machine while you rest between sets. Especially don’t sit there reading a magazine, talking on your phone, or rehearsing an opera. Instead, stand up and let a fellow gym member have a go — let the member alternate sets with you. The same rule applies if you’re using a pair of dumbbells. When you complete a set, place the weights on the floor so someone else can sneak in a set while you rest.

The only time you should retain possession of weight equipment while you rest is when you’re using a barbell stacked with weight plates. Suppose that you’re bench-pressing 100kg and someone else wants to bench-press 60kg, you can see what a hassle it would be for the two of you to work in with each other; between each set, you’d need to slide heavy plates on and off the bar.

Unloading your weight bar After you finish using a bar, leave it completely empty. Don’t assume that everyone can lift the same amount of weight you

can. Removing weight plates from a bar takes a fair amount of strength as well as good technique. Don’t assume that the next person who comes along has the ability (or desire) to clean up after you.

This clear-the-bar rule doesn’t just apply to heavy lifters. Even if you’re using only a light weight, you still need to clear your bar.

Putting weights back where you found them When you’ve removed a weight plate from a bar or when you finish using a pair of dumbbells, return the weights to their designated spot on the rack.Never leave dumbbells or barbells on the floor when you’re finished using them. Someone may trip on the weights. If you leave dumbbells on the floor between sets, criss-cross them or butt them up against the wall or the bench so that they can’t roll away.

Keeping your sweat to yourself Carry a towel and wipe off any bench or machine you use. If you forget to bring a towel, use a spare t-shirt or the paper towels provided

Treating the changing room like your own bathroom Follow these suggestions for changing room etiquette to maintain good relations with your fellow gym mates:

Don’t take a marathon shower if people are waiting. With the exception of sweat, what you take into the shower should come out with you when you leave. Make sure that you remove all your shower supplies and that little pile of your hair from the drain. (Carry a latex glove if needed)

Don’t hog the mirror or the hair blow dryer. If you brush your hair and 200 strands of hair fall on the counter, wipe them off with a paper towel (wipe them into the towel or in to the bin, not on the floor).

Don’t take up three lockers and spread your clothing over the entire bench. Share with others. Shut your locker when you leave.Don’t leave your belongings in lockers overnight unless you have permission from your gym to do so. Most gyms empty out unsanctioned lockers at the end of every day and won’t guarantee the safe return of your personal items.

PRICE PAIN CARE

PATIENCE with PATIENTSRapid results We do not use drugs, needles, hypnosis, talking therapy or manipulation. Our treatments are gentle and safe. Written testimonials often include the words; ‘ I wish I had known about you sooner’.

E-LYBRA is at the forefront of energy medicine which is gaining ground with alternative and enlightened orthodox medical practitioners world-wide. Joseph Price is an expert in this field and has given seminars in the U.S, South America, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the U.K.

E-LYBRA is a British invention which combines information technology with holistic therapies to produce remedies which are automatically transferred to the patient during the therapy session. The

treatment experience is relaxing and promotes feelings of well-being.

We treat conditions such as pain, anxiety, stress, giving up smoking and weight problems. Joseph is also a qualified Bowen Technique practitioner.

SCENAR; Self-Controlling-Energy-Neuro-Adapting-Regulator. The effectiveness of Scenar therapy alone is 90% on average for all conditions; 60% of cases make a complete recovery and in 30% it produces positive

improvements. With Scenar, recovery is achieved on average two to three times faster than normal. For example, a 15 year-old rugby player (an Osprey junior signee) recently presented with a back injury. He had been told he had to rest for four weeks. His was pain-free after two sessions of Scenar therapy. Older injuries take longer to heal. However, acute problems like migraines usually respond relatively quickly.

Scenar therapy provides normalisation of pathological processes over a shorter time.

It has powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and accelerated healing effects.

Mark Evans, Welsh baritone, will be embarking on a 12 week weight programme at Miskin Manor Health Club, overseen by our manager Russell Edwards. His results and gains will be outlined in our next newsletter in September. If you see mark in the gym, give him some encouragement.
