C ongratulations Dr. Nazeeruddin Mohammad!

Cybersecurity Director Appointment

Dr. Nazeeruddin was recently appointed as the Director of PMU Cybersecurity Center and CCES would like to extend

their thanks to PMU Management in the trust that they put in Dr. Nazee-ruddin’s credential and ability in successful running this Center. The cen-ter will host state of the art equipment to support newly offered programs in Cybersecurity at the graduate and undergraduate level. This center will also offer training opportunities to local PMU communities as well as pro-fessional who will be interested in acquiring hands-on experience in vari-ous security area Such as Penetration Testing, Ethical Hacking, etc. Dr. Nazeeruddin is already involved in the setup of this lab as well as outlin-ing the vision for such center.

High Impact Research Performance With his paper titled “A Multi-Tiered Defense Model for the Security Analysis of Critical Facilities in Smart Cities”, which was published in IEEE Access, Dr. Nazeeruddin Mohammad earned the title of the best CCES re-searcher of the month. This paper focused on a hot topic related to Security Analysis in Smart Cities. Dr. Nazeeruddin wrote: “The design and development of future smart city services will usher with unprecedented creativity, a plethora of functionalities and con-veniences to the urban communities. The success of smart city services depends on the assurance that security is maintained and protected to meet community expectations. However, due to the variety of components involved in the design of smart city services and their complex interactions, it becomes challenging to properly assess the overall se-curity of the system throughout the service life cycle. This paper presents a holistic approach to model the security of smart city service infrastructure at a higher level of abstraction. To match realistic security deployments, the proposed model is based on multiple tiers of defense that includes defense at component level, system level, and security opera-tion center. For a given system con-figuration and component vulnerability vector, the model assesses key security parameters for a variety of attacks. The proposed model is generic and can be used for studying the security of various smart city infrastructures, deployment con-figurations, and attack vectors.” Dr. Nazeeruddin is the CCES expert in the field of Cybersecurity and is currently leading CCES activities and research in the area of Cybersecurity. Dr. Nazeeruddin was interviewed lately by Times Higher Education where he expressed his vision and have discussed about PMU Cybersecurity research initiatives and their influence/impact on the local and global industries. The full interview is already published in this link.

The goal of the cen-ter is to offer a good opportunity for the students to keep improv-ing the skills they need to thrive in their classes. CCES lab In-structors were instructed to allocate and reserve three hours per week to support students in various topics. These include JAVA, web programming, Shell Scripting, Python, Matlab, Math related subjects, electronics, Robotics, Network administration etc. CCES announced the topics and the schedule to students through the Computing Collaro Club (CCC) – Active CCES club, postings on CCES bulletin boards, and by emails to all CCES students encouraging them to take advantage of this opportunity.

In the past the student support center has been very popular and beneficial to students who needed help in catching up with some of the topics and we are hoping for noticeable improvement in their academic performance

N ew Software Engineering Program: Strong Start!

In its first semester, the newly offered Software Engineering program was able to draw

about 50 male and female students. Such strong enrollment performance has motivated

CCES faculty to meet our students’ expectations, deliver high quality teaching students

and eventually have them ready to compete with their fellow students landing great jobs in a tough job

market thanks to the wide range of technical skills that they will acquire during their journey at PMU.

The Software Engineering program is viewed as relatively new engineering discipline concerned with

all aspects related to the life cycle of software development and production. It has grown so fast that it

has become firmly linked to all other computer related areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Parallel

Processing, Computer Graphics, Human-Computer Interaction, Database Management Systems, and

many others. Software Engineering embraces all technical skills engineers need to acquire in devel-

oping high-quality, efficient, usable, accessible, maintain-

able, secure professional software improving existing

software. These skills include concepts, models, theo-

ries, practices, techniques and tools.
