Board-style exam offered annually to all residents

and fellows

◦ Objective assessment tool designed to benefit:

Trainee: assess level of medical genetics and genomics

knowledge

Identify those at-risk for failing boards

NOT used for promotion, graduation, etc.

Program Director: use scores to assess training program’s

curriculum and teaching effectiveness

◦ ABMGG does not accredit residency

programs for Medical Genetics and Genomics

◦ Accredited through the Accreditation Council

for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

Page 18: Miriam G. Blitzer, ABMGG CEO

National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) ◦ Certifying bodies should not also accredit the institutions that

train those who are being certified

Potential conflict of interest

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ◦ There must be strict standards separating program accreditation

and individual certification (to avoid conflict of interest)

Page 19: Miriam G. Blitzer, ABMGG CEO

Maintain the status quo

Create a separate, new entity (a separate “Board”)

to accredit training programs for

genetics/genomics laboratory specialties

Have experienced external entity like ACGME

assume lab training program accreditation

Education (ACGME)

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical

Education

• 1981 – ACGME established (formerly LCGME) by the

AMA

• 2000 – ACGME became a separately incorporated

organization; private, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit

organization

Mission: to improve health care and population health

by assessing and advancing the quality of resident

physicians' education through accreditation.

• Sets and monitors the professional educational

standards essential in preparing physicians to deliver

safe, high-quality medical care to all Americans.

Education (ACGME)

What is ACGME Accreditation?

• Sets standards for effective training programs, and

monitors compliance with those standards

• Specialty-specific committees (Review Committees,

RCs) of volunteers create a uniform set of high

standards for each accredited specialty applied across

all accredited programs to ensure the highest quality

physicians and patient care.

• Programs are continuously monitored for substantial

compliance with the through data collection and

evaluation, surveys, and site visits.

Education (ACGME)

Who Sits on the Genetics RC?

• Medical Geneticists with experience with training

programs (current or past PD or significant engagement

with training program)

• 2 Nominated by ABMGG

• 2 Nominated by ACMG

• 2 Nominated by AMA

• Resident Member

• Public Member

• Ex-Officio Member – ABMGG CEO

2015 – Approached ACGME to consider accrediting lab-based medical genetics training programs

4/16 – Met with ACGME leadership

5/16 – Announced possibility of ACGME accreditation at APHMG and Lab PD SIG

5-8/16 – Submitted application for review to ACGME

Process moving forward to determine feasibility and final approval by ACGME Board of Directors

4/2017 – held webinar for PD and TDs (slides and QAs posted to website http://abmgg.org/pages/program_newsletter.shtml

ACGME Board of Directors discussing/voting early June

ABMGG will discuss at BOD meeting late June 2017

Page 24: Miriam G. Blitzer, ABMGG CEO

Trainees must have doctoral level degree (MD or PhD)

ACGME program requirements developed by review committee that includes lab experts

Review Committee will expand to include lab experts

Cost - ~$4000 per program

Timeline – not defined yet but will be thoughtful and not rushed

Page 25: Miriam G. Blitzer, ABMGG CEO

ACGME accreditation may be a positive imprimatur– fellows can state they trained in an ACGME-accredited program, well recognized by medical institutions and licensing organizations.

Relationship with Institutional GME Office:

◦Benefit?: Several programs already under GME office – going very smoothly and positive experience

◦Concern?: Lab programs out of GME’s “comfort zone” How will lab fellows be paid - through GME office? May need to educate GME offices. Potential cost issues
