How did you get your start in design? My Gran was a seamstress. As a kid, my siblings and I spent one week during summer vacation with her. She always put us to work with chores around the house. She used to say “Every man needs a skill,” so my chore was to help with the sewing. I have always been fascinated with how things work and the sewing patterns seemed sort of like a puzzle to me.

How did you figure out you had an eye for interior design? Like I said, I’ve always been interested in the form and function of things. After sewing clothes I transitioned into sewing tents and sleeping bags—I camped a lot as a kid—to studying how furniture is made and even architecture. Later, I studied industrial design and learned how to make a product work efficiently and productively. After college, I took a job with an interior design firm.

Our reader base is primarily women. What do you have to say to them about men working in design and trusting their opinion?I guess I’d tell them it takes both sides to make something truly work. A guy pad still needs a feminine touch so women will feel comfortable hanging out at his place. Same with a gal’s home. There has to be balance; if a couple lives together, both parties should design the space. Excellent advice. What is your favorite diy project?I still make tents! Although, for my two sons we call them teepees.

Yes, we heard. Are you are selling your fantastic teepees?Yes! Actually, my youngest son Shaun’s school principal’s wife owns an indie boutique in our town. She got wind

of my life size teepees and offered me a sort of consignment deal. Since then, I’ve also opened an online shop and business is booming. My sons and wife, the whole family, help with the designs, ordering materials, and the sewing.

What advice do you have for the young folk interested in the design profession?Oh man, I’d tell them absorb anything and everything design! If your passion is design, immerse yourself in it. Get into a good design program and network as much as you can.
