Quarry Park includes hiking trails, a play area and tree house, a drop-in picnic area with barbeques,a community garden, and open grassy areas. From the main parking lot, two trailheads head up through a dense eucalyptus forest, yielding to an old quarry, great views of the ocean, and a labrinth. Mirada Surf and Quarry County Park Mirada Surf West is one of the few undeveloped coastal bluffs in the region. The popular, multi-use California Coastal Trail meanders through the 19-acre coastal bluff offering expansive views of the ocean and access to the beach from the southern end. Mirada Surf East, across Highway 1, includes 41 acres of protected open space and a trail leading to Quarry Park, a 517-acre community park. Nestled in the town of Granada, this park includes play areas, picnic facilities, and hiking trails. Natural features and history Mirada Road ran along the El Granada Beach bluffs until the late 1960s, when the shoreline eroded and the road fell into the ocean. The bluff property was historically used for cattle grazing and farming of hay, red oats, and root crops, and was eventually split into west and east by the Ocean Shore Railroad and Highway 1. Designated as a community park in the 1978 Mid-Coast Community Plan, Mirada Surf became public parkland only after denial of several development proposals. Today, its easily accessible scenic blufftop includes coastal scrub wetlands and grasslands with habitat for numerous birds and other wildlife. Part of the massive 1906 Burnham Plan for the town of El Granada, Quarry Park was later used for grazing, then as a quarry that supplied rock for Highway 1 and the Half Moon Bay Airport. In 1995, San Mateo County purchased the land as a community park managed until 2013 by the nonprofit Midcoast Parklands. The park’s trails lead through non-native eucalyptus forests to the Mesozoic-age granite of the old quarry floor, the terrace wetland, and views of Pillar Point. The area is home to more than 50 bird species.
