Concert Program
Noble European Soul and the Eastern Fire
Eastern Europe is a great and picturesque land on the Earth, having collected unique history, authenticity and culture during thousands of years. From the Mediterranean shores to the Northern seas, this region has joined hundreds of peoples, which enrolled achievements into the world history for ever.
Music of this land is a marvelous monument and hymn to the beauty of these lands, emotions, rueful feelings and heroic deeds of people, who have lived or are still living in this part.
Triumph of a Russian Fairy-Tale
The gala concert is opened with an overture to the opera written by a Russian composer Mikhail Glinka “Ruslan and Lyudmila”. Idea of the piece lies in the triumph of light forces. The music is penetrated with the awaiting of a holiday, feast, feeling of the celebration’s eve. Fantastic, mysterious sounds appear in the middle part of the overture.
Unofficial Hymn of the Czech Republic
In 1874, Czech composer Bedrich Smetana has written one of the most gorgeous pieces of the XIX century, called “Vltava”. Thereby, he describes one of the biggest Czech rivers. Flute tunes at the beginning of the poem reflect the calm flow of Vltava, sounds of trumpets and French horns — hunting in the forest on its shores, quiet melody of violins on the background of the wooden horns — nocturnal roundelays of mermaids.
Bravety of Ukrainian Knights
A great Ukrainian composer Mykolay Lysenko praised courage and bravety of Ukrainian kozaks, which fought with invaders, in his overture to the “Taras Bul’ba” opera, written after the tale of Mykolay Gogol. Passion of battles, lyrics of Ukrainian song and the world-known hopak dance style, — all this in just one composition.
Masquerade Mystery and BeautyOne of the most beloved pieces in Soviet times — waltz from the “Masquerade” ballet written by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. Miraculous waltz harmonies tell about the former times of imperia Russia, when masquerade balls were popular. Without any doubt, this masterpiece won’t leave anyone indifferent.
Love and Hatred – Two Sides of the Unity
Immortal piece of the Soviet composer Sergey Prokofiev from the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” is surely considered to be one of his most epic and well-known works. Opposition between Montague and Capulet families backed by a tender melody of dancing girls.
New Year Miracles
One of the most famous ballets in the world — “The Nutcracker” by Piotr Tchaikovsky. Andante Maestoso part reflects symphonic direction of “The Nutcracker” in a special way.Its contents hide a serious idea about the future of the life journey of the young heroes. This is a typical for Tchaikovsky character of a “passionate struggle for life”, character of searching, hopes and suffering.
Time, forward!
Soviet power has significantly influenced music art. Though the masterpieces have always taken place on the Slavic land. Music of the Soviet composer Georgy Sviridov under the title “Time, forward!” is saturated with the spirit of industrialization, power and distinctness. Theme of this piece has become an into of the main USSR TV show — “Time”.
ЩедрикHoly Christmas Spirit
Small song “Shchedryk” by Ukrainian composer Mykolay Leontovich became a Christmas hymn in the whole Christian world. Motives of Ukrainian songs transfuse the joy and mystery of the most light holiday in the year.
Pomposity of Polish Balls
Polonaise origin is connected not with the folk, but aristocratic community. It is an old-time ceremonious procession of the Polish elite, having a very solemn, parade character. Frederic Chopin praised his homeland by the means of polonaise, recalling its former grandeur and dreaming about the future free Poland.
Songs and Dances of the Ancient Tribes on Slavic Lands
Unbelievable lyricism and beauty of the “Prince Igor” opera by the Russian composer Alexander Borodin became world known due to the part called “The Polovtsian Dances”.Incredible imagery and lyricism of the harmony unwrap an entire imaginative picture even without scenic action.
Hymn of Kyiv — Capital City of the Eastern Europe
Kyiv is the former capital of the great Kyiv Rus and the present capital of the modern Ukraine. “Great Gate of Kiev” by Modest Mussorgsky reflects the power and pomposity of this great city. Spiritual harmony, chimes and unbelievable energy logically ring down the curtain of The East European Miracle gala concert.
