Minster Vets 12 March 2008 Memories Revived of Decorating Hard-Boiled Eggs for Easter Vet Sara Perez enjoys basking in a touch of nostalgia and so with Easter just round the corner is reviving childhood memories by painting hard-boiled eggs while encouraging the children of friends to do the same. “The first sweet eggs were made 100 years ago from sugar or marzipan and since then chocolate eggs have become popular, they have almost replaced the decorated hard-boiled eggs. I think this is a real shame as it’s a really fun way to celebrate Easter,” says Sara, a poultry vet with Minster Veterinary Practice in York. “Last year Britons consumed around 80 million chocolate eggs which is the equivalent to the weekly egg production of 13 million hens,” says Sara, who wants to see more free range eggs enjoyed, particularly at Easter. “Nine million free range eggs are consumed daily in the UK and although this figure can appear high it’s only a small percentage of the chocolate eggs consumed at Easter.”

One of the advantages of eating natural eggs at Easter, according to Sara, is that they are low in calories with only around 80 kcals per medium egg. In contrast, a small standard 100 grams chocolate egg has around 400 to 500 kcals. “In addition, decorating your own eggs is a fun way to celebrate Easter,” she adds.
