EDITORIALRadio spot on Academy FM was a bit of a disaster

for me last month as I turned up at the studio withoutany magazines or my crib sheets. Howard made me siton the naughty step, with a reminder that I must dobetter this month. Luckily I had taken along Stuart andMark who got a good plug in for their fundraising eventsin aid of Children with Cancer. More on their exploits in the LondonMarathon next month.

We also had 2 of the cast of Calendar Girls come along to promote theirplay which is on at the Village Hall in May, so it wasn’t an entirely wastedjourney.

I’m expecting Alex, from the Twinning, and maybe Stuart and Mark tocome along with me this month. Alex to promote the Twinning Associationand Stuart and Mark to give us an update on both their run and how the

funds are mounting up.Thank you to everyone who sent in an entry for the Air Show Tickets, I was pleased to

find so many envelopes waiting for me when I got back from holiday. A winner has beendrawn and I can announce them to be Mr. R. Stone of Monkton Road. Well done to youand you should receive your tickets in the post direct from Heritage Events.

The answers for those who are still scratching their heads were as follows: 1/ ‘Arise toProtect’; 2/ Fire Services Central Training Establishment; 3/ G-VLCN; 4/ KLM - Fokker 70- Schipol, Amsterdam; 5/ Any of the events listed at www.heritage-events.co.uk/. Wewere quite particular on what we accepted as correct answers especially to question 2which had to read as the answer above. Some told us KLM were using Boeing 737’s buttheir official website says they are using Fokker 70’s and is was definitely a Fokker 70 thatmade the first official flight into Manston so this was the only answer we accepted. Thankyou to Heritage Events for helping us stage this competition and for so generously givingus the tickets, maybe we can do it all again the next time you hold an Air Show here!!

The new Minster Business Association looks like it‘s now coming to fruition so if yourun any type of business, however large or small, in Minster or any of the surroundingvillages, you’d do well to sign up to the association and enjoy the benefits of membership.Registration forms are available from Attwells Newsagents, Minster Matters, or via emailfrom [email protected] and the next open meeting is the ‘RegistrationMeeting’ on Thursday 9th May, 7.30pm at the Sports Pavilion, Recreation Ground, StMildred’s Road, Minster. Hope to see you there!

Well, that’s it, I’ve said just about all I had to say, except to just send my condolencesto those who havelost loved ones orfamily membersrecently, especiallyto those I knowpersonally who havesubmitted reports offamily memberswho have recentlypassed away, mythoughts are withyou all at this sadtime.

Just the usualquestion: Where’sZac??

SAD DEMISE OF A MUCH LOVED BUSINESSBy now it’s widely known in Minster

that the Gossip Shop has closed. Althoughthe eventual closure had been accepted -albeit sadly - nevertheless a ‘send off’ hadbeen arranged for Friday 5th April, alsoa dinner on Easter Monday (postponedfrom Saturday 23rd March due to snow).Imagine the surprise (shock?) whenbetween 12 noon and the afternoon ofThursday 28th March the ring was pulled

(with approx 4 hours warning) and that morning had in fact been it’s final opening!Whether people visited the Gossip Shop or not, Minster has been lessened by

its closure - a focal point not only for all who visited, but to those passing throughthe village. However, the friendships made will not disappear thanks to Teresa,Julie and Bonnie, who with hard work and cheerfulness made the Gossip Shop agreat meeting place.

Doors close - others open and good wishes are sent to Julie and Bonnie and the“Mad Hatter”.

An Ex. Gossip Shopper

BEWARE A SCAM!It has come to our notice that there is a possible scammer using Minster Matters

as an ‘in’ to get unsuspecting advertisers to part with some of their hard earned cash. One of our regular advertisers reported to us he had received a phone call purportingto come from an Anti-Bullying Group who said they were working with us to promoteanti-bullying and would he like to be part of the campaign by taking advertisingspace in a national journal to complement an article they were running with us hereat Minster Matters. Luckily he smelled a rat when he asked for the name of thejournal and the group’s phone number as it showed on his phone as ‘withheld’. Hesaid they refused to give him this information but then asked for a cheque for £150which he politely refused.

This is definitely a scam, we at Minster Matters would not enter into anythinglike this, so please be warned, if anyone like this approaches you and mentions ourname you can be sure it isn’t legit!!

MINSTER PLAYHOUSELast Call for Calendar Girls!

As you may know, your village drama group, Minster Playhouse, will be staging TimFirth’s hugely successful play, Calendar Girls in the Village Hall on Wednesday May 15th,through to Saturday May 18th.

The play tells the true story of a group of women from a Yorkshire village Women’sInstitute who do something a little different for their WI calendar and bare all, so as to raisemoney to buy a settee for the visitor’s room of their local hospital. The fund-raising is inorder to commemorate the husband of one of the ladies, who dies of Leukaemia.

The rapport between the women creates some hilarious comic scenes, and also, at times, some heart-rending moments of poignancy as her friends combine to support the bereavedwidow. Calendar Girls is one of the few plays in which you will have tears in your eyes ofboth sadness and of joy.

Minster Playhouse will be donating part of the proceeds from ticket and program salesto Lymphoma and Leukaemia Research, the original Calendar Girls supported charity.

Tickets are still available for each of the evening performances, but unfortunately, theSaturday Matinee show is sold out. Please call the Box Office on 01843 220208 to reserveyour seat – they are going fast.

Last Call for Calendar Girls, but the first announcement that Minster Playhouse will bepresenting Oscar Wilde’s classic farce, The Importance of Being Earnest, on WednesdaySeptember 25th through to Saturday 28th.

Further announcements coming soon to village notice boards, shop windows and MinsterMatters.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WITuesday 9th April at 7.30 saw the opening of Minster WI’s

monthly meeting with the usual rendition of Jerusalem. President,Marion Rose, welcomed everyone and, after various announcements,

reminded members to read the Minutes and Treasurer’s report of the Marchmeeting, displayed on the Board’s table.

Marion Bullard then introduced David Fagg from the Kent, Surrey & SussexAir Ambulance Trust. After his most informative account of the valuable workcarried out by the Trust, it was very clear that the inhabitants of Kent, and theother two counties, owe the Trust a great deal. Following member’s questionsJane Hammond, on behalf of the members, thanked him for a really interestingtalk.

After refreshments, Marion requested suggestions for activities in the secondhalf of the monthly meetings to prevent things becoming “samey”. Suggestionswere also requested for activities at Coffee & Chat mornings (held on 3rd Thursdayevery month) and for venue ideas and helpers for the Sunshine Club outings. Sheparticularly thanked Dorothy Butterworth for her hard work in organising thoseoutings in the past.

Marion reminded the meeting of the special production of Calendar Girls onSaturday 18th May at the Village Hall, when our WI is providing cream teasfor the matinee performance. MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATIONSpring has sprung at last!!As mentioned in last months MM, I have to say what a grand evening we all had at the quiz on 16 March, where an

overall profit of almost £300 was raised. Well done everyone who contributed to the success of this event.· Christine Lynch for being Quiz master and for her excellent catering skills· Royal British Legion for the use of their facilities · Vicki for her scrumptious cakes· Carol and Malcolm Bubb for promoting the raffle · Everyone who participated and· Those who kindly donated prizes

The quiz had a French flavour to it and the evening ended in a tie breaker. Carol and Malcolm’s team just took the edge with Alex andDale’s team missing out by a breath. However, it has spurred them on to return to the next quiz which we hope to organise for Octobertime, where they have designs for victory themselves!!

19 May, Anniversary Day in France: A full coach is all set for the off for a day of musical entertainment, fun and lunch, kindlyprovided by our hosts in Armbouts Cappel. You can still join us if you wish to travel separately, but we still need to know numbers forcatering needs. (Ring Carol: 07745 683 466)

9 June, Fun Day. Minster Rec, Midday, Free Entry: I’m sure this date is already in your diary. On the day there will be a bar andrefreshments, music, a car boot sale (Pitches £5 pre-booked or £7 on the day).Car boots are always popular, so pop into your attic, sortout your unwanted goods and turn them into ££££s. We have Joey the Clown doing animal balloons, the possibility of face painting, bouncy castle, a bowling game, a superb raffle, plant stall and more.

We have acquired some medieval type stocks and we’re looking for a willing person to be the victim! Sorry, the volunteer! Do youknow some fun loving individuals prepared to do 15 minute stints each?

How about booking a pitch yourself, maybe sell some handicrafts? The prices are the same as the boot sale pitches. We advise everyone to bring a brolly – not because we think it will rain, but because we have a competition for the best dressed brolly.

(and besides, it may come in handy!) Ideally the winner of each category (children and adults) will be judged for their most innovativehand made decorations. Judging will hopefully be done by our French friends.

We also are trying to arrange press coverage for the afternoon, so do your best. Please ring Bernie if you wish to provide any musical talent: 07814 214 993

Ring Alex for booking any pitches: 07903 882 640 Call Carol for stock volunteers: 07745 683 466Thank you for all interested parties.

Merci beaucoup.

Thank yous…

We would like to thank the person who found our cat, which had unfortunatelybeen run over and had not survived her injuries. She had been missing for a weekand we had been searching for her during that time. Every pet has a loving familyand our children have been very worried and upset. We felt so grateful thatsomeone had taken the time to leave her body at Eagle Vets, who then kindlylooked after her and contacted us.

Once again thank you to everyone involved.Ben, Sue, Thomas, Katie and Amelie Whelan

Thank you from Jean & JackieHope all is ok in Minster. We are both keeping ourselves busy and not missing

work, though we miss you all.We would like to say thank you to everyone for their good wishes and for

our cards and gifts. As well as a thank you to everyone who made our eveningat the New Inn so enjoyable.

Thank you, Jean and Jackie

Audrey’s and Shirley’s Charity DanceOn behalf of the Patient Liaison Group I would like to express our sincere

It was extremely appreciated and will definitely help us achieve our targetwell within our anticipated timescale.

We are overwhelmed by the support we get within the village and continuallygain strength and encouragement from this.

Thank you all very much.,Ken Self, Chairman/Treasurer

SPECIAL THANKS TO REV. CANON BOB COLESIt is with sadness but immense gratitude that I write this piece.Bob has been our Priest in Charge for the past seventeen years and has

become a huge part of our village community. We will miss him as he nowleaves us to enjoy his well deserved retirement.

During his time in Minster and with the Wantsum Group of Churches, wehave seen our regular Sunday congregations swell and young families growand mature, with children starting at Sunday School, going on to Confirmation, and some being married by Bob.  He has certainly had a spiritual influence onhundreds of children; becoming a regular visitor to the village school andofficiating at many assemblies and school church services over the years andthe children all know him as “Bob”.

Bob has been instrumental in bringing together the community forRemembrance Sunday too, working closely with the British Legion in Minsterand the Salvation Army and other churches.  We saw the church full to burstinglast November and this is something that we hope will continue.

Bob has also been a key figure in the organisation of the annual OpenGardens event, something that we now enjoy as a village. This year OpenGardens is on 15th/16th June and we hope that it will be well supported as inprevious years.

Over the past seventeen years many improvements have been made to thefabric of St Mary’s Church including the installation of an effective heatingsystem making services such as Remembrance are a much more enjoyableexperience. The ongoing work on the church building has also assured that thebuilding will continue to serve the local community in future. None of thiswould have been possible without the tireless dedication of Bob and formerChurchwarden Paul Willins.

The 5th May is Rogation Sunday. The custom of “beating the bounds” wassomething that Bob re-introduced and is a wonderful day walking through thefour parishes of the Wantsum Group stopping for food and prayer along theway.  If you would like to join us or want to know more please see details atthe back of church or in Minster Matters.

As a Community we certainly have a lot to acknowledge and thank Bobfor. As Church family we will try to continue all the good work that he hasdone.  All services at Minster will continue as usual with clergy and Lay Readersfrom the Wantsum Group and some visiting priests taking the services.  ForWeddings, Baptisms and Funerals please direct all enquiries to 01843 821250.

Finally, we all wish Bob well for a very long, happy and healthyRetirement. May God be with him always.

New Beginnings for The Bell Inn - Your Support NeededTo the editor, Minster MattersWhen we arrived in Minster in 2005, the Bell was a well-run and

popular pub, and a credit to its landlords, Alex and Ian Young.Since their retirement its fortunes have declined and most of

its clientèle have moved to other pubs, especially to the newly refurbishedand excellent New Inn.

However, this village used to support three pubs easily, and theeconomic climate and the smoking ban notwithstanding, I believe that itstill can.

However, if the Bell does not get some support from the village itmay well close for good, and I doubt that there is anyone in Minster whowould like to see that site vacant permanently.

The Bell has re-opened under the care of temporary landlords, Daveand Alli, who are much more in the spirit of the Youngs andtheir predecessors, and are trying to take the Bell back to its heyday.

In the interest of the Village it would be sensible to give these goodpeople some active support in their efforts and give the Bell, and its food,a try.

Are you wild about your garden…?If so, Kent Wildlife Trust would like to hear about it through its annual wildlife-friendly gardening awardsscheme - run in partnership with some local authorities.

The scheme is free to enter and open to any type of garden in Kent, regardless of size - from a balconyto a baronial estate; courtyard to community allotment. Even a group of adjoining gardens could enter as awildlife-friendly neighbourhood.

Kent Wildlife Trust’s volunteer advisors aim to visit as many entrants as possible during the season. Theymay recommend the gardens for bronze, silver or gold certificates; but more importantly they give tips andadvice as to how the gardens can be made even more wildlife- friendly.

Gold winners also receive a coveted ‘blue plaque’ and may be put forward for a “special award” such as:

● Best School Wildlife Garden; Best Community Wildlife Project; or Best Water-wiseWildlife Garden - all sponsored by Southern Water● Best Dragon Garden  sponsored by Kent Reptile & Amphibian Group● Best Garden for Bats  sponsored by Kent Bat Group● Best Wildlife Churchyard  sponsored by Kent Gods Acre Partnership

…and new for 2013:● The Garden with the Best Buzz!  sponsored by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust

Certificates and plaques will be presented at special events run in conjunction with partners during Octoberand November.

Entry forms are available either online at www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk or by telephoning 01622 662012.The closing date for entries is 30th June.

We are also keen to hear from gardeners/enthusiasts who would be interested in training to becomevolunteer wildlife gardening advisors. For more information please [email protected] or telephone 01622 662012.

LONDON MARATHON 2013, FUND RAISINGFOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER.

Mark Padfield and Stuart Lamb have been training hard allyear to run the London Marathon to raise funds for Childrenwith Cancer on Sunday 21st April 2013. By the time this goesto print they should have both completed the run. We will catchup with them in next month's addition to see how they got on,on the day and see how much they’ve managed to raise for sucha worthy cause.

On Saturday the 30th April the lads with help from Julie,Gary and Christine from the Royal British Legion held a quiznight. The evening was a huge success and there were 25 teams

who took part in thefun. The highlight ofthe evening was theCharity Auction of asigned Stoke Cityfootball shirt whichwas won by MrColin L Sackett, whowon the auction at£210 and then kindlyupped the donationto £250 after thehammer, had fallen.

On the night we managed to raise a staggering £1600, so wewould like to thank all of the kind generous villagers, friendsand family for coming together and raising such an impressiveamount. With special thanks to all the local businesses andpeople who also donated such great raffle and auction prizes.

On Saturday 6th April Mark and I organized a Charity GolfDay that was held at St Augustine's Golf Club. Every one ofthe 84 golfers taking part had a fantastic day, the sun was outand we managed to raise £3385. We would like to thank KevinSmith and Steve Cliffe from Cliffe’s Butchers in Minster forall their support and help on the day. Without their support theday would not have been a success.

Our running total for Children with Cancer stands at £4985so we are already over our target of £4000 which we are sohappy with. If anyone would still like to sponsor us then youcan use the link below to do so online.

uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/PadfieldandlambThanks so much for everyone's support; it has been

overwhelming!Mark and Stuart

LOCALISM IN ACTIONSo the Government

and the Planners keeppushing the idea of“Localism” and we all sitback to wait for someoneelse to make it happen. Inthe village of Minsterthere is no suchcomplacency.

The members of itsCommunity Led PlanSteering Group have beenfired with enthusiasm toget their Parish Plan upand running and duringlast week a group ofvolunteers visited allhouses in Minster - 1600of them, to remind

everyone to get their completed Questionnaires returned sothat the data collected can be analysed, made sense of andform the basis of an explanation of “how the village worksnow and sees itself developing during the next ten years.”

The cheerful collectors in their hi-viz jackets thoroughlyillustrated the good cross section of the community withyouth, Parish Councillors, grandparents etc. all collecting…..

More than that and in order to save the considerable costof having the data analysed by outside professionals, severalmembers of the group have offered their expertise in datacrunching and will be doing the job themselves.

Amazingly, they will also be preparing much of thepresentation material for the Plan themselves. The finisheddocument will surely be truly representative of very localinput and Kent County Councillor Charles Hibberd has saidit may become the future blueprint for other Kent ParishPlans.

THANET EARTH SCHOOLS RECIPECOMPETITION 2013.

Billy, Phoebe and Niamh at Thanet College.I am always delighted at the response we have from our

children at Minster School, when we send out the ThanetEarth Recipe Competition letters. We have been fortunateenough to have had children in the final ‘Cook-off’ for threeyears now. I would like to say a huge well done to everyonewho entered the competition this year. We had lots of fantasticrecipes, they all sounded delicious. The judges were veryimpressed with the standard of entries this year.

Billy Vinson, Phoebe Bullard and Niamh O’Shea wereall lucky enough to reach the final at Thanet College, and Iwas lucky enough to be there with them.

Billy cooked his ‘Billy’s BBQ Surprise’, which werechicken kebabs and salad. Billy said ‘It was really exciting;it was great fun cooking in a restaurant kitchen. The bestpart for me was when I put my kebabs under the grill and Iwatched the top of the grill come down and there were flamesgoing onto the kebabs!’

Niamh impressed the judges with her Tomato and PepperTart with cucumber spaghetti salad; she was so confident inthe kitchen and produced a fantastic dish. Niamh told methat ‘it was fun; it was exciting to take part in the competitionagain. I was nervous but also looking forward to it at thesame time, because I knew what it is like in the kitchen. Thebest part was serving my dish to the judges.’

Phoebe won her age category, with her delicious ‘HealthyHeart Warmer’ soup; a yummy vegetable soup with cheesycroutons, Phoebe was really surprised when the judges saidshe had won and said that she would love to enter thecompetition again. Phoebe’s soup has been produced as arecipe card and will be in our local Tesco store soon, so keepa look out for it!

I was so impressed by the way all the children all cookedtheir dishes confidently, chatting to the judges when theycame to see them preparing the food, and enjoying theexperience.

Well done to you all and congratulations to Phoebe.Ali Gillatt, Family Liaison Officer,Minster Primary School

Year 6 Victorian DayOn Monday 15th April Year 6 Minster Primary School had aVictorian day. Mr Marston and Miss Wilkinson pretended thatthey were old Victorian teachers. Most Year 6 children dressedup as Victorian girls and boys. We each had to bring in a pennyto be able to enter the school. If you didn’t bring in a penny youhad to wear the dunces hat. Most people did bring in a penny butthere were only a few people who didn’t bring in a penny. Both class teachers where really bossy - but they were onlypretending - some people even got scared of them butsometimes they couldn’t hold in their laughter. The girls had tosit on a different side to the boys - in Victorian days theynormally sat in different classes. In the middle of the day the girlshad to go in a class and put a book on their head, to make them

walk straight to act like a proper lady. Also the boyswent outside to march and walk like a proper man, they also had to do some press ups. We did all thisbecause we are learning about Queen Victoria

EnvironmentOur environment is under threat the smoke that comes out ofcar’s and factories can be dangerous for the environmentbecause of the gases they make. We are cutting down trees thatare very helpful to us because they produce a gas that we need.If we didn’t have rain forests we wouldn’t have many amazinganimals like the eye eye it would be extinct so protect theenvironment not just be careless protect by putting your litter inthe bin not the floor! If you see litter pick it up and save theenvironment right now!

My Bizarre PetsI love my pets. I have a pet dog called Badger, Bob our stray cat,Pickles our rabbit, Freda our tortoise and Hammy my hamster.Badger our dog is the oldest pet in the house he is 14 and goingblind he also has arthritis, but despite his age he’s still like apuppy. Badger loves going on holiday to Devon to go and seethe donkeys in the donkey sanctuary. Bob is an adorable cat who is always friendly to others, he firstturned up when I was in year 3 when me and my Mum werecoming home from school, he’d been walking around our closefor ages no one knew who he belonged to, our next doorneighbour took him to the vet, no chip so he stayed with us.Pickles our rabbit came to us in February 2012 when my Mum’sfirst rabbit died. He’s really well behaved and loves cominginside, he loves our dog.Freda’s my Mums tortoise she chases people trying to get theirfeet she’s really old but still really cute.Last but not least Hammy the hamster, he’s mine and I got himfrom Pets at Home for my birthday ,he was plain white when Igot him but now he’s going ginger. When I first got him hechewed the box he came in and got out. He loves carrots andgrapes he’s very spoilt. All my pets have a really good life and are all special to me.

Arianne’s SleepoverA few weeks ago, my friend Arianne had a sleepover with meand Katrina. We went to Arianne’s house after school and saidwhat we would do, then her parents took us to McDonalds andwe were in there on our own! We did mess about a bit! After, back at Arianne’s house, we got ready for bed. Katrina had agigantic teddy, called Fluffy! Then we put face masks on andpainted our nails whilst watching a movie!
