EDITORIALI’m sat here at a loss for something to write about,

so I’ll just have to make it up as I go along. To begin with there are some important articles this

month that if you’re running any sort of business in thevillage you really ought to read.

Firstly the Parish Council are looking for Contractorsto come forward to be included on their ‘Approved’ list-see page 13 for further details, then there is theproposed Business Association that should interest ALLof you who trade in the village, see page 15 for detailsof the forthcoming meeting.

Also this month there is an important notice on thefront page with reference to a survey, for which you willshortly receive a form to be completed and returned toThanet District Council. It is important that you do so, so please don’t just addit to your paper recycling, make the effort and do your bit to help this villageinto the future.

Later this year each household will be receiving a questionnaire from thegroup who are organising the Community Led Plan and you can read more on

this on page 11.The Parish Council are actively looking to fill a vacancy and details on Co-option to the

Council can be read on page 15.Finally in my run down of important articles this month I must also mention the short

article from the Community Warden on page 9 reference dog fouling and the actions heintends to take to catch those who are at fault. If that’s you then be warned !!

Congratulations to Anne Munday on her recent very special birthday, and alsocongratulations to Field Pharmacy (our village chemist) on their ‘Healthy Living PharmacyAccreditation Award’, see details and a picture elsewhere in this issue.

Have I told you I make a regular trip to the studios of Academy FM (Thanet) once amonth to give listeners a bit of information on what’s happening in the village. Catch me onSunday Night Live with Howard Evans from 7 to 10pm. Next session Feb 17th. We have agood laugh and a bit of banter and it gets the Village out into the wider community.

Went this week, with our crew, who usually sit together for soup at the Old Schools, toview the Art Exhibition at the Belgian Cafe in Ramsgate (Art from the other side of therunway) which we advertised last issue. What talent the Northrop family have, reallyimpressive, should be in the Turner Centre at the very least! Stopped at the cafe for ourlunch as well and were all well pleased with what we had to eat, we’re even talking aboutgoing back again.

Before I run completely out of space I must apologise if something you’ve sent in hasn’tmade it into this issue, but we had to make the decision to leave out some of less importantbits we received forpublication as a lackof space preventedus from includingthem all.Well, that’s it, asalways space hasbeaten me yet againand so it onlyremains for me toask the usualquestion:Where’s Zac??

PILGRIMS HOSPICECollege lunch raises nearly £600

More than 70 people enjoyed a gastronomic delight at the EastKent College restaurant in Broadstairs to raise nearly £600 forPilgrims Hospices. The lunch was the latest arranged by MichaelShipley a volunteer with the hospice, who has raised much neededfunds for Pilgrims for several years.

There was also an array of raffle prizes to be won on the day, presented by volunteers Lil Smith and Doreen Daw, which furtherboosted the total.

Michael Shipley went on to say; “We thank everyone for theirsupport, many of whom have enjoyed our lunches over the years, but it was lovely to welcome some new faces. We would also liketo thank the students and tutors and everyone involved with theorganisation and presentation of such a wonderful meal.”

It costs more than £9.5 million to provide free care to all in EastKent who need it from the hospices in Thanet, Canterbury andAshford, as well as caring for patients in their own homes.

2012 is a special year for Pilgrims Hospices as we celebratecaring for the people of east Kent for 30 years having opened thefirst hospice in 1982 Canterbury.

Today we provide palliative care for adults with a range ofillnesses that cannot be cured including cancer, heart failure, respiratory conditions and neurological diseases. Care is providedfrom the three sites in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet, in patients'homes and via community programmes.  Care is also extended tofamilies and carers.

To keep delivering care to those that need it the most, Pilgrimshas to raise in excess of £9 million each year. The majority of thiscomes from our local community, so fundraising is very important.80p in every pound goes directly on patient care and over 75% ofour funding comes from the local community.

Also in 2012, Pilgrims Hospice Thanet is celebrating its 20thanniversary having been opened in 1992. It has an inpatient unit, runs a series of day programmes and offers outpatient appointmentsas well as visiting services in patients own homes. It also hosts theonly palliative care accommodation in east Kent that is suitable forpatients with dementia.

Situated on the main Ramsgate to Margate road, the hospicestands within the grounds of the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen MotherHospital and is surrounded by nearly two acres of stunning naturalgardens.

Check out Pilgrims Hospice latest events on page 26.

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY ANNEOn the 9th December 1912 a baby girl was born in a little village in South Wales

called Gilwern near Abergavenny. She was one of a family of eight girls and one boy. When she was only 2 years old her father was called up for the First World War

and times were hard for her mother bringing up the family while he was away.Anne had a grammar school education and then went into service in London.

While in London she would visit Margate often with a friend and has happy memoriesof those times. On one such visit she met her husband to be George William Mundayand they married in 1938 just before the second World War started. During the warAnne worked in an ammunitions factory in Glascoed making naval shells.

After the war Anne and George settled in Margate and they had two children Alanand Pat. Anne worked at Margate Hospital as a cook for 20 years but then was madeto retire, but she didn’t like retirement so found employment again as a cook in aresidential retirement home in Edgar Road Clifonville. She worked here for 10 yearsand was well into her 70’s when she finally retired.

When her husband sadly died Anne moved to Minster, that was about 11 yearsago. Anne used to enjoy crochet and knitting and has given many blankets etc to friendsand needy causes, but due to failing eyesight she is nolonger able to do this. Anne has some caring friendsand neighbours and her daughter Pat who lives inMinster regularly visits and cares for her mother. Herson Alan who lives in St. Peters is also there to helpwhen needed. She has one surviving sister who livesin Belgium.

On Sunday the 9th December 2012 Anne’s friendsand family, son Alan, daughter Pat, grandchildren andgreat grandchildren were all at a party to celebrateAnne’s birthday with her. I am sure you will join withus here at Minster Matters in congratulating Anne onthis milestone and wishing this lovely lady a belatedHappy Birthday.

OLD MINSTER PHOTO EXHIBITIONFollowing the success of last year’s exhibition we are holding another, on

Saturday 4th May in the Village Hall.Again there will be about 100 photographs, this time mostly from the 1970’s.

They will show events from the village from when we were 40 years younger; itmakes for interesting viewing. As we don’t use the stage we have given that areaover to the village of Acol to put on a display about their village, which is beingorganised by Neil Lawrence.

Admission will be free and refreshments will be available. Look out formore information in the May issue of this magazine.

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOXES UPDATEThe generous people of Minster came up trumps once again. They produced

130 festive shoe boxes filled with toys for deprived children in Eastern Europe andAfrica. These were delivered to the headquarters of Smile International in Orpingtonat the end of November to be dispatched on the lorries in time for Christmas.

In many cases the shoe boxes would have been the only gifts received by thechild this year and their gratitude can only be guessed at.

Donations and goods were also given by Minster Post Office, AttwellsNewsagents and Birchington Active Retired Association.

Many thanks to you all,Kate HumphreysP.S. Late donations were included in a shipment that left in January.

Resident’s view . . .This evening was marvellous- the school

choir singing carols, in unpleasant weatherand conditions but they sang so beautifully.

The Gossip Shop giving us all its usualfriendliness and good hot coffee and tea, alsogoodies to eat.

The Salvation Army playing their brassinstruments so skilfully and charmingly asalways.

Father Christmas was late arriving, dueto the snow and rain en route. He arrived inthe end to a long line of children eagerlyawaiting him.

The Morris Dancers performed brilliantly.I think this village of ours is fantastic. The

friendliness of all the folk in the street andshops is unbelievable. I say again we are sofortunate to have what I have described forus all to enjoy. All our other restaurants open- Kebab, Chinese, Indian, Bistro, all the pubs- well, what more can I say?

Yvonne Chapman, Rivers Court

LATE NIGHT SHOPPINGAnother successful evening and that's all down to the dedication of the brave

who were willing to weather the storm if it arrived!!Well the weather held off for a couple of hours to allow the evening to go

ahead and Minster School Choir to charm us all with their angelic voices. It wasobvious that their teacher had had them all practising as their singing was perfect.

The last of the Christmas lights were switched on by a countdown fromMiss Minster and her Princesses. The Salvation Army band as always providedthat Christmas feeling throughout the evening, while Santa and his helpers tooknote of all the children's requests in Jack and Margaret Wraith's fantastic grotto.

Shop keepers and staff welcomed everyone who had made the effort to joinin this festive event. John and Vivien Walford provided the warming mulledwine for our wonderful dancers the Offcumduns who turn up for free just to joinin and provide entertainment for everyone.

It was nice to hear some visitors saying how lovely our village was and theywould be back next year. A huge Thank You to everyone who makes this eventpossible especially Santa who finds time to come and see us at this busy timeof year. I'm sure his brilliant grotto and the fantastic children have a lot to withit.

Karen BrazilP.S We have a lot of Santa photographs not yet picked up from Attwells

Newasgents. If your child had their picture taken with Santa come and get it,there is nothing to pay and the photos this year are lovely.

LIZ TONG wishes to say a big thank you . . . for everybody’s kindness duringher recent stay in hospital.

Thanks to the Footpath Group . . . I just wanted to pass on a massive note ofappreciation to the person/team who are looking after our Minster footpaths. I havelived in the village for twelve years and our opportunities for wonderful walking to theNorth, South, East and West of the village are, I think, unsurpassed. We are just solucky to have these wonderful pathways and the dog and I meander quite a few milesalong them on most days. However this year despite all the cutbacks our public pathsjust seem to be manicured and they are an utter joy to walk, so thanks so much to theheroes who have worked so hard on this, there are many of us who just treasure them.Maura Pell

Christmas Thanks:I would like to give a big “thank you”

to everyone who helped make ourcelebrations of Christmas such wonderfuloccasions.

First of all to those who supported theGift Service. This year, we again collectedScholars packs containing basic schoolmaterials for children in Africa. It wasanother excellent response and I will givefurther details next month.

Thanks to Captains Lyn and BrynHargreaves for organizing the LychgateService this year, the Margate SalvationArmy Band for playing, the School Choirfor singing to us, and the WI for providingthe mince pies!

Thanks too to all who came to ourChristingle Service, Christmas EveSpecial, Midnight Mass or ChristmasMorning Communion. Finally, thanks toall those who decorated the church and toChris Randall, our organist, and the choirfor leading the worship.

It all added up to another reallywonderful Christmas Celebration.

More Thanks:A little belatedly, because of our double

issue magazine last time, may I record mygrateful thanks to two young people fromthe village. I refer to Jack & LucyChallenger!

Their public spiritedness in stoppingto examine some glistening objects andthen reporting their find to the police meantthat I was alerted to the break-in at theParish Church late on Friday 16thNovember. This led to a quick policeresponse and also spared the lady openingthe church in the morning the shock offinding the mess in church. It also meantthat we could quickly get a working partytogether to clear up the church ready forworship on the Sunday.

Thanks also to those who helped clearup the mess and especially Chris Hogbenof Capricorn Property Maintenance formaking the broken window secure andweather proof.

THANKS FROM REV’D BOB COLES DOG FOULINGDear Residents,It has come to my attention

that dog fouling on footpathsand in public places has becomea real issue in Minster yet again, especially along Gas Alley andMonkton Road, last recently oneresident reported 19 separatedog fouls on the footpath inMonkton Road alone.

I appreciate that this is thefault of the minority of dogowners, as the majority areresponsible owners  who clearup after their pets.

I shall be monitoring thesituation in my capacity as KCCCommunity Warden for Minsterand I intend to take anynecessary action that may berequired to keep Minster theclean and respectable village weall know and love.

CHRISTMAS TREES AND LIGHTSWell since the last edition of Minster Matters the Village

Christmas Trees have gone up and come down. This year the weather wasn't kind to the volunteers when the

trees had to go up. Under two gazebo's in Attwell's yard a groupof dedicated "twiddlers" tirelessly strung lights on 50 trees. Thisisn't as easy as it sounds as they have to be secured by "twiddling"wire so they survive the wind and rain. The tree gangs that hadto brave the elements got the job done and got soaking wet doingso.

Luckily the taking down day was a lot better weather. To allthe people who turned out on either or both days a huge thankyou. I hope you all feel proud when you see the lights twinklingduring December, they are appreciated by the villagers and visitors.I have not named our band of helpers in fear of missing someoneout but I will mention Roger Thomson who checked all the lightsand replaced nearly 500 bulbs!! Also repairing on tree days andduring December. Thank you Roger.  This includes the tree thatgot pulled down off The Bell Inn and lights wrecked by someonehaving "fun". It is nice to know though that this was an isolatedincident and we usually have no trouble in vandalism of the treeswhich are quite vulnerable, so maybe there is some pride in theyoungsters too.

Anyone wishing to help us with the trees this year please leaveyour name and contact details with Karen at Attwells Newsagents.

We are looking to replace all the standard type lights this yearwith LED lights, when we can find some to suit all our needs. Wewill be fundraising to purchase them so get those pennies readyfolks coz I'm gonna come asking for them. :-)

THANK YOU TO THOSE PEOPLE THAT SPOILOUR COUNTRY SIDE

This picture was taken recently near Plucks Gutter.

If they close the tip at Richborough, fly-tipping will happenall over Thanet, and the restrictions on larger vehicles tipping atMargate does not help either.

These people will tip their loads anywhere, so whatever moneyis saved in closing the tip will be used up clearing up fly-tipping.

Between the turning to Gore St. and as far as Stourmouth, there were at least five large amounts of waste tipped last month.

THE MINSTER COMMUNITY LED PLAN STEERING GROUPput their heads together on Wednesday evening 16th January to get to grips

with writing a Questionnaire which will be going out to all households in Minstervery shortly.

The Questionnaire will be used to collect important information and the viewsof all residents in the Parish of Minster and the responses will describe thecommunity’s vision for itself across all aspects of social, environmental and economiclife.

The Chairman, John Shervington stressed the importance that if a realistic viewis to be created by this means, a high percentage of questionnaires will need to becompleted and returned. When you receive it please be sure to answer its questionsas carefully as you can and make sure they are returned in good time.

Also look out for posters which will soon be displayed all around the Villagewhich will also be explaining the project and encouraging you to make your return.

It is also expected that another questionnaire will be put together by our localschool children who will be asked to focus on their ideas for their own little futureshere. Members of the Steering Group will soon be visiting the school to explainthe project, to encourage the children to take part in it and be involved in their localcommunity.

The Steering Group will also be looking for local people who have particularskills which aren’t available within the steering group to volunteer to help completethe task of producing the Parish Plan. If you think you have any particular abilitiesin this direction please let the Co-ordinator have your contact details.

Whilst on the subject of questionnaires, I would also like to mention that youwill soon be receiving a Housing Needs survey. The Parish Council, Thanet DistrictCouncil and Action with Communities in Rural Kent are responsible for the survey. The information gleaned from it will be really useful in identifying the future housingneeds of the Village and form part of the aims of the Parish Plan.

Iconography is the art of the Christian church fromits earliest times. As the doctrines of the Churchdeveloped, so gradually a means was created to expressthose doctrines in visual form. As the church moved froma persecuted underground movement to ultimately astate religion, so the images changed from an encodedand symbolic art inscribed in hidden places to a full andglorious exploration of salvation history made in rich andrare materials and techniques.

Icons take many forms. They are sometimes portable, usually painted on wooden panels but sometimesembroidered for use on altar cloths or priestly vestmentsand sometimes made in ceramic. There are permanentfrescoes and mosaics found on the walls of churches andcathedrals. There are icons made in ivory, gold, silver, bronze to be found on the vessels and furnishings ofplaces of Christian worship. These images were and stillare venerated and used as a focus for prayer, an interfacebetween earth and heaven, God and man.

Panel icons used natural materials and primitive tools, preparing boards, gold leaf and pigments with greatdifficulty and expenditure of time and effort. Some

artificial pigments were known in ancient times, such asvermilion, lead white and (later) synthetic ultramarine.Such pigments were very expensive. Lapis Lazuli wasmore expensive than gold!

Traditionally, iconography was passed fromgeneration to generation and often, though not always, studied in a monastic setting. Lay iconographerssometimes formed groups and worked together. By thismeans standards of skill and artistic achievement reachedgreat heights.

However, the monasteries were the repositories andguardians of learning and skill, and as such iconographywould have been practiced at Minster Abbey. From itsearliest times in the seventh century we know thatMinster Abbey had a scriptorium which would havecopied and illustrated texts of the Holy Scriptures and theChurch Fathers; curing their own skins and grinding theirown inks for the purpose.

Iconography is still a living tradition, preserved andpassed on by the Eastern Orthodox churches and reveredby the Western Christian churches.

It takes two directions, traditional and modern. Theformer deviates little in style, content and method, usingByzantine types as model andguide. The latter as you mightguess is more open to innovation.

What is sure is thaticonography must always teachand be a witness to Christiantruth.

I came to live in Minster a yearago. At that time the renovationof our new home left me withoutanywhere to practice. I was verydelighted and privileged when thesisters offered me the use of anout building as a studio, becauseit meant that I could continue tofulfil commissions and teach in asmall way.

Now that life is more settledit seems right and fitting to set upa workshop here in Minster, opento all, but of particular interest tothose wanting to deepen theirunderstanding of the faith whichformed our culture.

If you are interested, see theposter alongside which givesdates, fees and contact details.

MINSTER IN THANET WIThe December meeting was the Christmas Party when members were

treated to plenty of lovely homemade food, really puzzling quizzes andbrilliant musical entertainment from Ben Hoenes and his band. Thank you

to those who helped make our Party such a success. On Tuesday 8th January at 7.30pm the President, Marion Rose, welcomed members

and 3 visitors to the first meeting of 2013 in Minster Village Hall. Among other thingsMarion gave details of the Denman College draw being held that evening and theBirthday Dinner at Quex Barn on 26th February. Also an invitation to Monkton WI’sbirthday party on 21st February has been received. The Annual Council Meeting willbe held at the Winter Gardens in Margate on 13th March, speakers include PippaGreenwood and Jen Green and tickets are £10 each.

There was a reminder that the WI subs are now due. Appreciation was passedon from all, and particularly from Bob Cole to those who made mince pies and/orserved refreshments at the Church Lychgate Carol Service on 18th December.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved. Magistrate Bob Chapman andProbation Officer Annette Varker were then introduced as speakers for the evening.Everyone found their talk really enlightening, learning a great deal about their dutiesand responsibilities.

The February meeting is on 12th February with Michael Bispham’s talkentitled “Bees Naturally”.

Refreshments followed and then the Denman draw result gave the winning memberthe chance to attend a residential course at the College. The raffle and Marion’sreading of an amusing item brought the meeting to a close at 9.45pm.

A SAD FAREWELLMM have recently learnt that both of our friendliest and most helpful librarians

are retiring in the same week in March this year.Jean Meek and Jackie Wetherilt are both finishing during the week leading up

to Easter, Jackie doing her last shift on the Tuesday and Jean completing her employmenton the Saturday before Easter Sunday.

I feel sure there are many in the village who will miss them and I’m sure you willall join in with us in wishing them both a very happy retirement, Jackie tells us sheand her husband are hopefully off sailing.

They were always a great team back in the days when they worked together onthe same shifts, and those of us who have worked alongside them in the neighbourhoodcentre will be very sad to see them both go, however recent cut backs in the libraryservice meant this winning team was split up as the service changed from two librariansper shift, down to single manning, probably not one of the best staffing changes thatKCC have made.

Jean tells us they will be having a farewell drink in the Bell Inn on Wednesday27th March from 7.30pm, a chance for us to say thank you and goodbye to two KCCemployees who were more than just librarians, they were real friends to many of us.So if you’d like to pop in that evening you will be more than welcome. Jean says Imust remember to tell people, “you’ll all be responsible for your own bar bills“ !!

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR and RAFFLEThank you to everyone who supported us in our fund raising project and helped make

the various events we held during 2012 such tremendous successes. The prize draw was held at the Bazaar and the winner of the £100 cash prize was Mrs

Britton of Minster, with the second prize going to a lady in Birchington and the third prizeto someone in Westgate.

A full list of the 14 lucky winning numbers and prize winners are on display in thesurgery, and we are pleased to say all prize winners have been notified and all prizes claimed.

CRYOTHERAPY PROJECT and PRESENTATIONA presentation was held at the surgery on Friday 14th December and the monies raised

to fund this project were presented to the Senior Practice Partners; Dr C Crosfield and DrM Elliott. Present were members of the group, prize winners and others that had madedonations to the project.

The photographs show the presentation of the ‘1st Prize” of £100 to Mrs Britton (top right) and the presentation to the SeniorPractice Partners with the assembled group (bottom left).

We are extremely pleased to say that a contract has been placed and the new equipment has been ordered, with a delivery andinstallation date week commencing 28th January. Following commissioning and safety checks, the new treatment is expected to beavailable for Patients in early February.

The Senior Partners expressed their sincere thanks to all those who had contributed and made the project so successful, andwelcomed the opportunity to provide yet another valuable service at the surgery.

NEW “SELF CHECK-IN” SYSTEMThe new computer system was commissioned successfully in December which enabled the new “Self Check- in” to be introduced.

With a very simple system based around one’s date of birth, it has widely been accepted by patients as a quick and easy way ofbooking in for an appointment, thus preventing the need to queue during busy periods.

When checking-in to see a Doctor, the system will also advise patients of any undue delays in their appointment time, includingthe number of patients ahead of them and the average waiting time! But please remember ONLY 10 MINUTES is allocated for a

normal appointment, so be especially aware of this when makingan appointment, thus avoiding further delays and inconvenience.

Needless to say, there will always be a receptionist on hand ifanyone requires further help, especially in the case of lengthydelays.

SURGERY TRAINING DAYSPlease note that the surgery will close at 12.00noon on the

following days for the purpose of staff training:Tuesday 19th February and Tuesday 19th March.Should you need to see a Doctor during these times then please

call “Doctors on Call” via the normal surgery number - 821333.Or you can also call “NHS Direct” on 0845 46 47 for confidentialhealth advice and information for you and your family, thank you.

PATIENT GROUP MEETINGIf you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in February or require further information on any of the above,

then please contact either: KEN SELF on 821200 or JEANNE LAWRENCE on 821049

MINSTER SHOWAt the recent committee meeting it was agreed that the ‘Theme’ for 2013 would be;

‘Vintage 40’s/50’s’To those who are wondering what this entails all will become clearer when the schedule goes on sale in May.

Schedule Launch Day will be Saturday 11th May and members of the committee will be outside the Gossip Shop promotingboth the Schedule and the ‘Grow for the Show’ competition for the children.

The ‘Grow for the Show’ this year will be a change from the norm, as we are not having plants ‘to grow on’ instead we are goingto be giving out kits for the youngsters to grow us something special from seed. The kits will contain everything they’ll needexcept: water, a marker pen or crayons and lots of loving care, oh and no scissors either, although a pair will probably be requiredat some stage of the growing process. Intrigued ? The come and see us between 10.00am and Midday on May 11th and all willbe revealed.

To those who have enquired as to when the Show is this year, the answer is Saturday 20th July

More information can be found on our website at www.minstershow.org.uk

Poem I went to France one year and I gave a great big cheer.Me and my family went for a stroll in the town and I saw…A big window full of colourful sticky things that my eyes admired. I stared at the sweets and my eyes eventually grew tired.People walked past saying bonjour but nothing could make myeyes escape from that gingerbread man door.

At a Healthy Living Pharmacy Accreditation Awards evening 17 Healthy Living Pharmacies, spanning Kent from Dartford in the North West to Dover in the South East, achieved HealthyLiving Pharmacy accreditation status.  Tonbridge, Headcorn, Chatham, Hawkinge, Charing,Broadstairs, Minster and Ramsgate were just some of the other places that received awards.

Andrew Scott-Clark, Director of Health Improvement for Kent, who presented the awards, said: “Kent is among only 20 national pathfinder sites for Healthy Living Pharmacies, originallydeveloped by NHS Portsmouth.  I am extremely impressed with the level of commitment all ofthese pharmacies have demonstrated in achieving the Healthy Living Pharmacy accreditation andI would like to sincerely thank all the pharmacies involved.

“This is an exciting time for the pharmacy profession in general. Community pharmaciesmake a significant contribution to protecting and improving the health of local populations.”

To achieve accreditation, the 17 pharmacies reached the standards in a range of areas neededfor a Quality Mark. These include providing patients and the public with two enhanced servicessuch as stop smoking support or emergency hormonal contraception, as well as advanced servicessuch as medicine use reviews and the New Medicine Service which provides support for peoplewith long term conditions.

Healthy Living Pharmacies each have a Healthy Living Champion within their staff team, offering specialist confidential one-to-one advice and guidance and signposting on issues such aslosing weight, tackling excess drinking and other lifestyle challenges. Champions can also helppeople with long term conditions such as asthma, diabetes or arthritis, to monitor their own health, reducing their need to see their GPs.

They are also required to undertake further staff training and development and build goodlinks with other community organisations and services such as schools and nursing homes.

Field Pharmacy in Minster, Kent was one of the pharmacies to achieve accreditation on theevening.  Pharmacist Gill Field said: “At Field Pharmacy we have increased our health promotionactivity with eye-catching window displays to encourage people to come in store and talk to usabout health matters or issues they may have. We also provide more health literature that peoplecan take away with them.

“As a Healthy Living Pharmacy, in addition to providing weight management, stoppingsmoking and other enhanced services, we now provide a blood pressure monitoring service.”

Liz Shervington and Karen Jacobs (pictured in centre of photo, above right) are both HealthyLiving Champions at Field Pharmacy and have been working with local secondary schools topromote healthy weight management.  They also plan to increase awareness of breast cancer andstart running Macmillan coffee mornings.

All of the county’s pharmacies offer expert, confidential advice, including the treatment ofminor illnesses, which can mean there is no need to see your GP. Most pharmacies have consultingrooms where you can speak to the pharmacist in private.  Most pharmacists will be able to speakwith you within minutes and if it is very busy may ask you to come back when it is quieter tohave a longer discussion.

Community pharmacists are knowledgeable healthcare professionals who are accessible toeveryone, so make use of the excellent services available on your doorstep and talk to your localpharmacist or nearest Healthy Living Champion about some of the healthcare services you mayneed.
