“In addition to my oboe studies, RMF also invested in me as an organist, providing funds for lessons that allowed me to gain confidence and an ability to lead worship services. Through summer camp scholarships, I have had the opportunity to play with musicians from all over the world, some who spoke no English, proving our universal language is music. It is a blessing to have been able to grow as a musician, and then share those gifts in return to the community who has supported me.”

Dear Music Supporter,

Each year, we watch another class of high school graduates begin a new journey. This year, we’re sharing those journeys with you—the donors who make their musical experiences possible and shape them into the young people they are today.

Their dedication to music is a major advantage in this ever-evolving economy. Students going into education can base their teaching style off the exposure to multiple instructors in ensembles and camp experiences. Music performance majors have already performed college-level repertoire thanks to elite performance experiences like the Kutztown University Chamber Music Festival, Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. Young graduates going into rigorous math and science programs possess the self-discipline and focus from their commitment to practice schedules and ongoing concert performances. And one student plans to use music therapy to help the development of autistic children.

Every year, our school and community music programs produce students with this level of success and proficiency. Passionate students do their best when they have advancement opportunities and qualified educators. This is how RMF invests your precious dollars — by furthering the potential of capable young people.

We are proud to share this annual report with you, our donors, who generously make our work across Berks County possible. Thank you for recognizing how music education and live music performance make our young people and community as a whole thrive.

NURTURING NOTES: RMF’S FIRST MUSIC THERAPY GRANT

Beginning last year, RMF’s Outreach Committee allocated a special project grant in the amount of $2,000 to pilot a music therapy program at Prospectus Berco. This grant represents the very first award focused on music therapy. Prospectus Berco is a nonprofit agency in Berks County dedicated to inspiring people with disabilities or other special needs to lead meaningful lives by providing innovative services that promote dignity and respect.

Prospectus Berco hoped the addition of a music therapy program would allow music as an outlet for expression and contact with others, as many of their clients have limited communication skills. The program has been so successful that the Outreach Committee renewed the grant for 2018-2019.

GIFT OF MUSIC: HARPSICHORD GIFTED TO THE GREATER READING MUSIC COMMUNITY

Last summer, the Berks County music community celebrated the dedication of a Roland C-30 Digital harpsichord, purchased through the Karin & Kathleen Reinsel Early Instrument Fund of the Reading Musical Foundation. Established by the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas Reinsel, the fund wanted to see more access to Baroque and Renaissance-style music in Berks County. By allowing this instrument to be shared across Berks County free of charge, music performing organizations are encouraged to plan music that features the harpsichord into their concert repertoire. The instrument is permanently shared between Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing and Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading, but is available on loan to any organization hoping to use it.

LEAVING A LEGACY: PROFESSIONAL LEVEL VIOLIN GIFTED TO RMF’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The largest Operation Replay gift in RMF’s history came from Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Siemiatkoski of Bethlehem in 2016. In total, the couple donated 145 instruments they had collected over their lifetime. Mr. Siemiatkoski, a retired musician and music teacher, had hopes of spending his retirement years repairing and building instruments for children who could not afford them. An unfortunate diagnosis made that no longer possible, and the couple donated their instruments to RMF.

After Mr. Siemiatkoski passed away in 2018, his wife donated his personal collection of instruments to the program, including a Wahlid Stopka violin they purchased at Fegley’s Violin Shop in 1991. With an approximate value of over $8,000, the instrument far exceeds the typical Operation Replay instrument.

Mrs. Siemiatkoski generously agreed to allow the instrument to join a few other elite instruments that are awarded as part of the scholarship auditions. The instrument will be owned by RMF indefinitely, and awarded to a violinist in grades 7-11 who will be able to use the instrument at no cost for two years. Students will be selected by the adjudicators for talent, promise, and limitations due to their current instrument.

We are overjoyed to see Mr. Siemiatkoski’s legacy of music and love of sharing music with others continued through RMF.

Thomas & Alberta Siemiatkoski

CONRAD WEISER B.A.N.D. PROGRAM

RMF is thrilled to offer a new scholarship program to Conrad Weiser students: the Conrad Weiser B.A.N.D. Fund (Building a New Dream Fund), which provides funding to help cover the cost of supplies needed for marching band, indoor color guard, and indoor percussion ensemble. The Conrad Weiser Music Association established this fund last year after realizing numerous students could not participate in these activities due to the expense of uniforms and other program requirements.

CHUCK LOEB MEMORIAL JAZZ SCHOLARSHIP FUND RMF’S FIRST ENSEMBLE MERIT AWARD!

The Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest lost a member of its family when the beloved Chuck Loeb (featured on opposite page) passed away last year after a two-year battle with cancer. The Berks Arts Council and friends of the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest established an ensemble merit scholarship program, which rewards student ensembles and their commitment to musicianship and improvisation. Winning ensembles will receive a cash award and the opportunity to perform at the Chuck Loeb Memorial Jazz Jam as part of the 2019 Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest!

RMF’s Scholarship Program made the largest amount of awards ever in 2018! A total of $193,937 was invested in area student musicians, divided between $91,200 for merit awards and $102,737 for need-sensitive awards. While this report shows six of our seniors who graduated in 2018, there were 282 other young musicians who benefitted from the scholarship program.

OPERATION REPLAY DONORS

Just when we thought we may have hit our maximum year ever for Operation Replay, Berks County and Berks Country Fest proved us wrong. A Berks Country Fest kick-off event at Wyomissing Restaurant & Bakery with WEEU collected 49 instruments in just three hours, plus 62 more in June. Those 111 instruments, plus the other 115 instruments collected in 2017-2018, means a grant total of 226 instruments are now available to support our area students who cannot afford to rent an instrument!

OPTIMIZING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

We believe that the most effective and efficient music advocacy for any school is to first be a strong music program within – one led by a cohesive and talented teaching staff, supported by an interested and knowledgeable administration and board, and infused with the enthusiasm of the community. RMF was honored to be asked to create and facilitate the BCIU’s annual professional development day for Berks County music teachers last fall. Teachers from music staffs across Berks were led through a series of goal-setting and forward-thinking exercises enhancing their ability to collaborate as a district team, all to ultimately strengthen music opportunities and experiences for their students. With tremendously positive feedback from the teachers, the BCIU has invited us back this year to provide a sequel which will center on district staffs reaching across the county and into the wider Berks community for even more ways to make music meaningful for their students.

DATA COLLECTION: YEAR 3 FINDINGS

Additionally, RMF continues to collect data “on demand” for school music teachers to use in evaluating their programs and student opportunities. The request from educators this past year was to determine if their district’s K-8 general music class time is equitable and consistent when considering grade level music class instructional time across the county. While we discovered that there are a few missing pieces in the mosaic of scheduled general music classes for K-8 students throughout the county, we are thrilled to report that appropriate planned instruction in general music, taught by certified music teachers, is being provided in every public elementary and middle school building in Berks.

Thanks to having a music education advisor on staff, RMF is in constant contact and communication with the county’s music educators in our school music programs. We want our teachers, students, families, and communities to consider RMF their go-to resource for help in areas of advocacy and supportive data.

“Since I am going to school to become a music major, I know I will have to participate in many more auditions and I feel as if the RMF process helped me prepare for what’s to come. College is expensive and I’m so grateful to have received these scholarships to help pay for it. All in all, the Reading Musical Foundation has helped me grow as a person and a musician.”

RMF GRANTING MUSIC EDUCATION AND APPRECIATION to the tune of over $313,828

Over the last year, RMF has refocused our mission, looking carefully to where our grant dollars are allocated. With RMF’s mission to advance and advocate music education and appreciation, we defined four categories and awarded grants in all areas. The funds provided through these grants comes from RMF’s annual campaign, in which 100% of donations are reinvested into the Greater Reading music community. In total, these awards will support area music programs and projects with over $313,828 in the upcoming fiscal year. RMF is proud to support the following organizations and programs...

Reading Musical Foundation has provided me with opportunities I could have only dreamed of having. Music can become a pricey hobby, especially as you become more committed to your craft. Their opportunities for scholarships have allowed me to buy my own violin, take private lessons, and even spend time with my friends and learn at summer music camps every summer. I am infinitely grateful for the RMF and their generous donations to students like me. Without them, I would not have been able to contribute to music and my community the way I have and plan to continue to do.

RMF was more than just scholarship auditions for me. Through RMF, I was able to participate in a summer Jazz camp at Albright college and a worship leadership camp at Liberty University. Helping with RMF’s “Ready, Set, Play” program in a Reading Elementary School led me to realize what I wanted to do with my future. I am so grateful for the amount of support, both monetary and educational, I have received from RMF over the years.

NOTE: Elise hopes to specialize in therapy for NICU babies and youth on the Autism Spectrum or with Down Syndrome.

Scholarships are made possible thanks to a family of more than 50 scholarship funds established by area donors who wish to celebrate musical excellence and address the need for financial support of music studies. An ongoing scholarship match campaign allows for gifts in excess of $500 to be boosted to generate more awards and make an even larger impact.
