2 Worship and Music

At Hope Lutheran we know that people like to worship in many different ways. We are committed to providing a various array of worship opportunities to help you find the worship service that best suits your needs. Our traditional service is at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday Mornings. This service follows various liturgical settings throughout the year from the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) hymnal and liturgies composed by Marty Haugen. This is also the service where you will regularly hear the organ and chancel choir leading music.

Our 10:30 a.m. service is one that offers a variety of opportunities throughout the month. Typically this is a more blended or contemporary service. We have 5 teams of musicians who provide music that varies from contemporized hymns from the ELW to modern contemporary music like what you might hear on the radio. The fourth Sunday is our Family Service that we have dedicated to encouraging families to worship together. This allows families to learn what it really means to worship and to have the opportunity to participate in the Lord’s Supper. There is no Sunday School on Family Worship Sundays. Our Youth band regularly plays during family worship. Each service also has many opportunities for you to become involved. You can learn more about how you play a role in worship as you read through the worship volunteer opportunities.

Ushers serve a key role in our community here at Hope. The ushers’ initial job is to be at the doors welcoming people to worship and helping to distribute the bulletins. Five minutes before the service one of the ushers takes a moment to light the candles near the altar and occasionally the baptismal candle Throughout the service the usher worships with everyone else except during offering and communion. During these times, the ushers help to direct people where to pass the plate and where to go to receive Holy Communion. At the end of the service, the ushers extinguish the candles.

To become an usher, please contact Pastor Steve ([email protected]) for 8:15am and Roland Koos ([email protected]) for 10:30am.

A processional cross is an important piece of worship, especially as we celebrate important days in the church year. It is the role of the cross bearer to lead both the procession and recession for worship. If you are in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, we invite you to join our group of processional cross bearers.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please contact Pastor Steve ([email protected]).

The altar guild team works together behind the scenes to prepare much of what is needed for worship. One of the altar guild’s main tasks is to prepare communion for each worship service on Sunday mornings. There are often two people who work together at each service to prepare the wine and juice cups or the larger chalices for intinction. Following the services, they also help to properly store the remaining elements from Holy Communion. As we enter into a new church season the altar guild changes the altar and pulpit hangings to be liturgically correct. The altar guild also maintains the baptismal font and the general upkeep of the entire worship area.

If you are interested in learning more about the altar guild or would like to be a part of it, please contact Marcia Emborg. She can be contacted via email at [email protected].

Gift of Music in Worship Worship and music are crucial elements of our community at Hope Lutheran Church. Every Sunday we gather together to worship God utilizing liturgy and music at both of our services. For some, music is the way in which they feel most connected to God and because of that, it is important to have styles that reach out to different people. Here you will get a better idea of how to get involved with current musical offerings and who to contact if you are looking to provide special music. All music is important and adds a special element to the overall worship experience. Because of this there are many different ways to be involved! As always, if any questions surface as you read through the opportunities or if you would like to get involved, do not hesitate to contact the name listed under that ministry or one of our church staff in the office.

Readers play an important part in our Sunday worship here at Hope as they present and read the weekly scripture to the congregation. This simple yet important ministry opportunity is great for those who want to share a part in worship. We have lots of readers so this is only a once in a while commitment!

To join the list of readers or to learn more information about it, you can contact

Every month, on the fourth Sunday, we encourage families to worship together. This is a great opportunity to help children learn what worship is all about in a fun and meaningful environment. We strive to create a worship service for these Sundays that children can understand, but also one in which adults can truly worship. As a staff, we enjoy planning these services but are always looking for new ideas and help in planning these special days. If you feel that helping to organize and plan family worship is an area that fits well with your strengths, we encourage you to talk with Pastor Steve or Paul Goodman.

Our Chancel Choir meets every Thursday at 7p.m. in the sanctuary for their weekly rehearsal from September through June. They regularly sing at the 8:15 am service. The choir is open to any and all people who love to sing and desire to be in community with other musicians. Choir director, Dr. Frederick Frey says, “Our goal is to prepare the finest of church music and to provide leadership to the congregation for its song.” Dr. Frederick Frey is the choir director. For more information about choir please email Fred at [email protected].

4 Youth Band

This is a musical group comprised mostly of youth who have a passion to help lead worship. The group plays once a month, on the fourth Sunday. Each week, on Wednesday evenings, there is a rehearsal. The rehearsal currently follows play practice and begins at approximately 7:00pm in the Sanctuary. If you are a youth or if you have a youth that you think would be interested, you can contact Paul Goodman at [email protected]

We have a group of young adults and college students who occasionally lead in worship. This group focuses on modern contemporary music and practices 1-2 times a month on Sundays afternoons.

This musical group plays on the third Sunday of each month and is one of the contemporary groups that leads worship at Hope. The musical focus tends to lean towards contemporary Christian music that is heard on the radio today and the group is made up mostly of adults from our community. Rehearsals happen prior to the 3rd Sunday service at 9:15a.m. in the sanctuary. If you are interested in being a part of this group, there are opportunities available. To learn more about where your gifts and talents may work best contact director Sheila Gilbertson at: [email protected].

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for special music to be a part of our worship services. Sometimes this happens in the form of ensembles while other times it may involve one or two people.

If you are interested in offering your musical talents, whether vocal or instrumental, we encourage you to let Nancy Wilson know so that she can be in touch or Sheila Gilbertson if the opportunity arises. Email Nancy at: [email protected] or Sheila at [email protected].

Children and Family At Hope we strive to help families connect life and faith. This is done through a variety of programs that are designed for children and families. We have Sunday School each Sunday from September through May. Each summer, we gather together for a week of fun and learning at Vacation Bible School. Throughout the school year there are special activities that are designed especially for kids while others are there to help nurture the faith at home. Our goal is to provide quality programs for all ages. The following pages will help you to get a better idea of some of the ministries that happen around Hope for children and their families, while also letting you know ways to get involved if this is an area that seems to suit your gifts well. For more information about Children, Youth and Family Ministries, please visit:www.hopebozemanff.com.

On Sunday morning our children gather together in worship before being dismissed to attend their classes after the children’s message. During Sunday School the kids have the opportunity to learn more about stories from the Bible. We are always looking for caring adults to serve as teachers and helpers by volunteering to teach Sunday School. You are offering up 1 to 2 Sundays a month to help our kids grow in faith, while sometimes even learning something new yourself! If you are interested in knowing more or helping out, please contact Meredith Johnson at 406.579.0135 or email her at [email protected].

Stepping Stones is a way of equipping families to fulfill baptismal promises. We do this by bringing children and families of a specific age level together for a blessing and a short program. Each year you will be able to join your child in celebrating another benchmark of their faith journey. We hope that these events will also help you to connect with the other families of children your age, creating a more intentional and meaningful community. If you have questions or would like more information about Stepping Stones, contact Paul Goodman at: [email protected] or visit hopebozemanff.com for the full schedule.

Every summer our children gather together with other kids in the community for a fun week of Vacation Bible School. This week is spent learning about different stories that relate back to one key theme for the week. Throughout the week, children travel from station to station, learning about the stories in a different and engaging way. VBS is regularly the first week after school is out in Bozeman! If you are interested in being a part of

this fun week while helping kids learn more about God, contact Paul Goodman. There are many opportunities to volunteer either for the entire week or for the day. You will not want to miss out on this wild and crazy adventure!

Throughout the year, there will be special events that happen as a way to bring families together. Some of these events will be held at church like the annual Trunk or Treat while others may be held off site as we go caroling together. No matter the activity, it is sure to be fun, so keep an eye out for the dates and join us!

S.A.L.T. stands for Serving and Learning Together. This is a multi-aged group that focuses on providing service opportunities for families with children. On some months we go out and serve the community together. On other months we participate in a book study that focuses on different aspects of parenting faithfully. Recent topics have included Sabbath, Sticky Faith, teaching children about money and more. Please contact Paul Goodman or Meredith Johnson for more information.

Youth Ministry Our Youth program is one of the best programs in the valley! We believe that youth who in a comfortable environment where they can be accepted for who they are will grow in their faith. We provide ample opportunity for youth to gather for conversation, games, activities and be creative together. As you read through the many activities that are happening around Hope for our youth, we are sure that there is something for everyone here!

Confirmation is a lifelong process of faith formation that begins with the promises made at Baptism. At Hope we feel that it is important for youth to struggle with big faith questions on their own terms. Ultimately, we want to help our youth be able to navigate the questions that come up that may be difficult to answer. It is not our goal to provide youth with answers but to equip youth with the tools needed to wrestle with big questions and time to think through what their faith ultimately means to them. Confirmation is currently on Sunday nights and is for seventh through tenth grade youth. Youth are confirmed in the fall of their 10th grade year. If you are interested in learning more, contact Paul Goodman.

Every year when we hold our confirmation service, youth who have participated in one of our summer trips point to that experience as a pivitol place in their faith development. Summer trips happen every year and recent trips have been to New Jersey, Detroit, Vancouver, New Orleans and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. In 2016 youth will attend a mission trip in Mescalero, NM to work with the Mescalero Apache Tribe. If you have a son or daughter that is between 8th and 12th grade, contact Paul Goodman for more information about youth trips. We look forward to creating memorable faith experiences. We also regularly are looking for caring adults who will attend youth trips as

chaperones. If you are interested in this please contact Paul Goodman.

Family Camp is always a highlight of our program year. On Labor Day Weekend every year we gather with our church family (families of all shapes and sizes are welcome!) for a weekend of fellowship and fun. Family camp is mostly unstructured, giving families the opportunity to relax in God’s creation and to get to know others. We provide some programming and worship on Sunday morning as well. Our Confirmation Retreat is held in the winter and is for all youth in 7th-12th grade. For more information about these retreats, please contact Paul Goodman or Pastor Steve. We hope to see you with us at the next family retreat!

Every fall our youth gather together to begin preparing for one of the greatest weekends at the church. Throughout the fall and into the early part of the new year, our youth gather weekly to work on creating a dinner theater for members of the congregation sometime in late February or early March. This event is great fun for both those in attendance and those who are performing! If you have a youth who would like to get involved, contact Paul Goodman to learn more.

Every summer our middle school youth gather together with Christ the King Youth for a week of service in the Bozeman area community. We gather for service projects in the morning and learning together in the afternoon. At the end of the week, we schedule an activity that happens just for fun as a reward for the hard work that has happened throughout the week. Youth look forward to this week all year and when it is over, they begin looking forward to what will come next summer. If you have a youth who is going into 6th-9th grade, and would like more information about this opportunity, or if you would like to assist at all throughout the week, contact Paul Goodman for more details.

Debuting in the fall of 2015 we will be holding a Bible Study for youth in 10th-12th grade. This program will begin soon after Confirmation Sunday and will take place at local coffee shops in Bozeman and Belgrade. Each week we will gather for fellowship, coffee (or ice cream), and a focused conversation that will be led by high school students. This is still a work in progress so check on www.hopebozemanff.com in the near future for a detailed schedule.

Each year, there are a variety of retreats that take place throughout the area. We have opportunities for our youth to interact with other youth from the Southwest Montana and we look forward to providing these getaways from the craziness of school. If you would like more information about the retreats this year, please contact Paul Goodman.

At Hope Lutheran we have many opportunities to be in community with others. No matter what your interests are, we are sure that there is some ministry here at Hope where your talents and gifts can be used. Take some time to read through the many opportunities available here at Hope and don’t be afraid to reach out to the contact person listed under each ministry for more info. As you read through the ministry opportunities notice that there are many opportunities for all to get involved. Also take a look at the areas that are reached through the projects housed here at Hope. Some of our ministries reach out to local community, others the global community, and some to both areas. No matter what your passion, there is a place for you here. Explore your options and dive right in. If there is anything we can do to assist you in finding the area that best suits you, do not hesitate to contact Pastor Steve, Vicar Jon, or Paul Goodman or Dar Ellingson.

The Interfaith Quilters are a group of women from all over the Gallatin Valley who join together on Mondays from 12:30 to 3p.m. They gather to create quilts primarily for Lutheran World Relief but also serve local shelters here in the valley. Besides sending quilts to LWR, they also create quilts that are given to the Salvation Army, Haven House, Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department, and to other families in need. There is no experience necessary to join, just a willingness to learn how to be a part of this great ministry. For more information you can contact Jan Riekenberg via email at: [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at our next weekly gathering to help create warmth throughout the world!

Deborah Circle is a group for women that meets during the week on a monthly basis. If you attend the circle today, you will be a part of a Bible study that also focuses on reaching out to the greater community. Throughout the year, these women work together to provide cookies for the homebound at Christmas. They also create healthcare kits that are sent to Lutheran World Relief with the quilts. Deborah Circle meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm. This year, the Deborah Circle is working through “Bad Girls of the Bible.” The book can be purchased through Amazon. If you are interested, contact Karen Cahill at [email protected].

There are many organizations that are created to help others. In the ELCA alone we have multiple initiatives to help people fight hunger, malaria, and so much more. It is the human concerns committee that ultimately oversees many of the ways in which we can help out, educating us about different issues both locally and globally. Human concerns also focuses on events like the Crop Walk and provides meals for locals through Community Café and serving at the soup kitchen. If you are passionate about a cause and would like to get involved with what the human concerns committee is working on, contact Steve Ward at [email protected].

The Mission Resource Team, otherwise known at MRT, is a group of people responsible for trying to relay the importance of our ministries at Hope. One of the many areas that fall to this committee is the annual stewardship drive. This group is also responsible for programs such as Financial Peace University and the Great Lakes Scrip program.

If you have a passion for helping to brainstorm creative ways of educating about finances and helping to be creative when it comes to fundraising, we encourage you to contact Harry Murphy ([email protected]) or Pastor Steve ([email protected]) for more information.

Education Opportunities We provide multiple opportunities for you to continue to expand your knowledge about God, your faith, and more. You will have the opportunity while you are at Hope to continue to grow on both Sunday mornings as well as at other times during the week. This section will inform you about the different opportunities that arise for learning while also discovering where you can go to continue to learn more about the text for the week and other topics that seem relevant to your life.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to continue growing in your faith!

This committee assists in helping to create community through the activities that happen throughout the year. Some of the activities the committee assists with include planning Sundae Sunday, helping with demands for specific programs, along with other church events. To learn more, contact Pastor Steve at [email protected].

Helping Hands is a group that is dedicated to helping people within the congregation fulfill needs that may not otherwise be achievable. These men work together to bring those with the appropriate skills to help those in need. They act behind the scenes to help those in need get back on their feet. This is a ministry where many different skills are needed.

If you have a skill that you are willing to offer or would like more information about this new ministry please contact Dick Deschamps at [email protected] or Darryl Kinion at [email protected] so you can learn more and be added to the ministry database. Some of the services that are offered for congregation members include: minor household maintenance, short-term transportation, skill set and job seeking mentoring, and more.

There are two circles that meet on a monthly basis. One is the Mary and Martha Circle that meets at Bozeman Lodge on the third Wednesday of the month at 9:30am. These women work through the Gather magazine for their study, which comes from the Women of the ELCA. There is also the Deborah Circle which meets at Hope on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm. These women have a service component as part of their Bible Study that goes throughout the year.

If you have any questions about either of these circles or would like to get involved in this learning opportunity, you can feel free to contact one of our church staff, Karen Cahill for Deborah Circle ([email protected]), or Justine Bell for the Mary and Martha Circle (406.586.0768).

Every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., a group of people meet to discuss the text for the upcoming Sunday. This group is typically led by Pastor Steve or Vicar Jon. If you come to this Bible Study, you can expect to hear a little bit about the history of the text, while looking into how the text applies to the world in which we live today. The lessons for the coming month are printed in our newsletter, The Hope Herald and for the upcoming week in announcement sheet The Weekly available on Sunday. This is a great group to be a part of and we hope that you are able to join us to continue exploring the stories of the Bible that we look at each week!

On Sunday mornings, between the two services (9:30-10:15) we offer a variety of educational opportunities. Sometimes this is through a series, while other times it is just a one week opportunity. There are also Sundays where you will see multiple opportunities happening so you can pick the one that best sparks your areas of interest. This fall, we will be studying “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?” and “Luther’s Small Catechism for Adults.” We hope that during this time we are able to offer opportunities that are reaching out to people who are at all different stages in their lives. For some, this may include opportunities to learn simultaneously with their children, while for others it may be learning about how to best prepare for the future of your family, job, or lifestyle.

If there is something that you would like to see happen during this time, chat with Pastor Steve, Vicar Jon, or Paul Goodman, and we will do what we can to meet your needs or interests.

Throughout the year there are many opportunities that come up for education. Since many of these require more time than we have available on Sunday mornings, they are often scheduled during a weekday evening. Some of the opportunities that we offer include Financial Peace University, parenting classes, and classes that focus on relationship building. These opportunities tend to be more flexible since we have more time to work with when scheduling the classes.

If there is something that you would really like to see, please contact Pastor Steve or Paul Goodman to discuss course ideas.

Hope in the Community Hope looks forward to reaching out to all people, whether they are members of our church or members of our community. We feel that it is important to reach out to all people in need because that is what Jesus calls us to do. There are many opportunities throughout the community where the people of Hope can work together to create a better situation. As with all service opportunities, the amount of commitment necessary varies depending on what you desire to do. Every year, Hope sponsors an event that goes out into the community to help others remembering that it is “God’s Work, Our Hands.”

The ministries you find listed here are just a selection of the many ministry opportunities available. If you are looking to get involved with a ministry, please contact one Dar Ellingson with your interests and we will do our best to help you find an organization or cause that fits your passions and interests.

If there is anything else we can do to help, do not be afraid to contact Pastor Steve, Dar Ellingson, or Paul Goodman. We are always happy to chat about ministry opportunities both in the church and in the community!

To help meet the food assistance needs in the Gallatin Valley, The Gallatin Valley Food Bank and the HRDC have teamed up to open the Community Cafe. The Cafe offers free meals seven nights a week to "anyone who is hungry." The Community Cafe is open to everyone regardless of the reason for need. Hope Lutheran volunteers to staff the Cafe on the 3rd Sunday of each month. A sign up sheet is on the bulletin board at the church.

For more information, call Gary Bachman (406) 209-3186

or contact the café directly at [email protected]

Family Promise is a program that provides housing and help for homeless families. About four times a year, we host and feed homeless families who are seeking housing and employment in our community. Many Hope volunteers participate in this ministry to help create a warm and welcoming environment and regularly assist in this ministry to provide meals and serve as overnight hosts for those who use this service.

If you are interested in helping out the next time Hope hosts, you can check out the help wanted board to sign-up, or email Jenny Woodham at [email protected] or Barb Moe at [email protected] or contact the church office to let us know that you are interested in helping. Check out http://www.familypromisegv.org for more information.

Early each December, for children from families who may not otherwise be able to afford it, Hope welcomes them to "shop" for their family members by choosing from donated Christmas gifts. This is an extremely large project that is graciously headed by one of our members at Hope, however, it is more work than one person can handle. That is where volunteers are key to helping make this opportunity a success. Many volunteers are needed throughout the process to help gather gifts and funds, to publicize, to help set-up the church, and to help the kids shop and wrap their gifts. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Juli Bummer at [email protected] or Travis Ballanger [email protected].

Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Samaritan’s Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the life changing Good News of Jesus Christ. Hope has packed many boxes over the past few years and it has become something that families look forward to doing together and that our youth look forward to doing as part of their confirmation class.

If you would like more information about Operation Christmas Child, contact Licia Bishop at [email protected] or stop by the table that is set-up sometime in October and/or November. You can also visit www.samaritanspurse.org.

The Mobile "Soup" Kitchen is supported by several local churches that take turns providing the midday lunch on Saturdays in the turnout on Oak Street opposite the main entrance to Wal-Mart. Normally between 10 and 14 lunches are served. To help out or for more info contact John Belschwender at [email protected].

Residents of Gallatin County can count on Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) to demonstrate what happens when local churches work together to meet the needs of their neighbors. Love INC mobilizes partner churches and their volunteers to find effective ways to serve individuals and families who find themselves in difficult circumstances and who need a helping hand. Serving individuals and households in Gallatin County, Love INC is a Christian, faith-based, non-profit organization designed to connect the human, material and spiritual resources of dozens of local congregations with individuals and families struggling in difficult circumstances.

You can visit www.loveincgc.org or contact the church office if you want to get involved or for more info.

Further Information We hope that you find the information within this booklet to be helpful. As you probably have learned, the opportunities to be involved at Hope are nearly endless. Likewise most of these programs and projects have come to fruition through the ideas and energy of people just like you! If you have an idea or a passion that is not currently being met, consider starting a new ministry here!

We encourage you to contact Pastor Steve, Vicar Jon, or Paul Goodman if you would like more information or if you would like help in discerning the ways that your gifts could be put to work We are looking forward to what the current and future ministries of Hope have in store!
