Ministering WithFamily HistoryThe Work of Redeeming Souls

Hastening the WorkWe, as spirit children of our Heavenly Father, were sent to earth at this time that we might participate in hastening this great work.Thomas S. Monson, Hastening the Work, Ensign, June 2014, 5

Hastening the Work

Our job is to search out our dead and then go to the temple and perform the sacred ordinances that will bring to those beyond the veil the same opportunities we have.Thomas S. Monson, Hastening the Work, Ensign, June 2014, 5

Temple ChallengePrepare as many names for the temple as baptisms you perform in the temple, and help someone else to do the same.

Why Family History?

Do you want a sure way to eliminate the influence of the adversary in your life? Immerse yourself in searching for your ancestors and then go to the temple to stand as proxy for them...Richard G. Scott, The Joy of Redeeming the Dead, General Conference, October 2012.

Why Family History?

Why Family History?

Family history is as much about redeeming the living as it is about redeeming the dead.

How?

I imagine that in the course of a year we could help at least ten families. In five years, we could have a corps of fifty families active at some level in family history and its attendant temple work. That to me would be a successful, well-run program. Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Religious Educator, vol. 6, no. 2 (2005), 1011

37

A New Perspective

We Need Them to Put the Family Back in Family History

38

A New Perspective

Provide leadership by building family togetherness. We urge all senior members, when possible, to call their families together. Organize them into cohesive units. Give leadership to family gatherings. Establish family reunions where fellowship and family heritage can be felt and learned. Ezra Taft Benson, The Elderly in the Church, General Conference, October 1989

39

A New Perspective

I suggest one way this might be done. Families could hold a Family Tree Gathering. This should be a recurring effort. Everyone would bring existing family histories, stories, and photos, including cherished possessions of grandparents and parents.Quentin L. Cook, Roots and Branches, General Conference, April 2014
