MINING SURVEYORS AND REGISTRARS' REPORTSo

BALLARAT MINING DISTRICT.

CENTRAL DIVISION.

Mr. David Christy, Mining Registrar.

The last quarter shows an increase of 2,236 ozs. 14 dwts. 2 grs. in the aggregate yield of gold from this division (especially from quartz), which has induced several enterprising 'persons to erect new batteries.

The prospects are good for the ensuing quarter, both from quartz and alluvial. I may make special mention that the indications of the City of Ballarat Company are very ent;louraging. ,The Company expect daily to reach the gutter, and it is confidently believed that there is a bright future hi store for the western portion of this goldfield.

• The consumption of water by mining companies during the' quarter has been 19;458,000 gaqons, at an average . pnce of 3d. per 1,000 gallons. ' ' , ," ,

The improvement in this branch of mining ind~stry, not~d in my last report, still continues; but in c~nsequence oftha heavy flow of water at Kangaroo progress 1S necessanly slow.

Staffordshire Reef.:"-The Hopewell Tribute Company are still raising pajable'sto~e. ' , The Speedwell Tribute Company have been vigorously prospecting their ground at the 80 feet level, and

towards the end of the month went through a large body of atone 23 feet thick. showing payable gold all through. The Hopewell Company have nearly completed the erection of their battery, and will start crushing operations

in about three weeks; work below is being confined to making chamber and repairing drives, preparatory to breaking out quartz.

Kangaroo.-The New Kangaroo Company have been crushing very poor stone, but there is now a slight change for the better. . "

The Nil Desperandum Company have completed the erection of their crusbing plant, and have put through 175 tons of stone and mullock, which yielded 320zs. of gold. They have Bunk their shaft to ,a further depth of 55 feet, making a total depth of 136 feet, at which depth'they are putting in a crpsscut west to intersect the lode now being worked at the 81 feet level." The New 'rry Again Company continue to give payable yields. .', ' , . '".,' The William's .Fancy and Early Dawn Companies, situated to'tb~northofand adjo~niDg the Nil Desperandum

Company, have amalgamated, and are now working under the style Of the William's Fancy Amalgamated Quartz :Mining Company-a co-operative party of thirteen men. They have ,sunk a shaft 90 feet, and ,opened out on the Nil Desperalldum lode, from which a trial crushing of 141 tons was taken, which yielded 58 ozs. 11 dwts. of gold. The lode is 8 feet thick, and easily worked. The success of this compallY has given an impetus to prospecting, and several parties are sinking further north to strike the same run of stonl'.

ALLUVIA.L MINING. There is no change to report. At Kangaroo, Break.o'-Day,and Pitfield Plains several parties are g~t~ing fll;lr'retl1rns. In other parts of th,e division there is very UWe doing. " ,

BUNINYONG DIVISION.

Mr. Robert M. Harvey, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

The yields from the Main Durham Gutter at the Persevera~ce mine have improved towards the end of the quarter; rough gold up to 3-oz. pieces is met with. and there is every prospect of this the main run of alluvial drift in the Buninyong division prodng remunerative as it runs southward, where for miles it is uU\\'OI·ked. A nugget of about lib. ',"eight was found at the head of the Old Magl'ie Lead, close to the surface. It was studded with quartz, and had evidently come from a. reef close at hand. The yield fr()m alluvial workings is ahove hst quarter's. ,

In quartz mining comiderahle prospecting is going on, anfl some good yields have been ohtained,by small co-opera.tive parties at the )",mges between Hiscock's alld Magpie. 'fhe new lO-head battery at Scotchmall's bas Le~n

'started, but not kept at full work. Another new battery is being erected hy the Llewellyn Company at MllgpW, where considerable activity prevails ill quartz mining. 'l'he prospects of Lhe division generally have improved duriug the quarter.

The estimated quantity of water sold from Buninyong ReservOIr is 10,000,000 gallons, for which the sum of £3 11s. 6d. has been received by the Buninyong' Borough Council.

SMYTHESDALE DIVISION.

Mr. John Lynch, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

The yield of gold for this quarter exceeds that of the last by 550ozs. 13 dwts., the excess being attributable to the improved condition of the Haddon alluvial mines. ,The same description of mining in the Linton's portion of the division continues to give very fair results, and, with these two exceptions, it must 'be aliowed that the. district has unpleasantly receded from its wonted position. The Grand Trunk mine, at Springdallah. the existence of which dates back 'to 1862, was obliged to suspend operations a few weeks ago_ With the abandonment of old claims, and the non-substitution of allY new oues, alluvial mining is apparently approaching extinction here.

Some nopes 'are entertained of a revival of quartz mining, but, notwithstanding a few meritorious efforts, that branch of minilig is still in 0 backward state.

The dryness of the season has prevented anything being done in hill sluicing. The following are the yields from some of the principal mines;-

There is a large increase in the yield of gold (nearly 5,000ozs.) for this divisi~n during the qua.rter. This increase is principally owing to the improved yields in Cameron's Freehold, Dyke's Freehold, and the De Murska. companies.

The average yield from quartz is slightly smaner, although the total yield is larger, caused by 8. greater quantity of quartz having }Jeen operated on. 'rhe small'leader found at .the head of Eaglehawk Gully, a.nd mentioned in my former report, although very rich, has not yet resulted in leading to a payable reef. , The following are the yields and dividends obtained from the principal mines (alluvial), viz. :-

The last mentioned level is also being extended north in a large body of stene carrying good gold. During the quaner 2,121 tons of stone have been crushed, yielding 2.9300Z5. 4 dwts. of gold. or an average of 1 oz. 7 dwls., IS'13 grs. to the ton, and dividends amounting to £6,750 have heen paid, besides clearing off a mortgage of £1,800 The full com!llemellt of stamps, viz., 22 he,td, is now at work. The lwerage number of men employed is 64.

'The EgertoOc' COlnpauy.-During the quarter this company have been engaged in raising stone from their No.1 ROB!,!, No.2 Rose, and Quarry shafts, at a depth of fl'om SOO to 675 feet. A new winding.engme of 40·horse pOlVer has alw been erected at the Quarry shaft, at a cost of .£900. The average number of men employed is 17S.

The South Learmonth and Egerton Amalgamated Company during the quarter have been vigol>ously prospecting their ground. but as yet have been unsuccessful in discovering anything of a payable nature. The average number of men employed is 20.

During the first two months of the quarter the Argyle Company prospected their ground, but as nothing of a payable nature was met with operations were abandoned. The number of men employed was 4. .

North Argyle Company.-During the quarter this company have been engaged in prospecting their ground at a depth of 170 feet, but have been unsuccessful in meeting with anything of a payable nature. The number of men employed is 8. '

The Chinese Company of 12 men, registered as Ah Jack and Co., and washing the tailings from the Egerton Company's battery have obtained an average yield of 21- OZ8. per week, or a total of 29 OZ8. [) dwts. for the qnarter.

A Chinese company of 6 men are engaged ill w'ashing the tailings from the Black Horse United Cvmpany's battery, and have obtained an average yield of 1 oz. per week.,or a total of 1302:8. for the quarter.

A new claim under the name of the Rose and Shamrock Company has been taken up at Moorabool during the quarter. The company are now engaged in sinking their shaft to a depth of 100 feet preparatory to opening out. The number of men employed is 6.

Gordon.-Parker's United Company.-At the commencement of the quarter this company were raising stone from their 545-foot level, and although promising 100king,250 tons which were crushed only yielded 44 0208. 16 dwts., or an average of 3 dwts. 14 grs. to the ton. The company then drove north at this level passing through a very hea.vy slide. which greatly disturbed the country. Three separate crushings, amounting in all to 190 tons, were tried from the 400, 510, and 545-foot levels, whieh yielded 60 OZ8. 10 dwts., or an average of 6 dwts. 8'8 grs. to the ton. A crosscut is now being put in east at the 440-foot level to strike the lode obtained at the 510-foot level, which is there 3 feet wide and showing gold. The average number of men employed is 50.

Operations have not been carried on by the Mars Company during the quarter. United Miners Company.-In the early part of the quarter two trial crushings were made, one of81 tons

yielding 16 OZ8. 4 dwts. of gold, or an average of 4 dwts. to the ton, and the other of 60 tons, yielding 9 OZ8., or an average of 3 dms. to the ton. This was not considered a payable yield, and the company are now engaged in raising quartz to further test the stone, and should it yield 6 dwts. to the ton, a battery will be erected. The number of men employed is 5. '

ALLUVIAL MINING.

No mining has been carried on under this head during the quarter; 2 ozs. 18 dwts. 12 grs. of gold were obtained by a man who occasionally fossieks in the old worked out gullies.

IRON.

Lal LalJron Company, Lal Lal.-No work has been earned on by this company during the quarter further than placing an engine and gear upon the ground, the erection of which will be proceeded with as soon as funds are availa.ble fo'r that purpose. The nmri.ber of men employed is 2.

STEIGLITZ SUBDIVISION. . Mr. W. W. Greene, -"Vining Registrar.

Since the breaking up of the drought mining operations 'have been carried on to a greater extent about Elaine and Mount Doran than during the previous quarter, the supply of water having enabled the miners to get what quartz they had obtained crushed. 'fhere have been besides some fresh discoveries in reefs hitherto but partially prospected; these are all about Elaine. At Mount Doran there has been some alluvial mining, Phylan and party having discovered several nuggets in close proximity to the ground tllat turned out well some two or three years ago. In oonsequenee of this about 50 men have begun work within the last month. The sinking is about 15 feet, and some of it yields an ounce to the ton. . '

At Steiglitz there are about the same number of men as last quarter. There is but little gold obtained by the quartz miners, and the alluvial is equally unremunerative and very little worked. .

No water was sold during the quarter.

BLACKWOOD DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Jonn F. Hansen, 11fining Registrar.

QUARTZ MINING. 0

Mini~g. matters, as a whole, are very stagnant here at present. The number of miners employed in this braneh of mmmg has been getting less for some time hack, many having left the district; a fair percentaO'e of them has sought employment in 'rasmanian tin and Caledonian nickel mines. The number of men employed by t,he Sultan Company hal! been reduced by ahout 60 sinee the commencemellt of the year. The totnl qUftntity of gold ob~ned by this company remains about the same; the averag'e yield of gold per ton has been nearly double, but the quan;lty 0.£ qua.rtz crushed has on been about one-half of that of the previous quarter. The sinking of this company s mam shaft has beensto for the present, pending the further development of their lowest (SOO-foot) level.

Page 28: MINING SURVEYORS· AND REGISTRARS.

The capital called up by the North .Sultan Company- before ,and after re-orga.nization amounts to £14,000; as yet no prospects of a remunerative nature have been met with: No other public company here has been so well supported by local shareholders notwithstanding past and, present calls ;for contribution's that have been and are made upon them. They, are yet in hopes that even tualJy they will get their capital returned with interest. , The Victoria Extended Oompany, at Yankee Reef, consisting of five co,operative shareholders have of late

come upon some encouraging prospects. Their tunnel on the lode has been driven about 900 feet, and the last few crushings have left a margin of profit after paying all working expenses, including wages for 25 men employed by them.

A copious fall of rain having lately taken place the owners of water-wheels are now enabled to keep their batteries fully employed, and in most eases large quantities of quartz are ready to be operated upon. '

The Star and Stripes Company are the only one at work at Wright's Reef; their tunnel has been extended another 100 feet during the last three months without as yet intersecting the reef looked for.

An old claim, known as the Flora :nfcDonald, situated at the Korweinguboora Creek has recently been taken up again. The Undaunted Company's mine, at Blakeville, is still at a standstill,

ALLUVIAL.

Nothing of importance has occurred in this branch of mining. The late heavy rains have given all the sluicing parties a full supply of water, of which they were very short during the early part of the season. ' There is every probability, therefore, of the ensUing quarter's return being in excess of this. '

No men are employed in mining'for other metal or minerals than gold. . The average quantity of water sold was ten sluice heads, at lOs. per week;: ~er:~~uiQe-h~a,d. [ -.

-BEECHWORTH MINING DISTRICT.

BEECHWORTH DIVISION. , - ,

Mr. Alexande.r Alderdice, Mining Registrar.

The wet season may now be said to be over as.far as mining is concerned, and,a w9rse one ha,s not, beel! ,experienced in this district since the opening of the goldfields. Water races, which usually gave full employment to the claimholders have, during the past season, only enabled them to work two or three days per week; th~ retu!-"l1 of gold has, cOllsequently, been the smallest recorded during a similar period. " '-", .

The Rocky Mountain Company still make good progress with their tunnel. It 'is now in 750 feet: , The rock (granite) is very hard to work, and if boring maehineswere not used the progress would be slow. The company are working the claim' through the old tailrace, and if water were plentiful a good washing-up woUld have taken 'place this year." ' "". ," .

During the quarter several claims were taken up at' the (}overnment I,end; Buckland Gap. but nothing very satisfactory has been obtained there yet. The prospectors are sinking a new shaft, in order to be' more on the deep' ground. No.1 North has bottomed shallow, and is now sinking nearer the road. The prospect from No.1 South is about 3 grains to the dish, with 3 feet of wash. Some of the miners from here have gone to Rushworth.

At Eldorado the McEvoy Company are doing well, having obtained 859 ounces of :gold and 13 t~)llS 16 ewt: of black sand during the quarter. The ground which is best seems to run under tne township of Eldorado. It is thought that the increased returu is also attributable to the fine system of working this company is now carrying on. The Wellington Oompany's ground appears lately to have been patchy, and they are now trying .to get on to the same run as the McEvoy Company, which is more regular. The Ovens Gold and Tin COIl;lpany have done a great deal of driving during the quarter through a granite spur, but-they are now on as good ground as ever they had. The gold and sand are very coarse, and not so much water-worn as up the creek, thus giving some evidence that all the gold has not been brought to Eldorado from great distances. • The following amount of tin ore (black sand) was obtained, viz. ;-

Quartz minihg seems to'have been affected by the drought as well as alluvial. ,It is very quiet: A new reef has been found near the Kangaroo Springs, Basin Creek, the stono from which looks well, and is of a superior character to that generally found in that locality. The prospect claim is named the Caledonian, and the reef has been traced, some considerable distrance both north and south. No crushings have taken place. '

The Wallaby Company, J:lurdle Flat, are putting through their muUock hel1p, which gives an average of 5 dwts .. per ton. 'L'he stone in the claim has widened to about 14 feet, and, though not so rich as it has been, it is thought will pay well, as the mill is close to the reef.

The Sunday Reef Oompany have had a very good crushing; but the reef .is hard and narrow, and consequently the profit to'the proprietors is not large.

At Stony Creek quartz mining may be said to have collapsed for the present, the last crushings from that place yielding only about 3 dwts. per ton.

YACKANDANDAH SOUTH SUBDIVISION .

The returns from alluvial mining' in this division still keep low, on account of the dry season and, want of water, and the number of Chinese leaving mining and taking to tobacco growing. '

In quartz mining I have to report that on the new ,field at Sandy Creek the miners, are still getting up,goop. payable stOlle, and seem quite ~atisfied with the prospect, before them, Owing to nomacliinerY,as.yet Ming o~ft~'? ground there has been no crushmg. '

INDIGO DIVISION ..

. Mr. George Anderson, Mining Registrar.

Gooq prospects from qnaTtz have fixed the attention of the mining community on the reefs, a seaTch for which is beini{ made everywhere. Many quartz claims have been taken· up at the Golden Bar, Chiltern, a line of reefs which ha..~been abandoned for many years. A reef by the old Essex Reef, Indigo, is turning out some very good stone.

o Except at the Chiltern Valley mine alluvial prospects are not improving. ~'he leads at Rutherglen are stili virtually abandoned through the scarcity of water in the dams, temporary employment being found elsewhere. I have also to record the cessation of operations since last July of Banan and Co. (Durham and Caledonia Company). This, with other changes, is making alluvial matters dull on the Indigo.

The first washing of gold from the puddling machines of the Chiltern Valley Gold Mining Company took place on 16th July. since which time the very satisfactory return of 534 ozs. 13 dwts. of gold has been obtained from the drives. clearly showing the dividend properties of the Chiltern Lead when thoroughly opened up. ~'he work of con· structing main drives have sufficiently progressed to admit of a; few blocking out drives being opened. Generally speaking the prospects of this company are exceediugly good.

No water was Bold during the quarter.

BUCKLAND SUBDIVISION.

Mr. Lewis C. Kinchela, Mining Registrar.

No improvement has taken place in mining within the Buckland dfvision during the past quarter, and.I am not in possession of any information which would lead me to expect any increase of the yield of gold in the. quarter now current. .

The reduction in the number of miners upon the Buckland river arises chiefly from the number of Chinese who have given up mining for tobacco growing.

The quantity of water sold during the quarter was :-Buckland', ten heads, at from 5B~ to 208. per head; Bright, &c., seven lieads, at from 5s. to 128. 6d. per head. '

A sh;Ut has be~n' sunk ~n a portion of th~ ground recently abandoned by the New Gobur Company at Godfrey's Oreek, and payable prospects obtained. Arrangements have beeu prosecuted for obtaining machinery to work the ground which can only be effectively done by the aid of steam power.

No change has taken place during the quarter in other localities as regards this class of mining.

QUARTZ MINING.

The Just in Time Company, GQdfrey's Creek, have been vigorously prosecuting 'work, sinking a shaft. and otherwise prospecting their ground, and altering the position of their machinery. Tbey anticipate reaching crushing material during next quarter .

. An attempt is at present being made to form a. company to work the ground held under Gold Mining Leases, Nos. 941, 1,359. 1,633, and 1,690 (Beechworth), which has not yet been quite completed. Should it be successful, there is likely to be Bome improvement in mining matters in Alexandra.

. Quartz mining is not yielding as good results as were expected at the commencement of the quarter, nevertheless the Dannabrog, as well as the ,Wallaby, have had a first payable crushing. , Hunt's last crushing was poor, but as they are now working chiefly patches· of ground overlooked, or left unworked for other reasons, a steady run of yields is not to he expected.. ' .

. The Rose o( Denmark tributers are now crushing, and expect a payable yield. The A. C.'s ground is looking poorer just now. The Golden Belt is 11.18.0 falling off. . .

The Victoria mine is prospecting with tIme men and the battery. . , The Revival did not come up to expectations, but as 'there is abunda, nce of dirt now this reef will be further

tried. The yield is brought to a high total by the crushing, which was ~etoTted on the 9th .J uly last, and which

yielded the handsome return of 672 ounces for 220 tons. This crushing had been raised during the previous quarter. Alhivial mining has averaged 25s. per man per week. There ~s no water being sold here. nor are any miners employed mining for other metals or minerals than gold.

WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, .Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

All the tribute parties in this subdivision are obtaining payable yields. The tribute pnrty holding the Morping SLar prospecting claim, more especially, are m:tkillg high ~ages. Messrs. Moore and. Kr.opp have again obtained a fine yield from the feeders of the Main Leviathan Reef; approxim'ately they han;, without outlay, secured'.£l,OOO a man for seven months' work. Further prospecting has led to the disl~overy of a similar vein further south on the ~ame reef. and thh is llowbeing worked by the prospeetors, Joseph .Mayall and another, and bids fair to yield 4 or 5 ozs. to the Ion. The veills are small-an avemge of 6 inches only of crushing stuff beiug taken-and run along a so-caUed buck-vein which, however. is also auriferous. ,

Another weJl.d<:'fiued vein h:ts beendi~eovered b,V Weher, on the All Nations Oreek, yielding over 17 dwts. to the ton; its value has, outside of a trial crushing of Wi tons, not been 'ascertained as yet. \ The vein' is fully 3t feet thick, with a .clean western wall. ,

The Frnnklin tributers discovered a 80ft diorite lode not hitherto worked in that mine, and have obtair.ed the handsome yield of nearly 16 dwts. to the ton; this must be considered payabJe even under fJresent disHdvalltages; when, however, the Lady Franklin Company shall have p.recled batteries close at hand the expellse of packing will be so materially reduecd as to render this discovery of ccnsider<l.ble additional value. Com:Jl'ellensively, the district may be said to be looking up, and during the next quarter good results may be expected from so many new finds in quartz.

The alluvial miners have made unusually good wages during the quarter. ' No water has been sold. Gold alone is mined for here.

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION. lJfr. A. B. 'AinstlJorth, lJfining Surveyor and Registrar.

There is nothing new to report oObis subdivision. The three mines at work have obtained poor results only. and their prOSDeets are not mnch better. .,

Alluvial miners have averaged about 20s. a week per man. , Water is abundant, and none is being sold. No miners are at present engaged in mining for other metals or minerals than gold.

MIT'rA MITTA NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. John C. Forster, ,Mining Registrar.

I have to report, for the quarter ending 30th September 18i7, that mining operations have given general satisfaction, the returns averaging 19 dwts. 13 grs. per ton., A number of cl:tims have been let on tribute on satisfactory terms. At tne commencement of the year a large number of miners will find employment in connection with the smelting works now erected for the treatment of the copper ore discovered in almost every claim producing gold. The present number of miners employed on this goldfield are about 350, many having recently left for other goldfields.

MJTTA MITTA SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. W. H. Cocltrane, Mining Registrar.

There is nothing fresh t'o report this quarter.

JAMIESON SUBDIVISION. Mr. W. H. Edwards, Mining Registrar.

The Venture Company have been crushing from the big reef, but with poor results, and are ~ow prospecting for the old strike of gold.

The Gleeson's Lease Company have stopped work for the present, having called for tenders to let the mine on tribute.

The Perseverance have six men driving a tunnel north, and are prospecting various portions of the mine. The Specimen Reef Company have been driving the south tunnel during the past quarter, but have not as yet

found anything payable. ' The crushing from the Mack's Oreek Company did not answer expectations; they are now putting in a level

from the main shaft, 80 feet from the bottom hivel. , The Poverty Company are driving a main tunnel, and expect to cut the reef in about 50 feet. The Alabama Company are rising at the extreme north of the bottom level, where they have good prospects. The Sailor DiU's Company have only just completed the erecLion of machine, and are to commence crushing

next week.

SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT.

SANDHURST DIVISION. Mr. N. G. Stepnens, Mining Registrar. ,

, The'yield of gold during the past quarter is less than nsual, and mining affairs have been considered to be in a. very dull state, but there has been an extraordinary number of hopeful and import:tnt discoveries in the principal lines of reef. aud in every part of the district. In connection with hopeful prospects it may be mentioned that Mr. LanseH has purchased two large mining claims, the Sandhurst Company's on the American Reef, and the Oollmanu and T!tcchi CompMuy's claim on the Wethcrall Reef. botll with machin<'ry thereon t'l'hich has lain idle for years past; also the. great.er portion of shares in the Great Nortnern Company's claim on Johnson's Reef North, which otherwise would now be idle.

A great desire is evinced for the importation of rock-boring machines and diamond drills, !lnd stops are being taken to import them as soon as possible. One eompany coutemplates letting a contract for sinking and cross.cutting to Ford and Oompany, with their patent rock-boring machine. '.

Investors say they would pay a call if the prospecting work, such as sinking or cross.cutting, could be executed in, say, a month, where they would not if it took, say, three months to do it. -It may therefore be expected that in a. short time mining operations will be carried on much more expeditiously, arid probably with improved results. It is to be regretted that the Hustler's Reef Company's claim having ceased work the water has risen considerably in several claims, and serious results might ensue. Several claims on the Garden Gnlly line have also been flooded on account of the stoppage of some of the claims.

Much attention has lately been given to the invention of safety cages and signal~. Messrs. Jackson and Middleton have exhibited a safety cage, the principle of which is much admired; and Mr. Jennings, milling manager of the Pandora Company, has constructed a simple and effective contrivance for notifying ihe engine driver in case of over-winding or starting in the wrong direction. The engineer at Koch's Pioneer Company (:Mr. Saul) has also constructed an improved cut-off, or expansion valve, for their crushing engine, which effects a material saving in fuel, and gives great control to the governors.

Several prospecting claims in alluvial have been taken up in different parts of the district, but the only one of importance is that at Wilson's Hill, Marong, where a considerable number of men are at work, and they appear to be qUIte satisfied from the results of a few claims bottomed that they have struck a. good lead; the sinking is about 130 feet.

W.AR.ANGA NORTH'SuBDIVISION. Mr. Henry Hicks, Mining Registrar.

Alluvial mining during the quarter has attracted much attention. A rush has set in at the Old Le~d,'RuBh-worth, where there are now about 400 miners present, the number still increasing. , " ,

, The ground is that lately prospected by Government subsidy; the sinking is from 25 to 32 feet, and the average yield about 1 oz. 5 dwts. per load. Up to date, nine claims were on gold. The run of gold is narrow, from 3 to 16 feet, and the washdirt from 9 inches to 2 feet: ''''fork is carried on with D;luch energy. '

Quartz mining is in a very satiSfactory state; the present appearance of ,many of the mines most encouraging. The stamping machine at R. U. G. M: Company, Frenchman's Reef, is now complete. ' '

QUARTZ MINING. .:

In my last report special attention was called to the rapid . and substantial improvement which had recently taken place throughout the division in the prospects of this class of mining; and I am now glad to be, able to state that, as a rule, the quartz mines which are being worked are looking exceedingly well. The most of them are pro-ducing unusually good yields, anqpromise to be highly remunerative to the sh!lfeholdera.' .

The owners of the Professor Pearson claim have crushed 84 tons of stone during the quarter, which. gave a return of 78 ozs. 9 dwts., or an average of nearly an .ounce to the ton. This claim is situate at Chinaman's Flat, on the Great Western Reef, a~d was lately taken up and registered as a prospecting claim by Messrs. Wilson and,Dark. The depth of sinking is 50 feet. . .' , . .

The mine of 'the Great Extended Company at, Bluchers is now being prospected bya drivj:l, being continued to the north along the course of the lode. ,The Alexandra Tribute Company have been engaged during the quarter in putting in a cross-cut from a deep shaft lately sunk on' their claim.' They are now driving along the crown' of the reef, which shows a large body of stone; and they have got nearly 200 tons of payable stone. at graBs. !twill be noticed that this company have crnshed during the'quarter 250 tons of stone for the public.' ,

Mr. William Noell, of Maldon, has completed satisfactory arrangements. with Mr. Isaac, Lyons, of ' the Mariners' Reef Company, for the right to operate on and extract gold from the sand, debris of tailings, and quartz, now lying on the claim of the company at Mariners' Reef. The' agreement between the parties is to continue for five years. The company get 10 per cent on the groBs'yield of gold; but Mr. Noell has to provide at his own expense all necessary steam machinery and appliances for successfullY treating the pyrites. He has also undertaken to provide sufficient labor to operate upon at least 100,tons of tailillgs every week. The steam machinery and appliances required are now in course of erection, and will soon be ready; their cost will be about £2,000.. .

The Manners' Reef Company crushed 1,000 tons of stone during the quarter for 200 ozs. 'of gold. They also orushed 500 tons for the public, whicll gave a return of 275 ozs., or an average of.over half an ounce to the ton. They have.a battery of 20 stamp-heads crushing by night and day., '

ALLUVIAL MINING.

The Duchess of Timor Tribute mine has not been so prospe~ous as usual during the quarter. T!Iere was lately a slight hitch in the machinery, which caused delay, but only for a short time. The water is still very heavy in this mine, and all the operations in connec~ion ~i~h it :are attepqed'1'i~h gr~at expense; but, in spit~ of a.4 draw~ backs, this is a first-class property. ,

The Band of Hope mine is worked out. The pumps have been drawn, and the machinery is about to be sold. A block of the lease has. been let on tribute, and the ground' will' be worke(,r by horse.power.,: Nearly all the gold obtained in the Queen Company's mine har, been got by the ·No. 7 tl'ibu&e party, and their success is due. ~o their having erected machinery. The ground of this mine is far too wet to be successfully worked by horse-pO,wer. The water of the Try Again Company's mine at Timor has at ,last been baled out, and the mine was ha:r:dedQver to the tributers on the 4th September; and since that time the trihuters have been busily employed in putting new drives into the mine for the purpose of breaking into payable ground. . . ' . " ,

A fine yield has been obtained by 1,he Bismarck Company. In addition to· declaring dividends during the qua, rter .t~ the value of £5,850. this company ha,v:e,paid off £400 of a C1frrent ,liability ahd 100 g1fineas as a bonus to theIr mlUlllg manager, Mr. G; F. Beaven. , '. . ' .

MAJORCA SUBDIVISION.

Mr. John M. Murplty, Mining Registrar.

I have the honor to report that during the past quarter mining in this subdivision has been very dull except at Rocky Flat, where .one or two claims have been doing fairly. 'fhe Reliance and Kong Meng claims, on the Hanoverian Lead, are still unworked, although it was anticipated that the two claims above-mentioned (amalgamated) would during the past quarter have been started under the title of the Golden Valley Company. The Prince Alfred Quartz. Mining Company, Deed's Reef, have suspended operations for the purpose of erecting machinery. The Duke of Edinburgh Company (Walker's Paddock) remains still unworked.

AMHERST DIVISION.

Mr. Joseph Smith, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

In alluvial mining the men have not obtained average wages, except the Hoffman Gold Mining Company, Mount Greenock, which produced 4040zs. of gold during the quarter, giving 20 men (the number employed) 20 ozs. 4 dwts. per man.

The Golden Gate Company, Rocky Flat, broke into the old workings of the Sadowa Company, which flooded them out, and have been engaged most of the quarter in pumping.

In quartz mining, the Church Hill Company, Amherst, have hit upon a patch of 36 tons of stone which yielded 225 ozs. of gold, giving 6 ozs. 5 dwts. per ton.

There has not been anything collected from the sale of water during the quarter, owing to the reservoir being under repair.

AVOCA SUBDIVISION.

Mr. D. O'Leary, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

In this division alluvial mining has been progressing very favorably during the quarter. At Homebush, the washdirt in the now defined lead continues yielding rich returns; 45 consecutive machines realising 1,0460zs. 12 dwts., which include several nuggets varying from t oz. to 60 ozs. The supposed course of the lead for a con· siderable distance has been secured under lease. On the Rutherford Creek several extended claims have been taken up on the supposed continuation of the Lamplough old lead, where some very encouraging prospects have recently been found •. Suitable machinery has already been erected on the prospecting claim.

Quartz mining has been dull during the quarter.

DUNOLLY AND TARNAGULLA DIVISIONS.

Mr. W. G. Couchman, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

IJunolZy IJivision. I have to report a very decided improvement in quartz mining operations during the quarter. This is in a

great measure owing to the successful operations of the Queen's Birthday Company, which has been and is getting very excellent returns. This success has stimulated other persons to again test reefs which have for a long time been abandoned. A company termed the King's Birthday Company has been incorporated to work the lease (No. 1993) south of the Queen's Birthday Company; and another company to work the lease south-east of it, and styled the South Birthday Company, the lease being that known as Borwick's (No. 1995); several other leases have been taken np in this locality, .

Queen's Birthday Company have crushed 1,925 tons of stone for a yield of 2,289 ozs. This stone was taken from the 335 and 400 foot le,els south, and from the stopes above these levels. An ail' shaft is being sunk a consider. able distance south of the working shaft, in order to better ventilate the mine, and tenders are called for sinking a new main shaft a considerable distance south of the present working shaft. The mine is looking very well indeed, and gives promise of good and long continuous yields. Fifteen heads of stamps are at present employed crushing stone, and it is intended to get 12 heads more to work as quickly as possible. I am informed that the <lOO-foot level is driven upwards of 1,500 feet south, and is still carrying very good stone, with good stone also under foot. The dividends paid by the company during the quarter amount in the aggregate to £1 6s. per share (6,000 shares), and a handsome sum has been placed to reserve fund account.

Crook and Co., Det Bet Reef, continue to get very good stone; 33 tons yielded 79 ozs., and the mine is still looking well. Queen's Reef Company have not had any crushings during the quarter, but report that the stone being broken out bids fair to yield 1 oz. per ton, and it is 4 feet in width; they are driving south at the 400-foot level, and north from No.1 shaft. The Sydenham Company (lease 1740) are about resuming operations, tenders being invited for completing the sinking of the shaft, and work will be started without delay. The Working Miners' Company, Christmas Reef, have suspended operations, but with a view of shortly resuming them by testing the reef at the deepest level. Calder Brothers have discovered a new reef or leader in the alluvial workings at the head of Norfolk Gully, Bet Bet; the stone is narrow at present, but is widening out as it is sunk down upon, and shows gold in payable quantities. The Band of Hope Company, Monday Morning Reef, have completed the sinking the shaft, heve erected a whim, and are now cross-cutting west for the reef, and are very 'sanguine as to results. Bond and party are working Starke's Reef, near the reservoir, and report getting a little gold in the rubble. The Welcome Company, Advance Bealiba Reef, expect to make a start very soon, their shares being now in the market.

In alluvial mining no new ground has been opened. A nugget weighing 12 ozs. 14 dwts. has been obtained at Little Chinaman's Lead, and it is reported that another one weighinj!; 40 ozs. was obtained at Clover's Gully, and sold at Maryborough, but the miner who is credited with obtaining it denies the truth of the report.

Tarnaflulla Division. Nothing noteworthy has occurred during the quarter, but it is reported that the Poverty Reef will shortly be

in work again, and it is hoped that this will induce miners to take up and test some of the numerous very valuable but neglected reefs in this locality.

INGLEWOOD DIVISION. J/r. W. H. Coffey, Mining Registr.ar.

No change worthy of note has taken place in this division with regard to mining operations during the last quarter. ,

WEDDERBURN DIVISION. Mr. John Reach, Mining Registrar.

Mining opera~ions !n this division stiH continue in a v~ry stagnan~ state. There are no quartz reefs working. The number of alluVial mlllefS are on the decrease, partly owmg to shearmg season having commenced.

No water is stored for sale in this division.

REDBANK SUBDIVISION. Mr . .D. O'Leary, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

The usual dullness in mining still prevails in this subdivision. Nothing deserving special notice has occurred during the quarter." " ,

ST. ARNAUD SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. W. G. Couchman, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

Mining operations continue in a very depressed state in this subdivision. The Greenock Reef Company still continue to have payable yields, but beyond this there is nothing of note

to report.

ST. ARNAUD NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. W. G. Couchman, lJfining Surveyor and Registrar:

, Mining operations have not improved in this subdivision since the date of.last report. The Sandhurst and St. Arnaud Company are carrying on operations in the lower levels with good returns.

The Lord Raglan and St. Arnaud Company are extending the 400·foot level north, and intend to sink the shaft deeper shortly

Nothing of impor~ance has occurred in alluvial mining.

CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT.

CASTLEMAINE DIVISION. ,Mr. Thomas L. Brown, .Mining Surve!J(w and Registrar.

The only new find during the quarter is a quartz Jeader east of Burke's monument, which yielded 1 oz. 4 dwtll. (nearly) to the ton.

A trial crushing of cement from the surface of Lu~hingtQn Hill, yielding nearly 3 dwts. to the ton, has caused II lease to be applied for, aud it is illlended to erect crushing machinery on the ground, thele being II large quantity of cement in the looali!'y.

In both alluvial Hnd quartz mining the llVer!l!!e yields are small; improved sy~tems of working are necessary to put through larger quantiti~s. j\lany are slill !ll1xiously awaitillg the completion of Colihall water supply.

'fhe Central Company have ereeled a Hew 15·hcad battery of revolring stamps. lind made other improvements. The Daniel O'Connell Com puny have completed the erection of their machinery, aud made several improve-

ments therein. ' ,', , The, Eureka Consols "have fixed a new ladder-way, and are continuing their 4(]Q·foot level, now in 670 feet

north of shaft, the reef being 15 feet thick, about 2 feet of each face being taken for crushing. The Ctiledonia mille is let on tribute to a Sandhurst party, who are prospecting by drives from the main shaft.

:FRYER'S CREEK DIVISIO:N. Mr. Mark Amos, lIIining Surveyor and Registrar.

POPULATION. There has been a slight increase during the past quarter in quar~z mining.

PUDDLING AND SLUICING.

Some very good yields have been obtained by different parties during the past three months. tn sluicing, a. party of four have averaged about £5 per week per man, working old grOUlJd abandoned many years ago, and after paymg ~t the rate of .£9 per week for 6 ~Iuice·btads; this ground is likely to continue payable for a considerable time to COllle. In the neIghborhood of the Horseshoe Bend the puddlers occflsion~lIy find some good patches. and are .altogether doing very well. At Tarilta !lnd Vaughan there are a few alluvial claims which have re,cently paid very well for 'Working, and are likely.to prove remunerative for some time to come; the alluvi.al diggings ~e nor yet exhausted.

Page 35: MINING SURVEYORS· AND REGISTRARS.

33 I .'

The Duke of Cornwall Company have been doing a great deal of dead work during the past quarter, twclve men having been constantly employed putting in cross-cuts and levels. The claim is principally worked by tributers; the lode being worked is from 5 to 6 feet wide, and likely to pay very well. ,

Rowe Brothers', Cattle's Reef, still maintains a high average yield, viz., 9 dwts. to the ton. at a depth from surface of 155 feet; the lode 7 feet in thickness. Some magnificent specimens were unearthed a short time since. On the Ferron's Reef, their average yield is about 3 dwts. to the ton; lode 6 feet in thickness, at a depth of 80 feet; this latter claim at present is only moderately remunerative, but the supply·of quartz is apparently inexhaustible.

The Ferron's R·eef Company.-'l'his company have completed the various additions and improvements alluded to in last report, viz., erected a new winding engine of 25 horse-power, new winding gear, poppet legs, two new cages (with coverings), enlarged and cut the main shaft down 200 feet; the total cost being about £900. The plant and machinery belonging to this company is in a very efficient state, and the prospects of the min\) highly favorable; the quartz now being raised, taken from between the 200 and 330 foot levels, the crushing stuff 20 feet in thickness, and yielding about 8 dwts. to the ton.' .

The Fryer's Company.-This mine is now getting into fair working order again, some 34 men being employed, the manager contemplating engaging more during the present quarter; the quartz lately ra,ised has been taken from the 230-foot level, averaging 7 ?wts. to the ton; the width of lode 3 feet. Many of the men are now occupied driving cross-cuts, putting up rises, and sinking winzes; altogether, the mine is opening up well, and . looks very promising. Some extra good crushings would be highly acceptable, infuse new life and vigor into the Ijlanagement, and afford encouragement to other claimholders in the vicinity.

Anglo-Australian G. M. Company has lately been re-organized, sufficient English capital having been imported to enable the manager to open out and develop the mine in a satisfactory manner; the successful working of the

· large· area of ground held by the company is looked forWard to with considerable interest, and it is greatly to be desired that the English shareholders should realise some good dividends.

Black Hawk Company.-During the past quarter a party of tributers have been working at this claim with very fair returns, 9t dwts. to the ton being the average from a crushing of 170 tons; this gives good wages to the

· men employed, and there is every probability of other profitable returns during the next quarter. .

HEPBURN DIVISION • . .lfr. Tlwmas Hale, llfining Registrar.

Cornish Quartz Company have cut leaders from Crown Reef; they are working at different levels. It will be-seen by the tables that the proceeds of two months only is given. . -

Specimen Hill Company are driving On lowest levels, and are stoping in 380 and 460 foot levels. Wilson's, Blind Creek, are down 70· feet; they have finished erection of engine and battery; eight heads

stampers are at work. _ _ Ajax Company are down] 50 feet. The mille looks well. Willard and King, at 110 feet, broke through into the Ajax Company's claim. The mine looks remarkably well. Union Tunnel have got into a good run of stone towards'N ew North Hepburn lode'; it is said to average

10 dwts. Alluvial workings are somewhat retarded for want of water. Water has· been scarce; 36 heads are the, most that can be said to have been actually sold, three shifts

per day. .

TARA DALE AND KYNETON SUBDIVISION. Mr. Thomas Orwin, J.l1ining Registrar.

. Although there has not been an increase in the yield of gold this quarter in this division, still there is a. considerable improvement in· mining, especially in quartz mining. ~ever!l'l miners have lately been trying old reefs which were worked many years ago and left, and in ,three instances they are likely to succeed. On the Belltopper Ranges a claim called the Humboldt, taken up by Messrs. Thureau and others, is yielding over 2 ozs. per ton. Another claim on the" summjt of the ranges-and also an old claim-is being worked, and yielding 1 il oz. per ton.

The Victoria Company have cleared out and ex:plore~ the old workings of what was formerly called Hughes' Reef, and have encouraging prospects; they are now sinking a shaft on the north of the claim, aiming for a new and solid portion of t,he reef. A new claim on the Back Creek, near the Leviathan claim, was taken up during the quarter. The party obtained one crushing, which yielded over 1 oz. per ton.. The reef is not thick, but that will pay well. There are. several shafts being Bunk on the roads as road claims, where prospecting for reefs is going on. . The United Kingdom Company have struck a new shoot of gold that will take them a year to work out. The

Extended United CompallY are still driving for the gutter known to run through their claim.

TARRANGOWER DIVISION . .Air,. Robert Nankivell, ,iJlining Surveyor and Registrar.

Mining has not improved during the quarter. The quantity of gold is about the same from our quartz mines, but the average per ton is considerably less. The owner of the North British mine has made several improvements on the mine. A winding engine has been erected, the shaft divided and put in good order, and a contract Jet to sink 50 feet, to test. the reef at a deeper level. '.

The Union Oompany are still driving their gOO-foot cross-cut eastward in search of the reef. The rock, which has hitherto been very hard. has slightly changed for the better, and is intermixed with quartz. Other parties are employed breaking quartz from the gtopes in diff"rent parts of the mine for crushing. Water baling from this mine is iii heavy item of expense. The quantity is 14,000 gallons daily; 3,300 gallons of this quantity is running over from the Oentral Company's mine, which adjoins on the south. , · The first crushing from the German Reef Company's mine after getting the water out was 126 tons for 39 ozs. 8 dwts. of gold. Since this crushing the reef has improved; the storie now being broken is much better in quality. A crushing now going throngh the mills is expected to give a much better yield.

The tribute parties in the Alliance and Speculation Companies' mines are getting out quartz that gives nearly an ounce per ton. One crnshing of 22 tons frClm the Speculation mine gave 24 ozs. 6 dwts, of gold.

The Eaglehawk United Company have let their mille Oil tribute for a term of five 'years. The water-baling question has now become a very seriolls matter along our principal lines of reef. Many of our companies have suspended work in the deep ground. and allowed the water to rise. In the Eaglehawk Limited Company's mine it, has risen to the 200-foot level, and is now affecting the claims and mincs north and south of it very seriously. . . No water was sol~ during the quarter .

Mr; James Travis, 1J.1ining Registrar. 'fhe crushing from the Good Hope (tribute) was very poor indeed, being by far the lowest average ever obtained

There has been a decided improvement in quartz mining during the quarter. Only two companies have crushed; , the yield from each has been satisfactory. The striking of a new shoot of rich ,stone by the Hit or Miss Oompany in the Bismarck ground has improved the prospects'of both companies. The following arc the companies at work:-

'1'he Bismarck United G. M. Company.-Oontinuing lower tunnel on course of reef. They have not crushed during the quarter. A small parcel'obtained from a winze in the upper. tunnel, and from the shoot lately cut oy the Hit or Miss Company, will be put through in a few days. There are eight men employed.

The Gippsland Oonsols.-'-This company have had three crushings during the quarter; 559 tons yielded 3iO OZ8. 3 dwts. '£here are 21 men employed in the claim.

The Florence G. M. Company have had a crushing of no tons, yielding 65 ozs. Three men employed. ',rhe Stratford and Avon has again heen taken up by Mr. J. Rice, and another lease applied for. The Sterling Q, M. Company continue to drive their tunnel on the course of the reef; they are now in 1,020 feet. The Hit or Miss Q. M. Company, who are continuing the Bismarck tunnel to get into their own ground, struck

rich stone near their boundary. , No minerals other than gold milled for. No water sold.

STRIN"GER'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. W. M. Smith, Mining Registrar.

A reference to the quantity of quartz crushed,. the total yield of gold obtained, and the average yield per ton, will show that there has ,been little or no change in quartz mining in this division during the past quarter.

The mine held under James Rice's lease has been in full swing during the quarter, with the exception of a few weeks' during repair of ttamways. The Lily of the Valley Company, late Wilson and Barthold's lease; have. commenced work again, and have also let a portion of the mine on tribute. I hear of good prospects being

The Star and Thomson Company have not yet succeeded in striking payable stone, but are sanguine of success. Alluvial mining has been very quiet during the quarter, owing to floods., Most of the miners have been working in spurs up from the river, which would pay well with proper appliances, but owing to the distance to take the wash to river their workings did not pay.

The first specimens of this remarkable fossil were obtained through the circumspect exertions of the Government Geologist of New South Wales, C. S. Wilkinson, Esq., F;G.S., through whosedeparlmental action also many other palreontologic relics of the sister colony became known. Some of the first discovered specimens of this apparently rare fossil were hardly half the size of those kindly transmitted by Dr. Bamard, the dimensions of which may be estimated from Major Shepherd's excellent lithograms. The fomi verges rarely into oval; one, of the valves· is occasionally more convex than the other. The ramified main-ridges number nsually six, they are sometimes slightly flexuous; the interstices, formed by the reticulations, constitnte often deep impressions; the edge of the valves acutely. attenuated; the

,laminre closely appressed to each other, the exterior ridges nearer to the next than to the margin, and from these lesser elevations ·radiating. Seed closely filling the shallow cavity, in large specimens measuring rather abov.e one inch In length and breadth; its substance too much decayed in the samples hitherto examined to ascertain the mode of attachment. The p€duncular or pedicellar cicatrix also not yet observed, to arrive at a knowledge of the relative position of the seed.

The plant, producing 'this remarkab,e fruit, may perhaps have belonged to the order of Sapindacere ; but with the material at present available it is impossible to fix its exact ordinal position, as no external

,resemblance indicates any close relationship to existing genera. Some similarity to a small ostreoid sh~ll renders the genus Wilkillsonia' readily recognized among other fqssils. It has received a record in the documents of the Victorian Mines Department, though not yet fmmd in our colony; because as this plaut proves to be coeval to the'series, published by us here, it is likely that also this new addition will be traced yet to .localities within our colony, It ,thus also proved, that the fossil treasures of that particular tertiary period, the upper pliocene, to which we have added already many significant forms, are as yet by no means exhausted.
