The Schilling Companies team consists of the Schilling family, along with over 30 employees across the various Schilling owned companies. MPB provides the construction work, while the functional staff teams in accounting, business management, and property management all work directly with each other. Together they ensure a streamlined process, from complete design-build services to facility operations. The Challenge According to Staff Accountant Kelli Hill, MPB had a manual, labor intensive payroll process before implementing the StreetSmart solution. “We were constantly calling out to the field to check on employees’ time, what we were paying them for, what we weren’t paying them for, and so on. It wasn’t very efficient,” said Hill. Benefits • Automated payroll processes results in reduction of labor costs • Improved customer billing accuracy • Enhanced employee safety • Improved efficiency of workers StreetSmart has helped our accounting department significantly. We’ve eliminated the manual aspects of payroll, along with most of the labor hour associated with that process. All around, we’re happy with StreetSmart. The SolutionWhen MPB was introduced to Streetsmart® with mobile timesheets, the product

seemed to present an ideal solution to the payroll challenge. Today, the

construction company is utilizing the mobile timesheet functionality to minimize

payroll labor costs while improving the accuracy of both payroll and customer

billing.

MPB employees use a StreetSmart-enabled mobile device to clock in and out of

each job they work on throughout the day.

“For example, Joe may start at one job in the morning, clock out and then back

in for his break, and then clock out before heading to his afternoon location. He’ll clock in and out of that job too. In the accounting area, we can use that data from StreetSmart to know exactly how much time we need to bill to each customer, as

well as how much to pay Joe for the day,” says Hill. The MPB accounting system can import data from the StreetSmart application,

whereas before, Hill explains, “We had to manually enter the data, which was time consuming and could lead to errors.”Hill continues that the accounting department can easily make changes to the

mobile timesheets.

“Let’s say an employee forgets to clock out for the day. When he calls me to correct that, I can use the GPS functionality to know exactly when that employee left the jobsite and make the adjustment accordingly,” she says.In addition to more accurate payroll and customer billing processes, MPB can use

the data from StreetSmart to properly estimate jobs, verify jobsite resources, and

minimize employee overtime.

The ResultsFor MPB, the GPS functionality offers two clear benefits: “We have visibility into

the employees’ day-to-day activities, so it’s easy to verify their payroll in addition to answering questions about customer billing,” says Hill. The second benefit is relative to safety: “Our employees often work in remote

areas, so we know their locations if anything should happen, even as simple as a

flat tire,” she says.According to Hill, “StreetSmart has helped our accounting department significantly. We’ve eliminated the manual aspects of payroll, along with most of the labor hours associated with that process—amounting to a savings of 20-30 hours per week. All

around, we’re happy with StreetSmart. It’s been a very positive experience for us.”She concludes, “With the StreetSmart technologies, we are confident in our data to

provide our customers accurate billing and accountability, which in turn makes for

healthy, long-lasting relationships with our customers.”
