The MINI can easily be mounted in or on light fixtures, either at the factory or in the field. The small surface area and IP65 rating of the MINI along with the available power packs means the MINI can be integrated into almost any fixture. The available interior/exterior mounting bracket for the sensor and power pack and RJ-12 jack facilitates streamlining of fixture design and assembly. B.E.G. Controls welcomes custom product specification requests from OEM customers to find solutions that will suit their needs.

MINI – One Size Fits All

One Sensor, Many Solutions ...and many more!

The MINI can provide several solution options for virtually endless applications. The available power pack control options, choice of two optics for low or high ceiling applications, combination of PIR motion sensor and photosensor, and the ability to connect multiple sensors in parallel to a power pack to increase a zone’s detection area will give designers flexibility in granularity of control and value engineering while still satisfying project specifications and energy building codes like California Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The IP65 rating and small surface area makes the MINI suitable for a number of complex environment applications where other sensors won’t perform well or last long before failing.

RJ12 splitter

The MINI offers several benefits to both the installer and end user. The RJ-12 jack connection of the sensor to the power pack saves time and prevents errors in wiring. Should an additional sensor be required in a zone after the project is installed, a simple RJ12 splitter can be added, this makes adding another sensor simple.

The wireless infrared remote control feature allows the sensor to be programmed, tested and configuration after the sensor is installed, so there is no need to worry about getting up to the sensor to change dip switches if the sequence of operation changes during the project or usage patterns of the space requires a setting change down the road. The high quality of B.E.G Controls sensors means few or no call-backs for the installer, and years of worry-free operation for the end user.

Warehouse spaces offer an excellent opportunity for lighting control. Shelve aisles and traffic areas can be zoned separately from traffic areas to turn off or dim unoccupied areas, and then turn on or raise the light level when a person or vehicle enters the area. Warehouses with skylights offer additional opportunity for savings through daylight harvesting. This reduces operating costs through reducing energy consumption and increasing LED or lamp life, and compliance with national and local energy codes that require lighting control in these areas.

In the example on the left, the traffic areas are divided into five control zones. The loading dock (Zone 1) uses a single power pack to switch the lighting and the detection range is extended by connecting one MINI primary sensor and two MINI se-condary sensors. The traffic aisles are divided into two zones each (Zones 2-5), using a power pack and primary sensor in each zone so the lights will not switch on until a person or vehicle is detected by the sensor in that control zone. Each of the five shelf rack aisles are zoned separately (Zones 6-10) using a power pack each and the detection range is extended by connecting a primary and secondary sensor. Included masking shields are installed on the shelf aisle sensors sides facing the traffic aisles so that the sensors do no detect motion unless a person or vehicle actually enters the shelf aisle.

Different variations can be made to this design to suit specific needs. Dimming power packs and MINI sensors can be used in the aisles to allow the lighting to remain on at a low level instead of completely off if there are safety concerns and enable day-light harvesting. Fixtures with integral MINI sensors can be used instead of externally wired power packs and sensors to provide even more granular control and simplify installation.

The above example is of an office space containing a mix of private offices, open areas with cubicles, and a conference room. The reception and open cubicle areas are divided into three control zones. The reception area (Zone 1) uses a single power pack to switch the lighting and the detection range is extended by connecting one MINI primary sensor and one MINI secondary sensors. The traffic aisles and center cubicle area are divided into a second zone (Zone 2) using a single power pack, and the detection range is extended by connecting a primary and two secondary sensors. The sensors are placed where they will detect minor motion in each of the cubicles. Included masking shields are installed on the primary sensor facing the third control zone so it will not detect motion when someone is in that area. The back cubic area (Zone 3) is designed similarly to Zone 2 only using a primary and secondary sensors connected to a single power pack. Each of the private offices (Zones 5-11) use a single power pack and primary sensor to provide individually zoned occupancy sensing, as well as daylight harvesting control if the offices have windows. A low voltage momentary contact switch is wired to the power pack to provide a wall switch override. Where code requires a vacancy sensor in private offices this mode is selected via a switch on the power pack. The PP-A power pack has an auxiliary relay to signal a change in occupancy to HVAC and BMS systems. The conference room (Zone 4) adds a secondary sensor to extend minor motion detection range.

Different variations can be made to this design to suit specific needs. Dimming power packs and MINI sensors can be used for daylight harvesting, to allow the lighting to remain on at a low level instead of completely off, and to provide full range dimming via low voltage switch in private offices and conference rooms. Fixtures with integral MINI sensors can be used instead of externally wired power packs and sensors to provide even more granular control and simplify installation.

MINI – One Size Fits All

The above example is a conference room containing a suspended direct/indirect fixture over the conference table and recessed wall wash downlights along the perimeter. The front wall has a projection screen and the side wall has a window.

The conference room is broken up into three zones. Zone 1 is the suspended fixture over the table, Zone 2 consists of the wall washers in front and along the inside wall, and Zone 3 consists of the wall washers along the outside wall. PP-DIM power packs are used with one MINI primary sensor each. A 3-button low voltage momentary contact switch is used to override and dim each zone. The photosensor in Zone 3 will dim the fixtures along the window to satisfy daylighting code requirements. The photosensors in Zone 1 & 2 will also dim the lights in response to ambient light but less since they are further in from the window.

Variations to this design approach could be to use switching PP-A or PP-1 power packs if no dimming is desired, or if daylight harvesting is not a requirement. Another zone could be added to separate control of the front wall washers in front of the projector screen. The pendant fixture over the table could also be ordered with an integral MINI sensor.

MINI – One Size Fits All

The above example is of an L-shaped corridor with LED downlights spaced at 4’ centers at an 8’ mounting height. The corridor is split into two zones. PP-A power packs are used, with Zone 1 utilizing a primary and two secondary MINI sensors to extend the detection range down the long hall, and a single primary MINI that can cover the short leg in Zone 2. Since passive infrared (PIR) sensors require line of sight to detect motion, the MINI sensors must be placed where they can see down each leg of the corridor as someone approaches. The sensors are spaced within the “walking toward” coverage range in each direction. The PP-A power pack has an auxiliary relay to signal a change in occupancy to HVAC and BMS systems.

A variation to this design is to use PP-DIM dimming power packs. The will allow the lighting to remain on at a low level instead of completely off for emergency egress and/or provide daylight harvesting to satisfy energy codes if the corridor has windows or skylights.

The above example is of a public restroom with LED downlights and indirect cove lighting at an 8’ mounting height. Certain fixtures remain on 24 hours on the emergency circuit per building code so only one control zone is necessary. PP-A or PP-1 power packs are used with a primary and two secondary MINI sensors to extend the detection range over the toilet stalls. Since passive infrared (PIR) sensors require line of sight to detect motion, the MINI sensors must be placed above the toilet stalls where they can see minor motion. The sensors are spaced within the “seated activity” coverage range in each direction. The PP-A power pack has an auxiliary relay to signal a change in occupancy to HVAC and BMS systems.

A variation to this design is to use PP-DIM dimming power packs. The will provide daylight harvesting control to satisfy energy codes if the restroom has windows or skylights.

The above example is of a school gymnasium. Each LED high bay fixture is mounted 30’ above the finished floor and has an integral internal PP-DIM power pack with the MINI GH sensor mounted on the exterior using the OEM fixture bracket. The fixtures are spaced 16’ x 16’. The power pack has an auxiliary relay to signal a change in occupancy to HVAC and BMS systems. This solution will provide occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting at a granular level as skylights and windows on two sides are contributing a substantial amount of ambient light during the daytime hours. Installation is also simplified since the controls are prewired in the fixtures from the factory.
