There has been a lot of incidents occurred involving methanol. As stated earlier, methanol is classified as a flammable material to environment. Thus extra safety is needed to compensate the level of hazard in flammable. Some of the past incident which related to methanol process will be the guide throughout this project.A case study which occurred on June 26th 1991, an explosion and fire occurred during its shutdown. During the working process, specifically at methanol rectifying column of the plant in the Chiba factory of Lion Co., Ltd. In Ichihara manufacturing surfactant. The main cause for this explosion and fire was because of the slight formation of methyl hydroperoxide (MHP). But after that in neutralization process it decreased in amount therefore cause disturbances in pH sensor, in which MHP cannot decompose of decrease easily was generated. Therefore, the recovered methanol that consists of MHP, was fed to the column hence accident occurred.Due to this explosion, 2 employees were killed and 13 employees wounded. As for physical damage, methanol rectifying column in which the accident occurred was destroyed, 319 spots in the factory were damaged by the blast and fragments scattered by the explosion. This explains on how dangerous is the methanol plant could be on the surrounding. (Arai.M et al. 1991).On the other hand, accident from City of Daytona Beach, Florida happen in Bethune Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant required addition of methanol to process the wastewater. The cause of this accident happen specifically at the methanol storage tank accidentally cause by worker that using cutting torch which cause the methanol to ignite. The flame flashed back into storage tank thus causing explosion in the storage tank.Conclusion we can say that, processing methanol require tedious work and care as it is very flammable material. Moreover in Malaysia, with hot conditions which will easily trigger the methanol ignition.
