AbstractThe following resources come from the 2009/10 BSc (Hons) in Multimedia Technology (course number 2ELE0075) from the University of Hertfordshire. All the mini projects are designed as level two modules of the undergraduate programmes.
The objectives of this module are to demonstrate abilities to:
• To plan, generate, source, evaluate, refine, manipulate, edit and present audio / video content• Apply creative digital project development methodology • Create and manipulate a range of media types such as animation, stills, clip art, drawn art, video and audio content using
optimum software technologies• Identify and utilise correct communication and presentation methodology• Design and produce a short story to be delivered over the internet using multimedia applications• Effectively respond to a brief

Refusal of the call
• the reluctant hero• Hero scared/ uncaring. Something more unusual needs
to happen to propel the hero over this impasse. • More offences against the ‘natural order’ or mentor
intervenes.• Luke refuses Obi Wan’s call to adventure. His uncle is
murdered so Luke is now committed.

• Merlin. • The old boxing coach in Rocky• The old sea captain in Jaws• The good witch in Oz = red slippers.

Crossing the 1st Threshold
• Hero enters Special World for 1st time• The balloon goes up, • Wagons roll, • Ship sails, • Job accepted. • Date accepted• Mission impossible.

• Movies often built in three acts
1. Hero’s decision to act
2. the hero’s action itself
3. the consequences of the hero’s action• The 1st threshold marks the turning point between
acts one and two.• Committed to action, there is no turning back.• Dorothy sets out on the yellow brick road.

Tests, allies & enemies
• Saloons and seedy bars. • Spaceport in Star Wars. New rules about the special
world can be learned here. Han Solo introduced and Jabba the Hutt. Obi wan is revealed as a great warrior.
• Doesn’t have to be in a bar, Dorothy meets hers on the road.

Approach to the inmost cave
• The edge of a dangerous place. Often underground – 007. Blofeld and his Cat. HQ of the greatest enemy. Most dangerous spot in Special world – the Inmost Cave.
• When hero enters he crosses 2nd threshold.• Outwitting the enemy’s guards – threshold guardians.• Star Wars – Luke & co sucked into the ‘cave’ of the
Death Star.• Dorothy kidnapped by Wicked Witch. • Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom.• Preparing to confront death or supreme danger.

Supreme ordeal
• Hero hits bottom. Brink of ‘death’. • “I expect you to die, Mr Bond” says Goldfinger• Star Wars – Luke etc in giant rubbish squasher. The
Tentacled monster, is Luke dead?• ET dies on the operating table.• The roller coaster and its fear. • Extreme sports. More alive after facing death close up.• Hero is reborn .

Reward – seizing the sword
• Hero possesses treasure/elixir that they sought. • Their reward. • Luke steals the Plans to the Death Star.• Better understanding.

The Road Back – Act three
• Consequences. • Enemy comes raging after them.• Hero pursued on the road back. • Literally a chase scene usually here.• ET’s moonlight bike ride.

Resurrection
• One last ordeal of death and resurrection. Goldfinger on the plane.
• Final exam for hero – have they really changed. – Old girlfriend appears and offers one last chance.

Return with the elixir
• Hero returns and must have some potion, elixir, ‘quest for fire’.
• Can simply be knowledge. • “There’s no place like home” understands Dorothy.
