and exploration of the stories behind Scotch, Bourbon,

whiskey bars in America on a journey through (some
of) the world of whiskeys. We will sample five to six
different styles from the Isles to North America. Come

Rum – The Spirit of the Times Rum has a deep rooted history, both in the Caribbean
and the US. From culture to food it has left its imprint
and continues to do so today. Here is an opportunity
to take a historical and sensory journey, learning more
about this great beverage that has been a major part of
the development and growth of this region of the world.
We will sample varieties of Rum, some ethnic foods and
even the music associated with this great drink. Proof of

Alfred is a longtime transplant from the Caribbean to
the state of Wisconsin. Growing up on the island of
Trinidad, rum has been part of his blood and history.

The Wednesday Wine Series Join us in the Prairie Fire Winebar at Union South as
we sample and learn the stories of a variety of wines.
We will tour the wine landscape, sample a variety of

The Basics of Drawing Creating images begins with the capacity to observe
what is right in front of you. The standard basic teaching
tools in any academic drawing class are an ebony pencil,
a kneaded eraser and a nice big page to sketch on. It
is truly surprising how many endless hours of discovery
can start with taking a class like this. Get inspired,
take in pointers from a seasoned artist and learn from
other students like yourself. Get your hand warmed up
for a lifestyle of visual exploration. You will create line
variations, spatial depth, volume, composition, texture,

art that uses the philosophy and patterns of Zentangle®
but is bigger or smaller, more colorful, and can include
representational images. You can go wherever your
imagination takes you. We will use a variety of papers,
art boards and mark making tools to learn how to bring
color, texture and depth to your work and create unique
pieces of art. Prerequisite: Zentangle® Basics. Bring

all other supplies but you are encouraged to bring
additional coloring supplies so you can bring out your
inner Da Vinci.

The Art of Henna Henna has been used in the eastern Mediterranean to
adorn the human body as part of social and holiday
celebrations since the late Bronze Age. Markings
consistent with Henna have been found on the statuettes
of young women dating between 1500 and 500 BC.
Using this organic plant based dye you will learn how to
use henna to create beautiful, temporary tattoo patterns.
We will go through a step-by-step process for making
your own henna paste and creating designs. All materials
supplied. No prior experience needed for this hands-on

weekend of exciting geology. View the landscape
from the descendant of a Precambrian mountain. Feel the
spray of spectacular waterfalls tumbling over ancient
volcanic ridges and fault escarpments. Hike along the
beautiful gorges carved by eons of water rushing over
some of the oldest rocks exposed at the earth’s surface.
Trip involves hiking of moderate difficulty. Course fee
includes park entrance fees, transportation, and lodging

Astronomy Afield Celebrate spring with an incredible planetary
show that stars Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Mercury
and the moon! Understand the apparent motion
of celestial bodies, then apply your understanding
in dark sky observing sessions. You will learn to
use a planisphere to find your way around the
heavens and make a lunar flip book, your own handy
reference to the lunar cycle. In the dark skies west
of Madison, you will learn to “star hop” and use a
telescope with a 10-inch mirror. Includes classroom
sessions, guided field observing, and hands-on
training in the use of a finder and telescope. Car
pooling to observing sessions (held after each
classroom session) discussed in class. No class

Start with a visit to historic Yerkes Observatory, a
University of Chicago facility in Williams Bay,
Wisconsin, and the birthplace of modern astrophysics.
Yerkes houses the largest functioning refracting
telescope in the world and interesting museum
exhibits in an architecturally fascinating building,
ornate with celestial and other motifs. Continue your
astronomical tour at our country’s first planetarium—
the Adler Planetarium on Chicago’s lakefront. The
Adler features a museum with excellent exhibits about
astronomy and space exploration. Time for a show in
one of the three museum theaters and dinner at one of
Chicago’s premier, yet affordable, restaurants. Course
fee includes transportation and entrance fees.

! Hwy 69 Pub Crawl Wisconsin State Highway 69, as is winds south of
Verona, includes a fine collection of historic
Wisconsin pubs. Join us as we explore this resource and
see how these gathering places fit into the history of
southern Wisconsin. We will drive to Monroe and work
our way back towards Madison. In Monroe we will start
with a Minhas Brewery tour (includes unlimited tasting
and your take-away “six-pack”) and see the finest
collection of breweryana in the world. We will include
Baumgartner’s, where you can test your resolve to enjoy
a liver sausage and onion or limburger sandwich. We
will then make additional stops, including Puempel’s
Olde Tavern in New Glarus, with its original cherrywood
bar, folk murals and curious ceiling decoration. Course
fee includes transportation and brewery tour fee,
responsible for own food and beverage expenses.
INSTRUCTOR: Kim Tschudy, a native of New Glarus, has
been active in historic preservation for years. He has
published six historic books.

! Walden West: WI Authors & A Sense of Place Borrowing the title from what many consider
some of August Derleth’s best writing, we will embark
on a Wisconsin Authors road trip. Join us as we explore
the places that greatly impacted three of Wisconsin’s
great authors – their Thoreau’s Walden – August
Derleth, Aldo Leopold and John Muir. Each had much
broader influence than Wisconsin, but where molded
by the Wisconsin environment, greatly influencing each
one’s life work. With stops in “Sac Prairie”, the Shack,
Fountain Lake and more, we hope to get a truer sense
of the places and spaces that inspired these three
Wisconsin leaders. Course fee includes transportation.

will learn new techniques to dye silk fabric. Each person
will create 2 scarves in this class. They make great gifts!

Rag Rug Making Learn how to make the classic rag rug. Whether starting
your cottage business or just looking for the enjoyment of
fabric upcyling and crafting, learn the steps in rug creation.
Come ready to work the first session, you will craft a rag rug

bring to first class. Homework not required, but may be

watercolor paper and fabric for the most beautiful and
magical transfers. You can make them into note cards, book
marks or framed art by using the original art or making
color copies. You can also scan the art and use transfers
for permanent art onto clothing, hats, drapes, quilts or
whatever you can dream up. These make great gifts. No

Intro to Lapidary Lapidary is the art of cutting, polishing or engraving
stones. See how you can take a rough rock such as an
agate or jasper and turn it into a work of art suitable for
incorporating into jewelry. Designed for the beginner and
a great complement to jewelry making. Learn safety and
the basic skill techniques to saw, grind, sand, and polish
many different types of rock into cabochons. A cabochon
is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished
as opposed to faceted. The resulting form is usually a
convex top with a flat bottom. Successful completion of
the course results in certification to utilize the lab during
