COFFEEWORKS was born out of founder Roselle Paras’ own

love for hanging out in coffeeshops while working as a reporter and segment producer at network giant ABSCBN.

As a way of coping with the de-mands of the job, and as a way to relax, Roselle was always a regular fixture at coffeeshops in Manila.

Seeing the many coffeeshops thriving in the metro, she realized that there was room to introduce a modern, and cozy coffeeshop in her own hometown: Cagayan de Oro.

Thus on August 2005, Roselle opened Coffeeworks at Rosario Ar-cade, Limketkai Center: the premier center of business and commerce in

Cagayan de Oro.Aside from serving freshly roasted

coffee at affordable prices, Cof-feeworks was the first in the city to offer free wireless internet access to its clients.

This proved to be a very great idea as the shop’s clients grew to include, not only the students and families, but also sales people, businessmen, medical representatives and the like. These were people who found the convenience of having to “do office work” at a place where they could relax and take their time.

Proof of Coffeeworks’ success is the expansion of the coffeeshop in December 2007 from 60 sqm to 100 sqm. Roselle was also able to recoup her investment in less than two years.

Coffeeworks was also awarded a space at the pioneering Sm North Skygarden in Manila in May 2009. This became the 2nd branch.

It wasn’t long before franchising inquiries started pouring in. On October 2010, the first franchised branch opened in Highway 30 Iligan City. A few months later, the second franchised branch opened in Xavier University Gym, Cagayan de Oro.

PANTUKAN, Compostela Valley––Hundreds of com-muters were stranded and ve-hicles plying the Davao-Mati Highway stopped for over five hours Thursday when thousands of small-scale miners occupied a bridge in Pantukan.

Vehicular traffic returned to normal following assur-ances by local authorities they would not be displaced from their areas of livelihood.

Juland Suazo, of the envi-ronment group Panalipdan (defenders), revealed the small-scale miners were an-gered by moves of barangay officials allowing big mining companies to operate the sites including those already declared as “Minahan ng Bayan.”

The miners are opposing the entry of mining firms Na-tionwide Development Corp. (Nadecor), Russel Mines and St. Augustine Copper and Gold.

The miners feared they will be displaced once these

mining firms operate in the area.

They urged barangay of-ficials and local government officials to junk barangay resolutions endorsing the mining companies.

The small-scale miners joined by other groups and farmers from other areas started their protest by oc-cupying the vicinity of the municipal hall in Pantukan Wednesday.

When local officials ig-nored their protest, they decided to seize the bridge Thursday to show their anger.

Passenger buses and jeepneys and other vehicles piled up along the highway as miners on the bridge grew in numbers.

Represented by CEEDO in-charge and CDRRMC Ex-ecutive Offi cer Bebot Decena, CLGOO Edward Bhagwani, Public Service Department Head Engr. Arturo Villar and City Administrator Ariceo Casing Jr. with DRRMC Operation Chief Tommy Bualat and Mrs. Chenchen Boncayao of the Offi ce of the City Mayor welcomed the visitors and shared the good practices of Oroqui-eta especially on the imple-mentation of Republic Act 10121, otherwise known as

the Disaster Risk Reduction Law of 2010.

Oroquieta City, during the wrath of Typhoon Send-ong six months ago that badly hit the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, suff ered less.

Even some of its urban barangays were underwater due to heavy rains, but with the eff ective management of the CDRRMC prior to the landfall of Sendong, Oro-quietanons were already prepared.

Th is good practice was shared by the mayor’s men to the visiting officials of Manibay, Negros Oriental.

For his part, Manibay Municipal Mayor Erne T. Uy thanked the mayor’s men for sharing their expertise and told Mindanao Daily News that what they have learned in their short visit will defi nitely be re-echoed to Manibay. Mayor Uy is not a stranger to Oroquieta as his father has served Oroquietanons in his younger days as a doctor of medicine practicing in the old Oroquieta town.

Meanwhile, Rep. George Arnaiz, who is a Visayan speaking representative of the Negrense, also told this paper that what they expect in the study tour is a learning that they can bring back to Negros Oriental especially the municipality of Manibay were he represents in the halls of Congress.

Manibay town has 33 barangays and seat in the mountainous area of Negros Oriental and also suff ered from the latest earthquake that hit the Island of Negros two months ago.

MALAYBALAY City––Armed with an arrest warrant, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Bukidnon arrested a member of the notorious Batis-til group blamed resposible for the series of robberies victimizing motorists––and other high-profile crimes in the province.

Chief Insp. Joie Pacito Yape Jr., the newly-installed CIDG provincial officer, identified the alleged member of Batistil group as Dionisio Daulong, aka “Junjun.”

Daulong, said Yape, was arrested based on the arrest warrant issued by Judge Dennis Alcantar of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 08.

Authorities have confiscated from Daulong’s posses-sion a .45 pistol loaded with magazine and ammunitions, one fragmentation grenade, and a blonde wig.

Police said the Batistil group was responsible for the series of robbery hold-up, carnapping, cattle rustling, and gun-for-hire.

Yape, who merely assumed as CIDG provincial of-ficer in February this yeat, led the arrest of suspected drug personalities, illegal logging, murder, carnapper, and robbers, and hold-uppers.

Earlier, the CIDG and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) in Bukidnon arrested Leonardo Rubin based on an arrest warrant. Rubin, who is facing carnapping case before the local court, yielded drugs and drug parapher-nalias durign his arrest.

CAGAYAN de Oro City––The peace and development civil society group Balay Mind-anaw Group of NGOs recently launched the newest and youngest member of BMG — the Global Mindanaw Polytechnic, Inc. (GMP) — in an effort to put flesh to its development programs for the grassroots of Mindanao.

Formally launched last week on the 16th anniver-sary of BMG, the GMP is a TESDA-accredited and SEC-registered vocational technical school that was specifically established to help in the fulfillment of the vision of BMG.

Ariel Hernandez, senior director of Balay Mindanaw Group, said that the concep-tualization of the GMP began four years ago.

“The seed for this venture began to germinate four years ago as we tried to find other

Fabeventures that we think will contribute to the fulfillment of the vision of Balay,” he said.

Hernandez, also the ex-ecutive director of the Ka-tilingbanong Pamahandi sa Mindanaw Foundation, Inc. (KPMFI) that has been a member of the BMG for six years now, said that GMP is the fruit of years of trying

to find ways to help solve the problem of poverty in the rural agricultural areas of Misamis Oriental and elsewhere.

“Balay is very close to the rural community … and through the years we have been trying to find ways to help farmers find other sources of income…. Ag-

ricultural investment will always be there. But the farm-ers having other sources of income, this will help solve poverty,” he stressed.

GMP, to be administered by Fleurabelle “Flong” Torres, will provide farmers and their children viable skills that they can exploit to augment their income from the land, he explained.

Hernandez explained that GMP was established to (1) provide technical vocational education and training pro-grams, especially to poor ru-ral households in Mindanao; (2) take the lead in providing globally competitive, excel-lent and tradable skillful Filipino workers with passion for socio-economic develop-ment such as alleviating pov-erty and building peace; (3) provide the highest possible quality of professionalism in education and training that is market-driven, relevant to industry needs and at par with national and international

standards; (4) be sought on its expertise in innovative community-based technol-ogy and entrepreneurship development by those who demand the highest caliber of human resources and by those potential entrepreneurs, hence, it is the Center for Mindanao Technopreneur-ship; and (5) partner with like-minded and like-hearted institutions, especially with technical vocation and finan-cial institutions coming from public and private sectors to ensure the viability and sustainability of its programs and projects.

“I hope that GMP will not just provide them with skills but through it they will be able to use these skills for livelihood and entrepreneur-ship,” said GMP Board Mem-ber Irene Floro, president and CEO of the Skills Mastery Institute (SMI).

Floro, who helped BMG establish GMP, also said that the GMP “will help BMG

attain its vision, mission and goals for Mindanao, the Philippines and the World.”

Teddy Sabuga-a, Provin-cial Peace and Order Council executive director, expressed hope that through the GMP, BMG will attain more heights in its “fight” to achieve genu-ine peace for Mindanao, the Philippines and the World.

He said that the provin-cial government of Misamis Oriental is ready and willing to help BMG attain its VMG through GMP by providing scholarships to deserving students.

Sabuga-a said that the GMP is a great complement to the BMG’s peace efforts in the countrysides of Mindanao, as he noted that insurgency is the fruit of many factors, particularly inequities and lack of resources.

At present, GMP is of-fering courses on massage therapy, housekeeping, household services, and food and beverage. (Bong D. Fabe)

THINK a minute.Did you have to compete

with someone else to get the girl or guy you wanted?

Whether we like it or not, competition is part of life.

Usually there are other people besides you who want that job, scholarship, business, or title. But some people will stop at nothing to win.

Whether i t’s ly ing , cheating, or gossiping and destroying someone’s reputation.

Yet when we compete only to win and beat the other person, it not only makes us bad losers, but also bad winners.

That kind of competing produces a person with a bad heart and character, with self-centered greed, pride, and envy.

An important lesson in

The real competition

life is to learn to compete only against yourself.

Then, whether you win or lose against others, you still win!

Because all the time and effort you spent to work and improve only makes you a better person who’s closer to reaching your potential.

As one guy put it : “Trespassing is okay, if the boundaries you cross are your own!”

So when we set good, important goals for our-

selves, they work in two ways: we work on them, and they work on us.

The real test of your success is whether you’re a better person than you were yesterday?

Are your attitudes and character better?

Are you a better husband or wife?

A better father or moth-er?

A better worker? You know, we can com-

pete and win in our career and making money, but if

we lose our good charac-ter by being dishonest or hurting and using others, then we’ve lost the real competition and what’s important.

The real measure of success is not what you HAVE, but what you ARE as a person.

What kind of heart and character do you have? What kind of relationships do you have with other people?

If you’ve allowed your-self to compete against others and you’ve done dishonest things or hurt people.

Why not ask Jesus to forgive you today and start changing your heart and way of living?

Then you can learn to compete only against your-self and win every time!

Just Think a Minute.

Conferences and research awardsAS the world of education has changed so fast, Higher Edu-cation Institutions (HEIs) have been involved in some conferences or seminars. This practice is intended to make them both recognized and knowledgeable. Being recognized is also important for the HEIs world wide because it can make them appreciated by public.

More over, being rec-ognized, especially by the public worldwide, can make the HEIs get their reputation.

In addition, HEIs also need to be knowledgeable. In this sense, the HEIs need to exchange their ideas and share their experiences with other HEIs through out the world. By doing so, among the HEIs there is a mutual benefit. As such, disseminating the results of the research and showing their bets practices in their environment can be done.

In the long run, the HEIs can be knowledgeable one another. From this effort, the world will no longer be separable in the sense that there will no be any nation among them that is left behind by the majority. This is one of the examples of making the world flat and

balanced. That is the way how to make the nature and universe stable.

Today, it has been the fact that international confer-ences are often held by some universities by inviting other universities worldwide to participate. The conference is always identified by the attendants and presenters of the research results based on their own fields of sciences. Among the participants, there are papers related to the research with different topics. These topics are unique and therefore, among the participants themselves they can exchange their knowledge and share their experi-ences. This is the example of the indicators showing that they have become knowledgeable among themselves.

Exactly on May 28-30, 2012, IAMURE (International Association of Multidisciplinary Research) is going to hold an international conference, named ACE confer-ence. ACE stands for Asian Conference on Education.

This event is going to be held by the IAMURE. This intellectual consortium was initially established in Cagayan de Oro city, Philippines last year: 2011. It was the first conference held in Cagayan de Oro city, Philippines, identified by the success. All participants were registered as the members, led by the president, Dr. Genaro V. Japos, from de Cagayan University, Philippines.

There are various activities conducted by this inter-national organization. Last year, too, I was invited to lead the training of journal publication, dealing with

FILIPINO-Americans who visited the Philippines re-cently recalled the exceeding heat of the sun that drove them to stay inside air con-ditioned rooms for nearly 24 hours a day.

“It was unbearable,” a balikbayan from New York City said upon arrival. He revealed he wanted to stay for a good vacation at least two months for the month of April and May but he evacuated back to New York because of the rare atmo-sphere.

Another Balikbayan from the West Coast also said he has to cut short his vacation with his family be-cause the hot environment was just too much and they could hardly stand with it.

They have been in the U.S. for more than twenty years and surely have ad-

opted the cool weather in the country.

“We were sweating even early in the morning and we had difficulty going to sleep,” he said. They expressed concern they might get sick because of the sudden change of temperature.

A university female teacher who spent three weeks in Mindanao pointed out that he enjoyed her stay because she saw her children and grandchildren but did not enjoy going out for some reasons because

she cannot just stand the terrible weather.

She intended to spend a longer vacation for more than month but had re-turned to her place in Cali-fornia. She said the country has always been hot but it seems this year was exces-sively hot.

According to reports, many Filipinos who can afford, went to Hongkong and other Asian countries to escape from the heat. The sun goes up everyday and showers the earth with so

much biting sunlight that is extraordinarily irresist-ible. Those who have funds even came to America and Canada to enjoy the cool environment of the winter weeks.

Another balikbayan from Los Angeles, California, said he visited his hometown in Bohol and for same reason he cut short his vacation because he could hardly sleep on account of the high temperature. I was not able to see all my relatives and friends because I returned to my place in California in a shorter time. He en-joyed, though, the windy beaches in his province and the food that he missed so much. He stressed the hot weather was not normal. It was much hotter compared to the old weather behavior

QINHUANGAO, China––Bosom friends Josie Gabuco and Alice Kate Aparri of the PLDT-ABAP National Boxing Team parted ways Wednesday as they came up with contrasting results in their respective quarterfinals bouts in the AIBA World Women’s Championships here.

Gabuco defeated Canadian Kim Klavel decisively, 21-15 to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament held at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in this city 300 kilometers northeast of Beijing.

The world championships drew 305 women boxers from 70 countries worldwide.

Aparri, on the other hand, figured in a tight battle with Terry Gordini of Italy with scores of 2-3 in the first for the Italian, 5-5 in the second, 7-7 in the third and 10-10 in the fourth and final round.

In round 4, two judges went for Aparri, another 2 for Gordini and one saw it even.

The deadlock was decided by countback based on the computer scoring system and the decision went to Gordini.

Gabuco, on the other hand, clearly dominated Klavel of Montreal, although the Canadian was able to sneak in some licks of her own as well.

“She is a strong boxer,” said Gabuco. “But I timed my punches well and I even opened up a cut under her left eye with my right straight just before the bell sounded to end the second round. I really want to win here,” exclaimed the comely 25 year-old veteran boxer from Palawan. Round by round scores were 5-3, 10-7, 16-10 before the final 21-15 count.

Gabuco faces a formidable foe in Svetlana Gnevanova of Russia in the semifinals on Friday. The Russian girl is a gold medalist in the World Cup of Petroleum held in her country late last year. Thursday is a rest day.

Gnevanova bought a ticket to the semis via a close quarterfinals decision over Pinki Jangra of India, 13-11.

WORLD No. 2 tennis player Maria Sharapova’s star has risen even further over the past year to make her the world’s 71st most powerful celebrity, Forbes magazine said Thursday.

Sharapova climbed nine places to her new spot in the annual ranking of 100 film stars, musicians and TV personalities, which was topped by actress and

Sharapova among global elite: Forbessinger Jennifer Lopez.

Sharapova, 25, remains the only Russian on the list and holds onto her posi-tion as the most power-ful female tennis players, despite Serena Williams gaining seven places to take the 77th spot.

With earnings of US$ 13 million, Williams could not compete with her Russian rival, who earned twice as

much, Forbes said. The world of sport is still

ruled by 36-year-old golf star Tiger Woods, although he dropped six places to 12th, in part because his earnings fell by US$ 17 million.

Woods is followed by two basketball players, NBA MVP LeBron James of the Miami Heat in 15th and LA Lakers shooting guard

Kobe Bryant in 27th, before Roger Federer becomes the most powerful tennis player at 31st.

In football, England player David Beckham is the most powerful player in the 32nd spot, while Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, ranked 44th, beats his Barcelona rival Lionel Messi, six places below him.philippine news agency
