The Brain
We all have a brain. It is on a simplistic level the grey matter between your ears.
On a grander scale it is the grey matter between your ears that keeps your body
functioning, from all of the body’s functions, such as walking, talking, swallowing,
breathing, taste, smell, heart rate and so on, to controlling all of our thinking
functions, our emotions, how we behave and all our intellectual (cognitive)
activities, such as how we attend to things, how we perceive and understand our
world and its physical surroundings, how we learn and remember and so on.
The brain is a truly amazing piece of architecture when you think about it- and if
you ever see one outside of the human body it is a crazy looking mass of soft,
wrinkly, spongy tissue. You would never know that it is one of the major control
center of the body any more than looking at a heart muscle would give you
indication of the other operations that it has on the level of reaching out to others
and the chemical production, or even your intestines and the neuron production
there that sends signals back to the brain with information of how to take on the
world around you.
Subconscious and Conscious mind
When talking about the brain the subject of the subconscious and conscious mind
may come up. What are they? Where are they? What do they do?
There are 2 trains of thought concerning these two bodies of the mind.
The first is that they don’t exist, the second is that they do we just don’t know
where they are located.
The "subconscious mind" may not exist the way we think it does, but
subconscious brain activity is real.
Sigmund Freud gave the mind personality and drama by creating powerful
narratives Freud constructed ideas of hidden battles that rage between the ego,
id, and superego, and made our minds seem like they had separate beings in
operation.
While Freud's internal drama of the mind is no longer taken seriously in the field
of psychology research, it continues to frame in deep ways how people
understand literature, metaphor, and mythic archetypes. The drama of the
subconscious continues to be used productively in Psychology offices and with
mind/body workers across the world.
But does anything like the subconscious mind actually exist?
Is there a hidden demon in the cellar (or the attic) of the mind, secretly trying to
undermine our life goals in order to achieve its own devious and mischievous
desires?
Maybe, maybe not.
Neuroscience and subconscious Processing
Subconscious activity as a component of mental activity is a real phenomenon
and is responsible for much of our behavior -- perhaps most of it. But how should
we think about this "subconscious activity"?
The modern view in neuroscience From Bruce Lipton and Doctors like him is that
the activity of the brain is in some ways like an iceberg. The small portion of
activity that is available for awareness and introspection is like the tip of that
iceberg.
The "conscious mind" as like the visible tip of an iceberg.
What, then, is going on in the "unconscious" or subconscious part?
The brain is processing an immense amount of information, but only a portion of
that information is widely shared across the brain's neural networks at any given
moment.
It's like a room full of people having conversations, but only one person gets to
take the microphone at a time to be heard by everyone. But there are many more
conversations going on that are not heard around the room. These conversations
are what could be called the subconscious. The quiet table side conversations that
happen while the speaker is speaking.
The subconscious refers to everything going on that is not conscious.
It is this background conversation that gives the appearance of a separation of the
mind.
Certain information is kept out of one's personal narrative ("repressed desires,
beliefs or memories"?), and appears only indirectly in conscious experience when
a situation or event bring the background conversation into the conscious mind.
It may only give up what feels like outcomes on the level of consciousness and
surface as repeating patterns or thoughts that one may not understand why they
are there.
If giving the patterns a name, like "the subconscious" is a helpful way of managing
them or bringing them into awareness, then what is the harm?
While the idea of there being an actual place in the brain called the subconscious
or whether it is just an idea we can use to be able to communicate what is going
on easier it is a concept that you hear periodically and I use in my work.
So from top of the ice berg to the part under the water, the awareness that is the
conscious mind, and the table side chatter that isn’t heard or paid attention to.
Conscious mind = aware
Subconscious Mind = below the level of awareness
Neuroplasticity and pathways
Neuroplasticity is an umbrella term referring to the ability of your brain to
reorganize or restructure itself, both physically and functionally, throughout your
life due to your environment, behavior, thinking, and emotions. Neuro meaning
Brain cells, and plasticity meaning malleable or moldable.
The old thought was that the adult brain was pretty much a physiologically static
organ and hard-wired after critical developmental periods in childhood, basically
you were left with what you grew up in. While it’s true that your brain is much
more plastic during the early years and capacity declines with age, plasticity
actually happens all throughout your life, and the more its is utilized the mor
malleable it is.
You see this all of the time with people who seem super human and come against
all odds and make it to the big time, it’s that kid that grew up in a house of horror
and craziness and yet emerged into this amazing caring person. He had to kick
and fight and struggle his way out but the human before you is nor where a
representation of what his early life was trying to make him. Why? Somewhere
along the way he made a decision to not listen to the thoughts or follow the paths
in his head. He made choices that went against the grain of what he was taught.
And changed what could have been an otherwise rocky outcome and hard life.
All your memories (of events, words, images, emotions, and even beliefs)
correspond to the particular activity of certain networks of neurons in your brain
that have strengthened connections with one another. Every time you think a
thought you strengthen those connections. The neurons that fire together wire
together, meaning every time you go to the thought the neuron fires. If you
repeat the pattern often the firing happens faster. This is what creates the
automatic reaction and why repetitive practice make a task easier. You are
literally creating a groove/pathway/ or loop to the thing you are doing.
This seems to be the case with negative thinking or positive. If I am playing
movies in my head of the fight I had with my mother and the anger that came
from it, over and over the neuron are moving closer together, and firing faster,
and my result is an angry life. Whether you are learning and honing a skill or
changing an old belief process. If the neurons are firing rapidly they will keep you
locked into the pattern.
When learning a sport as a young person and the repeated movement become
like second nature you have brought those firing synapses so close and the firing
happens so quickly the nature of the movement has become a part of that
person. Think about Tiger wood in his younger years.
PLASTICITY IN NEURAL PATHWAYS
Every time you learn something, neural circuits are altered in your brain. A bond is
created with a protein and a neuron that becomes neuroplasticity and grooved
into a pathway- These circuits communicate with one another through special
junctions called synapses.
When you learn something, it is actually these synapses whose efficiency
increases, thus facilitating the passage of nerve impulses along a particular circuit
or pathway. The more the pathway is used the stronger it becomes.
There is a train of thought that says you can actually “break” apart unused or
unwanted neuroplasticity, this may not be fully correct. Do you break it apart or
are you overwriting the pathways? The other train of thought is that you are
overwriting the pathways. Either way the more you practice the thing the more
you strengthen the pathway.
The less you practice a movement, thought, or a belief, the synapses actually fires
less and the space between the neurons get wider.
As the firing of the neurons becomes less, then the thoughts won’t be as
pervasive, they won’t be as strong. The belief begins to change. The stronghold
breaks free.
The traps of the mind are as much as the quickened response of the neurons
firing and your ability to assert your will over the thoughts, the belief, and the
action to change what you don’t like and create what you want.
The neural pathways you travel the most will become very efficient.
Brain Dominance vs. Whole Brain
A great deal of research has been done on what was termed as the Brain
Dominance Theory or split brain research.
The idea was that each hemisphere of the brain specializes in and presides over
different functions, processes different kinds of information, and deals with
different kinds of problems.
When talked about and shown charts people are able to identify themselves as
being one or the other by what they do for a living or by how they generally react
to situations as they come up.
The old thinking that a person was generally either right brained or left brained is
true to an extent. And if you knew which you were we taught it was helpful
because then you could play to your strong suit.
In reality what is has done is give us an excuse to not be optimal in an area if it
doesn’t fall on your so called dominate hemisphere. It gives you excuses and
makes a person lazy.
Brain Dominance theory has definitely not aided us in reaching our highest
potential as humans or living lives that are fully supported by our legitimate
physiology of having a Whole Brain to use and at our disposal.
You have also heard that humans can only utilize or use only 10 % of the brain.
The other 90 % is not something we can use or “access”. This is an urban myth.
This is not true according to Doctor Bruce Lipton- So where did all this miss
information come from? According to Lipton a study of the brain revealed a very
important fact that your brain is made up of 10% Neuron cells. 90% are Glial cells
which were called supporting and connective tissue. In The Neuron Doctrine it
was believed that the neurons cells were the cells that did all the work, they are
the functional cells of the brain and the other 90% the glial cells where just
support.
Lipton goes on to say that by definition then we were lead to believe that if only
10% is neurons that are the functioning cells then that is all we use.
The glial cells, for a long time, were thought to be just the connective supportive
tissue for nutrition and physical support to the neurons.
What we know now is that they do way more- they are way more important in
neural function that just support, they can inhibit or activate neurons, they
connect to neurons and can control the activity of neurons- they are not just
passive cells within the brain they are an integral part of the way the brain works.
Without the glial cells the neurons will not do their job. So knowing this is
powerful, you don’t only have access to 10%, you have access to the whole thing
and the whole thing is vital to your existence.
The good doctor goes on to explain that it doesn’t mean we actually use all of the
brain all of the time, because when you live in patterns or habits- you will use the
neuronal pathways that are form by habituation- or doing the same thing over
and over again. These pathways seem to get a preference in your everyday life-
which are your repeated cycles and patterns and why you fill stuck in areas…
So just like being pigeon holed into the idea that you are either right brained or
left brain, only using 10% of the capacity of the brain can severely limit a person
even just by the theory.
If you have access to and can understand that by having a whole brain and being
in a whole brain state you will lend yourself to a mentality that will allow you to
keep unwanted garbage out of your life and your brain. That the cycles and
patterns you repeat are merely stored in your brain as neuro plasticity and not
really who you are at all. But that you grow up identify with these patterns and
issues like they are part of your personality when in reality they are simply just a
part of the story.
A whole brain state allows for you to explore without fear, understand without
restraint, and care, love, and grow without worrying about what anyone else is or
isn’t doing.
If you are left or right brained centric and so overly creative that you have no
structural controls in your life, is that profitable? If you are so strict and rigid in
rules and logic that you can’t understand the beauty and love around you or
interact in a creative way through it, is that a life?
Such as being Ordered and structured even when being Creative.
Or being emotional with logic included.
Think about how many times you were over board one way or the other, in
regards to different subjects...
Like being totally in a creative mind or so over board with intuition that you lost
focus on what was in front of you, and had no logic or structure to work with.
Or maybe it was with reason, and structure and you couldn’t move ahead
because you needed a little bit of creativity?
Possibilities
A whole brain state- a whole brain society- what a different culture that would be.
An open minded whole being platform to learn , engage, train, move, feel, heal,
and live…
Living out of wholeness instead of struggling for ground and need for things you
never are able to grasp.
A whole brain state allows you the ability to easily rewrite the neuropathways.
Your physical body has the infrastructure already in place to do this. We have just
been taught to live in fear, to not listen to our bodies or our spirt. We question
the wrong things and cause or on physical body to work against us. The question
of what medicine should I take, what doctor do I listen to- we gave away our
ability to reason our own existence and heal our own bodies because of what we
were told a doctor could do. The belief itself that our health is in the control of a
government system that demands insurance and that pharmaceuticals are the
road back to health is absolutely crazy.
Absolute change is the change in the condition of your heart, and also a change in
your physiology which is a change in your brain. Your heart and your brain are
connected and not separable. While your physiology dictates that they serve
different functions in the body- they both have a spiritual connection and
energetic value that keeps them functioning on different levels together.
They each connect us to each other, the world around us and to God, Creator and
to creation.
Your chemical make-up
Utilizing your chemical make-up will play an important role.
The neurotransmitters and chemicals that are secreted in conjunction with good
or bad feelings are a good que for a person to recognize and even utilize.
When learning to feel your body in module 2 of MIND REWIRE, it is these
chemicals that come into play.
The neurotransmitters leave a feeling in your body. When you can tap into this
feeling and recognize the control you do have over the chemicals you are injecting
into your own system by way of a thought or replaying an old memory, or even
the movies and stories you write to help you get understanding of situations in
your life, you can start to change your life, outcomes and new situations – your
perception and attitude all change. In correlation to these neurotransmitters you
are able to utilize you free will to be happy or not- engage in angry and behaviors
that drive you there, or realize that gets you nowhere (most times) and just be
able to relax and find joy! Odd and interesting that it is a choice you make, and
not just your lot in life.
These neurotransmitters are characterized by what they do in your system and
catalogued good and bad- which for our purposes here works but isn’t entirely
true- even the ones under the bad area have good qualities that your body needs
to function and thrive if balanced with the rest. Same with the good- While
oxytocin is thought of as the love neurotransmitter, It makes you feel good it also
can heighten the feeling of cortisol if your or in a state where that is in your
system.
So here is a list and how they interact with your system, how to up them manually
(thinking, interaction, life) or where possible by the food you eat and aligning
yourself with health.
Neurotransmitters
Chemicals of Connection, Pleasure and Calm *In conversation, these chemicals are activated through trust, caring, courage, candor, and appreciation
Dopamine: https://bebrainfit.com/increase-dopamine/
Motivation Molecule
Productivity
Focus
Pleasure -Reward Center “I did it!” Thrill of the chase
Feelings of enjoyment, bliss, euphoria
If you have Too little- You may feel Lethargic, unmotivated, unfocused, depressed
Lack a zest for life
You can boost dopamine by gratitude practice, appreciation, completion of tasks and expressing “yes”, celebrate, exercise, meditation, creative hobbies, listening to music, take on new challenges, be creative, enjoy the quest (the act of seeking and finding), set short and long term goals and celebrate your accomplishments Dopamine Boosting Foods
Dopamine is made from the amino acid tyrosine.
Eating a diet high in tyrosine will ensure you’ve got the basic building blocks needed for
dopamine production.
Here’s a list of foods, drinks, and spices known to increase dopamine:
all clean animal products
almonds
apples
avocado
bananas
beets
chocolate
coffee
fava beans
green leafy vegetables
green tea
lima beans
oatmeal
sea vegetables
sesame and pumpkin seeds
turmeric
watermelon
wheat germ
Foods high in natural probiotics such as yogurt, kefir, and raw sauerkraut can also increase
natural dopamine production.
The health of your intestinal flora impacts your production of neurotransmitters.
Oxytocin: https://bebrainfit.com/oxytocin-love-hormone/
Love Hormone- released when we hug, cuddle, make love
Increases trust and empathy, forms bonds
Strengthens traits such as generosity, trust, altruism, openness and generosity
Strengthens bonds
Down- side: It can intensify bad feelings as well as producing good. It can Intensify fear and mistrust in those not in your social circle
At its worst it fuels prejudice, aggression and xenophobia
Boost oxytocin by: Physical touch, words of encouragement, listening, smiling and laughing, meditating and praying, exercise, cry, give, create, and spend time with animals There are no foods that specifically help bump or release Oxytocin, although eating foods that one thoroughly enjoys is reported to give that bump.
Oxytocin is sold as nasal spray (Syntocinon)
Serotonin: https://bebrainfit.com/serotonin-deficiency/
Happy molecule
In the brain it regulates mood, well-being, social behavior, libido, learning, memory and sleep.
In the gut it regulates appetite and digestion and is just starting to be studied. Low serotonin is depression and the accompanying loss of pleasure and anxiety among a long list of other things
Increased by: eating healthy carbs, tryptophan rich protein, decreasing sugar, exercise, sunshine, massage
Gaba: Nature’s Valium
Inhibitory neurochemical- slows, calms and decreases the activity of certain neurons
Puts the brakes on brain activity on an as needed basis
Makes us feel relaxed in body and emotions
Too little leaves us feeling anxious, dysregulated, overstimulated, stressed out, overwhelmed
Increase Gaba by eating high glutamate foods (such as banana and almond), exercise, improve sleep quality with calming ingredients like magnesium
Endorphin: Group of 20 plus known neurotransmitters
“Runner’s High”- a state of euphoria, bliss and pain tolerance brought on by extreme physical exertion
Natural painkillers
Helps us respond to and cope with fear and pain
Maintain pleasurable internal states
Flowing endorphins create whole body good feelings
Activated by tuning into something you love (appreciation mediation), think of someone saying nice things to you, exercise, chocolate, and feeling emotionally and socially secure, love and laughter, connection, shared experiences, speaking sweetly to a pet, nature, making music, the smell of vanilla and lavender
Neurochemicals of Arousal & Stress
*In conversation, these chemicals are activated through fear, judgement, and distrust
Cortisol: Stress hormone
Mobilizes energy, enhances memory, helps with fight or flight reactions
High levels long term: increase inflammation, weakens immune system, damages neurons, impacts memory, resilience and emotional regulation
Cause distrust
Adrenaline: Increases our heart rate and respiration helping us react to threats or calls to action with heightened energy and awareness
Noradrenaline: Similar to adrenaline without the rush
Feel energized and focused, able to shift focus and attention to keep in tune with what surroundings require
High levels alert stress response. Diet A poor diet high in bad carbs and sugar. Processed food and GMO’s will heighten these chemicals
From Conversational Intelligence, Judith Glaser, tells us is that the good
transmitters come in slower and hang out for a short period of time. The bad ones
come quicker and hang out longer. I have question whether this is simply by our
own conditioning and we have genetically set up our systems to respond this way
or if it is part of the blueprint? Have we set our systems up to stay longer in these
situations of stress and negative feelings and swimming deep in the
neurotransmitters that correspond by way of how the last number of generations
lived and reacted? Or was that simply by design… I’ll leave you to question that…
When the neurotransmitters are in balance and there is not an overabundance of
anything or a lack of anything- the system works well and you feel good…
Ways to change the landscape of your mind
Subconscious change
So how do you cause/create change?
There are 3 ways to initiate change from a subconscious stand point-
1 is hypnosis
2 is habituation- it take 30 days to create a habit. Repetitive action in an area
3 is energy psychology protocols- EMDR- Tapping, and the like all fall under this
bubble- these are methods that work on the level of the subconscious- not just
conscious. The work to “take apart neuroplasticity and create new
neuropathways. They can be talked about and leave you with the idea that there
is some hocupocus going on. The woowoo of spirituality and new age practice.
Which, when the spirit is added to the equation we can get a whole different mix
of and action to life. But, this is merely about the physical part of the system- how
it works and how much you can have control you have over it.
In Mind rewire we learn how to use the physical Built in processes and for lack of
a better term, applications of the body.
While I do not believe you can remove the spirit from the equation –the more you
take authority of the physical the more the spirit can come to light.
Illness and disease are part of the physical. They affect your soul not your spirit-
you do have total authority.
I use the simplest method possible that will put power back into your hands-
Becoming aware and knowing what is in your mind and then seeding the mind
with what you want is the best way to do it.
Being in a whole brain state allows for this to happen easily and effectively.
So to be in a whole brained state is what Mind Rewire is all about, and a rapid
change method that allows for quick overwriting of the subconscious thoughts
and beliefs that have seemingly deep grooves.
You will learn a technique with mind Rewire that will teach you exactly how to do
it and give you support to turn it into a practice that will benefit you the rest of
your life.
Life is an incredible adventure an when you are free to participate, you can use
your freedom of will, and learn to utilize the processes of your physical body –
when they a cohesive and functioning together, your quality of life is better and
you are in alignment with your best life.
Mind Rewire wants to give that back to you, and show you how it’s done-
But it’s up to you to make it happen… The possibilities are truly endless!!
