CAST YOUR WORRIES AWAY: TIPS TO STOP WORRYING

TODAY

OCTOBER 2010

Delta Sigma Theta: San Jose Alumnae Chapter | P.O. Box 6841 San Jose, CA

MIND SUBHEAD HERE

I don't know about you but I was a compulsive

worrier. I worried so much that I felt funny if I didn't

have anything to worry about. I remember the

evening before work I would think of everything I

had to worry about the next day. Sometimes there's a

need for worry. However, if you find yourself

worrying over every little thing and it takes away the

enjoyment of life, you may seriously want to address

this issue. If left untreated, worry can make you very

ill. Here are some techniques you can use to help you deal with your worries...

Write It Down

Jotting down what you're worrying about often helps

you get to the heart of the matter. What's really

bothering you? Sometimes I discover that what I

think I am worrying about ends up being the

symptom instead of the cause. Worry often brings

out emotions and you have to be careful because the

emotions can be deceitful and make you believe

things that aren't really true. When you start to worry,

take some time to write down what's troubling you.

Once you do get to the root of the problem, write

down solutions and alternatives to help you deal with

whatever is worrying you. Remember, there is a

solution to every problem, and jotting down your

thoughts often helps you feel better and may even

allow you to come up with a solution.

Think Positive

Positive thinking really is that effective. The concept

is pretty simple - negative thoughts product negative

results and positive thoughts product positive results.

Instead of agonizing over what could go wrong, try

focusing on what's good about the situation. Maybe

you could learn something from what you're going

through? Start looking at the situation like this and

you control the worry rather than letting the worry

control you.

Have Faith I learned that people worry simply because they do

not trust in God. Think about it. If you really have

faith and believe that God is in control of your life,

you'd never let worry cripple you.

If you are constantly worrying, try picking up a copy

of "In Pursuit of Peace" by Joyce Meyer. One of the

most powerful statements she made in this book was

that God equips us to handle everything we need for

the day and he'll do the same for us tomorrow. What's

the point in worrying about what lies ahead when God

has it all under control. Practice and pray

Meditation Meditation gets you to relax and focus on your

breathing. It also teaches you how to actually become

more relaxed and over time you'll eventually learn to

stop worrying about things altogether.

Accept Your Worry Sometimes the fear of more worry is more stressful

than the worry itself. One thing I learned to do when

I'm really stressing over something is to say to

myself... I feel the worry coming on. It's OK, though,

because I am bigger than this. It will soon pass. I

accept all the thoughts coming into my mind." It takes

away the power of the worry and soon you will start

feeling at ease

The Impact of Obama’s Healthcare Reform

September 23 marks the six-month anniversary of health

reform. It's also the date when several key insurance changes

come into effect. Here's what you need to know about how

your insurance is affected -

If you get insurance through your boss: Many people who

are insured through work won't notice immediate changes to

their health plans until their health plans renew or open

enrollment periods.

Coverage expansion for adult dependents until age 26:.

Employers will have to provide coverage for dependents of

workers who don't have access to other employer-based

health care coverage 'till age 26.

Children no longer denied coverage for pre-existing

conditions: Insurance plans can't deny coverage due to a pre-

existing condition to children under age 19.

Free Preventive Care: All new plans must cover certain

preventive services such as mammograms and colonoscopies

without charging a deductible, co-pay or coinsurance.

No lifetime limits on coverage: Insurers no longer can

impose lifetime dollar limits on essential benefits, like

hospital stays or expensive treatments.

Unrestricted doctor choice: Plans must allow pediatricians

and obstetrician/gynecologists to get primary care physician

status. This eliminates the requirement for patients to get

prior-authorization from their insurer or a doctor's referral to

see a pediatrician or OB/GYN.

Level charges for emergency services: Insurers must

remove prior authorizations for ER services and insurers can't

charge higher co-payments or co-insurance for out-of-

network ER providers.

Patient-friendly appeals process While insurers are

establishing new internal and external appeals processes for

claims they have to continue to pay your claims, and continue

paying for subsequent treatment, until the matter is resolved.

Strong women won't let anyone get the best of

them,

So skilled in defense even if they have to

pretend,

Yet a woman of strength gives her best to

everyone,

Knowing she’s anointed with blood from the

begotten One.

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the

same for tomorrow,

Refusing to take time looking back with

reverence and Godly sorrow,

The woman of strength realizes life's mistakes no

matter how slim,

While thanking God for the blessings as she

capitalizes on them.

A strong woman walks sure footedly with no

doubt in her mind,

Again, no matter what, she’ll not make this

mistake a second time,

But a woman of strength knows God will catch

her when she falls,

So when a situation arises again, she’s not afraid

to answer the call.

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on

her face,

Always doing whatever it takes to finish, seeking

only first place,

The woman of strength competes with an

emotional sense of grace,

Understanding it’s more important to run a Holy

Spirit filled race.

A strong woman has faith that for the journey

she’ll have enough,

No matter how uneven the terrain or roads being

rocky and rough,

A woman of strength knows it’s in the journey

she will become strong,

And the love of God is forever with her, no

matter how difficult or long.

A Strong Woman vs.

A Woman of Strength

A strong woman works out every day,

Pride in her appearance she portrays,

But a woman of strength kneels to pray,

Keeping her soul in shape, God leading

the way.

A strong woman isn't afraid of

anything,

Looking forward to challenges each day

will bring,

Women of strength show courage in the

midst of fear,

Knowing triumph through faith because

the Lord is near.

SJA Spotlight: Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) Seasonal depression, often called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is a depression that occurs each year at the

same time, usually starting in fall or winter and ending in spring or early summer. Between 4 and 6 percent of the

U.S. population suffers from SAD, while 10 to 20 percent may suffer from a more mild form of winter blues. 3/4

of the sufferers are women, most of whom are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Though SAD is most common during

these ages, it can also occur in children and adolescents. Older adults are less likely to experience SAD.

Symptoms

People who suffer from SAD have many of the common signs of depression: Sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss

of interest in their usual activities, withdrawal from social activities, and inability to concentrate. They often have

symptoms such as extreme fatigue and lack of energy, increased need for sleep, craving for carbohydrates, and

increased appetite and weight gain.

How can I tell if I have SAD?

If you have symptoms of depression, see your doctor for a thorough assessment.

How is SAD treated?

Research now shows that light therapy is an effective treatment for SAD. Sometimes antidepressant medicine is

used alone or in combination with light therapy. Spending time outdoors during the day and maximizing the

amount of sunlight you're exposed to at home and in the office.
