Making a fairy-tale cake takes

a bit of time and dedication,

but with this rainbow cake you

truly put your guests under a

spell. Wave your magic wand

and reveal the colours of the

cake-layers. Each slice is a party

on a plate.

Condensed recipe (for full

Cakes: 125 g butter – room

temperature

315 g granulated sugar

2 tsp. vanilla sugar

480 g flower

1 tbsp. baking powder

250 ml whole milk

3 large egg whites

(pink) food colouring paste

Vanilla syrup45 g granulated sugar.

50 ml water

¼ tsp. vanilla sugar

Meringue icing5 large egg whites

225 g granulated sugar

1 tsp. vanilla sugar

Rainbow cakes:Preheat oven to 175 C/ 350 F

Grease one or five cake pans

(15 cm diameter) and shake

with flower.

Whisk butter, sugar and vanilla

sugar.

Mix flower and baking powder

in a bowl.

Add flower mixture and milk in

parts to the butter mixture.

Whisk egg whites until foam

is firm.

Add egg whites to batter in

parts. Divide over cake pans.

Colour with food colouring pas-

te (NOT liquid food colouring).

Bake cakes in oven for 25-30

minutes.

Vanilla syrupMix water, sugar and vanilla

sugar in a pot. Bring to a boil

and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Let cool.

Mix egg whites, sugar and

vanilla sugar in heatproof bowl.

Put on top of pan with boiling

water and whisk continuously

until it reaches 65 C/150 F and

all sugar crystals are dissolved.

Take pan off heat. Keep mixing

till mixture is cooled down.

Making the cake:Layer all coloured cakes.

Cover each with vanilla syrup,

followed by a thin layer of icing.

Repeat.

Cover whole cake with a thin

layer of meringue icing.

Let set in fridge for 10 minutes.

Cover cake in thick layer of

frosting. Use spoon for texture.

Decorate cake with colourful

paper flags and toothpicks.

Regenboogbodems125 gram boter kamer-

temperatuur

315 gram kristal suiker

2 theelepels vanillesuiker

RegenboogbodemsVerwarm de oven voor op 175 C

Vet vijf bakvormen met een

diameter van 15 centimeter in

en bestuif ze met bloem.

Klop boter, suiker en

vanillesuiker.

Meng bloem en bakpoeder in

een kom.

Voeg bloemmengsel en melk in

delen toe aan het botermengsel.

Klop de eiwitten tot een stevig

schuim.

Spatel de eiwitten beetje bij

beetje door het beslag. Verdeel

het beslag gelijkelijk over de vijf

schaaltjes. Kleur met kleurstof

pasta (NIET vloeibare kleurstof)

Bak bodems gaar in 25-30

minuten.

VanillesiroopMeng water, suiker en vanille-

suiker in een pan. Breng aan de

kook en laat circa tien minuten

pruttelen. Laat afkoelen.

Doe eiwitten, suiker en

vanillesuiker in een hittebesten-

dige kom. Zet deze op een pan

zachtkokend water. Klop met een

garde tot het mengsel ongeveer

65 C is en alle suikerkristallen

gesmolten zijn. Neem de kom

van de pan.

Ga door met kloppen met een

mixer tot mengsel is afgekoeld.

Zo zet je de taart in elkaarLeg de eerste laag op een

taartschaal. Bestijk met vanille-

siroop en strijk er een dunne laag

frosting over uit. Herhaal.

Breng een dunne laag

meringuefrosting aan over de

hele taart en laat 10-15 minuten

stijf worden in de koelkast.

Breng een dikke laag frosting

aan op de hele taart.

Versier met 1 of meer vlaggetjes

van satéstokjes en mooi

gekleurd papier.

Their names are Julia

– outgoing, adven-

turous and curious –

and Sam – shy, quiet

and calm. They are two mice,

aged eight in human years and

they live in the Mouse Mansion,

a fantasy world created by artist

and writer Karina Schaapman.

It is an unbelievable, astoni-

shing world where an adventure

can happen in every room. There

are stairs, shops, basements,

nooks and crannies where Julia

and Sam discover the world they

live in.

The Mouse Mansion is currently

exhibited at the Public Library

in Amsterdam where visitors

can take their time to really see

the magical world that Sam and

Julia live in and escape reality.

Ze heten Julia – avontuurlijk, nieuwsgierig

en eigenwijs – en Sam – verlegen, rustig en

eerlijk. Ze zijn twee muisjes van ongeveer

acht jaar in mensenleeftijd en ze wonen in

het Muizenhuis, een fantasiewereld gemaakt door

kunstenaar en schrijfster Karina Schaapman.

Het is een ongelooflijke en fantastische wereld waar

een avontuur in een klein hoekje schuilt. Er zijn

trappen, winkeltjes, kelders, zolders en allerlei

kamertjes in het enorme huis waar Julia en Sam

Steeds weer nieuwe dingen ontdekken.

Het muizenhuis staat op het moment tentoongesteld

in de openbare bieb in Amsterdam. Hier kunnen

bezoekers echt de tijd nemen om het huis te bekij-

ken en even de beslommeringen van het dagelijks

leven te vergeten.

De boekrechten zijn over de hele wereld verkocht. En

kinderen van Japan tot Duitsland, en van Zweden tot

Italie genieten van de avonturen van Sam & Julia.

Wereldwijven

INTERMEZZO/WERELDWIJVEN HANDWERKLAB

Een idee kan soms zo simpel zijn, en toch zo betekenisvol, zoals

bij het Intermezzo/Wereldwijven Handwerk Lab. Hier komen

vrouwen van allerlei leeftijden en culturen samen om prachtige

truien, levenskussens en andere dingen te naaien, breien of

haken. Soms in opdracht van een ontwerper, andere keren voor

een gewone klant.

In 2006 vroeg Jolanda Branderhorst, zakelijk en creatief leider

van Intermezzo, zich af waarom ontwerpers toch zo vaak naar

verre landen gaan voor de ambachtelijke uitvoering van hun

ontwerpen. Waarom kunnen vrouwen uit onze eigen multi-

culturele samenleving dat werk niet doen? Natuurlijk kunnen

ze dat, dacht Jolanda. En ze richtte het Wereldwijven Handwerk-

Lab op, waar vrouwen uit verschillende culturen in een prettige,

sociale omgeving samenkomen om te handwerken.

Nu is het lab een groot success. De handwerkers maken prach-

tige producten voor kunstenaars, ontwerpers en particulieren,

zoals knuffels van traditionele didas dekens en levenskussens.

Doordeweeks staat de deur van het HandwerkLab open en kun-

nen belangstellenden over de schouder van de handwerkers

mee kijken, of ze kunnen rondkijken in de winkel.

SPROOKJESKAMER

Helma Hartogs renoveerde een oude garage en maakte hier een

prachtige plek voor haar sprookjesachtige winkel en workshop

studio. In de winkel verkoopt ze kinderkleding en accesoires,

daarachter zit het atelier, waar ze zich te buiten kan gaan aan

haar passie: handwerken.

Zodra je het atelier binnenstapt is het alsof een magische deur

opengaat en je een fantasiewereld binnenstapt met bollen wol,

kluwen katoen en gekleurde stoffen, In het midden staat een

grote houten tafel gedekt met taartborden en sierlijk servies.

Voor iedere workshop zoekt Helma zelf een trendy project uit

dat binnen de duur van de workshop af is. ‘Niets is leuker dan

je werkje mee naar huis te kunnen nemen aan het eind van de

middag.’

Helma’s stijl is romantisch en sprookjesachtig. Sprookjes

zijn vaak de inspiratie voor de projecten die ze bedenkt voor

handwerkers van elk niveau. Iedereen kan handwerken volgens

Helma. “Het is zoals de Koning zei in Alice en Wonderland: Begin

bij het begin en ga door tot je bij het einde komt: stop daar.’

INTERMEZZO/WERELDWIJVEN

Sometimes a concept can be so simple, yet so meaningful. This

is the case at the Intermezzo Wereldwijven (Women of the

World) Needlework Lab. It is a place where women of all ages, all

cultures and all backgrounds come together to knit, crochet and

embroider. Sometimes they work on cushions or sweaters, other

times they handcraft a small series for a designer.

Back in 2006 Jolanda Branderhorst, project initiator at Inter-

mezzo, raised the question: ‘Why are designers going abroad for

needlework when we have a large community of women from

these countries right here at our doorstep in The Netherlands?’ A

valid question, with a simple solution: bring women of all cultu-

res together and create an inclusive environment where they can

work and socialize.

Now, the Lab is thriving, making beautiful products for both

designers and individuals, such as teddy bears from traditional

blankets, or personalized cushions. On weekdays the lab has an

open-door policy so the public can come in to watch the women

perform their craft and browse in the Intermezzo store.

SPROOKJESKAMER

Helma Hartogs renovated an old car repair shop and turned it

into a whimsical wonderland. The store with kids’ fashion and

accessories is located at the front, the workshop studio at the

back is where she expresses her passion: needle crafts.

Stepping into the studio, is like opening a magical door and ente-

ring a world of colourful yarn, wool, cotton and fabric with in the

middle a large wooden table, set for a tea party with cake stands

and dainty dishware.

For every workshop, whether it is crocheting, knitting or embroi-

dering, Helma picks a trendy project that can be finished within

an afternoon. ‘It is so satisfying to make something and be able

to take home the finished product.’

Helma’s stye is romantic and whimsical. Fairytales are often the

inspiration for projects that she makes sure are always suitable

for crafters of any skill level: “It’s like the King in Alice in Wonder-

land said: Begin at the beginning and go on until you come to the

One of the best aspects of any kind of needlework is that it

creates togetherness. Sitting with a group of women and

taking the time to create something beautiful and

meaningful feels incredibly peaceful and fulfilling.

Studio ROOF

Design through kids, is how Romy Boesveldt and Ilya Yashkin from Studio ROOF describe their collections. ‘We have three kids who inspire us to make design that stimulates a child’s creati-

vity and imagination. So when we finish a prototype, we take it to our ‘test-lab’ at home and observe how our kids play. I guess we are a family business in the most literal sense of the word: for kids (and grown-ups), by parents.’

Studio ROOF used to be Kidsonroof and was launched in 2005 with the Casa Cabana, a white playhouse made of recycled and biodegradable cardboard. Kids can play in the house and they can decorate the outside with paint and pencils. The playhouse was an instant success, so Romy and Ilya decided to produce more design with a colourful esthetic that is playful and innovative.

‘Right now, we are in love with our Pop Out Decora-tion line. Perfect for Christmas or other winter cele-brations.’ The simple lines of the Circle Ornaments go back to Ilya’s first love: three-dimensional design. He is excited that Studio ROOF is better communicating that their design is not just for kids. Our old name implied that we were for kids, but we make a lot of products for adults too. Our kids are growing up, and we noticed our design evolved with their age. This evolution needed a new name.’

eigenlijk begonnen’, vertel-

‘We hebben drie kinderen

en zij zijn onze grootste in-

spiratie bij het maken van

design dat de creativiteit

en fantasie van kinderen

stimuleert. Dus, als we een

prototype af hebben,

nemen we het mee naar

huis, naar ons eigen ‘test-

lab’, en dan kijken we wat

de ‘testers’ ervan vinden.

We zijn een familiebed-

rijf in de meest letterlijke

zin van het woord: voor

kinderen (en volwassenen),

door ouders.’

Studio ROOF was voor-

heen Kidsonroof, en is

onstaan in 2005 met Casa

Cabana. Een wit speelhuis

van gerecycled en biologisch afbreekbaar karton.

Kinderen kunnen er niet alleen in spelen, ze kunnen

de buitenkant versieren zoals ze maar willen. Het

speelhuis was meteen een enorm success, dus al

gauw volgde er meer speelse, innovatieve en

kleurrijke ontwerpen van Romy en Ilya.

‘We zijn erg trots op onze nieuwe naam: Studio

ROOF. We communiceren nu veel beter dat we niet

alleen design voor kidneren maken, maar ook voor

volwassenen.’ De Circle Ornaments bijvoorbeeld,

met mooie kleuren en eenvoud, of houten meubilair

zoals de ROOF bench. ‘Onze kinderen worden steeds

groter en – logischerwijs – voegen we onze produc-

ten naar hun leeftijd. Deze evolutie had een nieuwe

naam nodig, vandaar Studio ROOF.’

What is your favorite fairytale?

“I love the story of Peter Pan. And Tinkerbell is such

an adorable character in the movie. During the

Mim-pi photoshoot I had a lot of fun licking that

giant lollypop. It made me laugh so hard!”

Do you have a cat?

“No, but I do have a dog. A super-duper adorable

dog. But I like cats too. Do you know which famous

cat I like? Dikkie Dik!”

Do you like to knit or crochet? And for

who would you like to knit a scarf?

“I can’t knit or crochet very well. I do like to embroi-

der! But if I was a good knitter, I would knit a scarf

for Adriaan from X-Factor. And hopefully, he would

wear it all the time!”

Imagine you had to live in a box, how

would you decorate it?

“With tons of cute furniture. I would paint the

walls yellow and purple, with roses and dolphins

at the bottom. I would fill it up with cozy pillows,

lots of games and – if I have enough room – my art

supplies. Oh! And I would never move anywhere

without my dog. So he has to come along.”

“To what song would you like to walk the

catwalk and in which outfit?”

Easy! To Kiss You by One Direction.

I would wear my new Mim-pi coat

and my new Mim-pi dress. I would

die my hair blonde and put in lots

of curls. I would wear purple

lipstick and blue eye shadow

and I would stick on pink fake

eyelashes.”

Wow! One of our models, Roosmarijn van der Hoek,

is famous! She is a film and TV actress. Mim-pi

designer Eleonora: “I predict she’s our new

Carice van Houten. Roosmarijn is multi-talen-

ted, is very expressive and a ‘one-take wonder’;

each photograph of her is fantastic!’ We

interviewed her after our photoshoot.

Wow! Eén van onze modellen, Roosmarijn van der

Hoek, is beroemd! Ze is niet alleen Mim-Pi model,

maar ook actrice in films en TV-series. Mim-pi

ontwerpster Eleonora: “Ze wordt vast de nieuwe

Carice van Houten. Ze is heel veelzijdig, erg

expressief en een ‘one-take wonder’; elke foto

van haar is fantastisch!” Wij mochten haar na

afloop van de fotoshoot interviewen.

“Mijn lievelingssprookje is Peter Pan. Tinkerbell

vind ik het leukste karakter in het verhaal. Zo’n

schattig elfje. Tijdens de Mim-pi fotoshoot vond ik

het allerleukst om naar die grote lollie te happen.”

Heb jij een poes?

“Nee. Ik heb geen poes. Ik heb wel een hondje. Een

heeeeeeel lief hondje. Maar ik vind poezen ook lief

hoor. Weet je welke poes ik leuk vind? Dikkie Dik!”

Houd jij van handwerken? Breien of haken

misschien? En voor wie zou je wel een sjaal

willen breien?

“Ik kan niet zo goed breien of haken. Borduren

vind ik wel leuk! Maar als ik wel goed zou kunnen

breien dan zou ik een mooie, warme sjaal maken

voor Adriaan van X-Factor! En dan hoop ik na-

tuurlijk dat hij hem heel veel draagt.’

Stel dat jij in een doos zou moeten wonen,

hoe zou je die dan inrichten?

“Met allemaal leuke meubeltjes natuurlijk. En de

muren verf ik geel en paars met onderlangs rozen

en dolfijntjes. Ik maak het heel gezellig met veel

kussens, veel games en hopelijk heb ik dan nog

ergens plek om mijn knutselspullen op te bergen.

Oh, en ik zou nooit in een doos gaan wonen zon-

der mijn hondje. Dus die moet ook mee.”

“Op welk liedje zou jij over de catwalk wil-

len lopen en in welke outfit?”

Makkelijk! Op Kiss You van One Direction. En dan

het liefst in mijn nieuwe Mim-pi jas met mijn

nieuwe Mim-pi jurk. Mijn haar wil ik dan lekker

wild: blond met heel veel krullen. Voor make-up:

lekker gek met pimpelaarse lippenstift, blauwe

oogschaduw en roze plakwimpers.”
