From Italy, winner of the European Comedy Award and a sold-out hit at
last year’s Festival, this virtuoso show was inspired by French novelist
Raymond Queneau’s Omnibus-Exercises of Style, in which one short story
is re-told in many ways. In sixty increasingly hilarious minutes, actor/
mime Paolo Nani goes through the routine of writing a letter in a succes-
sion of different characterisations and styles. Each self-contained episode
is filled with artistry and visual humour.

Like a giant marionette, Nicole Mossoux floats above the stage sus-pended by a cord which is both her means of support and a barrier to her freedom. In this new follow-on to the company’s award-winning Twin Houses, which explored the relation-ship between performer and puppets, Gradiva reveals the powers of sugges-tion that animated figures can exer-cise on human beings. A seamless blend of dance and theatre and a compelling journey to the furthest reaches of your imagination. ‘Spoken text and explicable gestures could not begin to define the nebulous
sensibilities that this show brings into
focus. It nudges at the very beingness of
being. If this is the way mime is going,
then three cheers’. INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

Catalan performers Xavier Marti and Christian Atanasiu have character observation down to a fine art in this series of silent, bittersweet sketches. Innocuous situations are taken to extremes, realistic yet absurd, where sentiment plunges into cynicism and the small tragedies of daily routine become too funny for words. Winners of the Innovation Award for Comedy at the Moers Festival, the duo makes its British debut with these performances. Leave higher sensibilities at home - come and enjoy a night of slapstick and sight gags, dark humour and physical comedy skills. ‘Simple everyday situations are brought wickedly, sometimes
brutally to their humorous
conclusion in wonderfully crafted scenes...’ RHEINISCHE POST

The work of Birmingham-based Stan’s Cafe has reso-nated through the physical theatre world for nearly a decade. Somewhere between a peep show and a fairground ride, its latest production lasts just 180 seconds and is performed for an audience of one, seated in a small viewing booth. Using slide projection and live performance, two actors conjure up a dense emotional narrative from a whirl of beautiful cinematic images; close-ups, long shots, interiors and exte-riors, dissolves and superim-positions.
The immediacy is thrilling, with a latent charge which sustains long after viewing. It’s Your Film is staged for you alone. It plays ten times per hour - book your own private viewing NOW.

In a series of extraordinary
vignettes performed to the
atmospheric music of top
British composers Pete
McPhail, Glyn Perrin and
Simon Walters, marionettist
Stephen Mottram creates pow-
erful animation theatre, for
adults. The incredible world
they inhabit is full of sur-
prises, from the most elegant
and tender moments to darkly
mystifying magic. Humour
combines with the macabre to
create a richly teasing visual
feast, while uneasiness grows
as the puppets become more
and more independent of the
artist who controls them.
Sophisticated visual theatre

Part Eraserhead, part Gormen-ghast, part Charles Dickens, Snuffhouse Dustlouse is the poignant tale of a half-human half-sack figure whose obsessive daily rituals are threatened by the sudden arrival of an outsider. Forgotten truths about the past emerge, an ordered world is thrown into chaos. With its bizarre stories and won-derfully Heath Robinson mechan-ical sets, Faulty Optic’s unique style of animation theatre has fascinated audiences around the world First created ten years ago, Snuffhouse Dustlouse has become a timeless classic, an orgy of visual delights including an auto-mated thunder machine, pickled talking heads and a spectacularly glittering finale. ‘Sucked into this weird world we

Russia’s controversial, contemporary clown ensemble Derevo has already enjoyed great
success at the Mime Festival with its apocalyptic The Red Zone (1998), and in contrasting
style with Once (1999), a fairy tale about love.
In this electrifying new solo show, Derevo founder member Tanya Khabarova revisits the
elemental, twilight landscape of The Red Zone. With extraordinary charisma, silent force,
and drawing on a mastery of butoh and raw commedia, she reveals the darker side of
clown theatre.
‘Terrifying and tantalising...it’s the razor-edged contrast in tone that makes Red Zone so
extraordinary. Poised between structure and void, it is a must-see in the truest sense.’

Following the success of Faces of the Night at the 1999 Festival, Frank Soehnle returns with
another offbeat masterpiece from the Figurentheater Tübingen repertoire. Set in the seedy, demi-
mondaine Flamingo Bar, a tale of seduction and desire unfolds - a wordless intermezzo for fans,
shoes, and every sort of puppet object and animated figure.
‘It should be hard to believe that sticks, rags and strings - no more than can be carried in one hand
- could elicit such emotion, laughter and curiosity, but the German puppeteer Frank Soenhle makes
it easy to accept. None of the puppets is large and Soenhle never tries to hide the work of his
hands, yet the puppets are exquisitely suggestive and their movements hint fleetingly, as though
out of the corner of your eye, at outrageous lust and longing.’

The past decade has seen a renaissance of 'circus theatre' with the success of such companies as Archaos, Cirque de Soleil, Licedei and Slava Polunin. This year's Festival opens with an interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins by aerialists, No Ordinary Angels; the Millenium Dome has put circus at the middle of its attractions and increasing numbers of young performers are developing circus skills and bringing them into theatre performance.Led by a panel of leading practitioners, this discussion explores the notion of 'circus theatre' and highlights its pleasures and pitfalls.
