A million other people probably have used the same phrase time and time again in their cover letter and during their interview. In today’s competitive job market, your resume needs to be innovative, unique, and eye-catching. This can’t be ac- complished by using the same tired phrases that recruiters and hir- ing managers see and hear just about every day. Career strategist Jodi Brockington, founder & president of Niara Consulting talks some of the most overused resume phrases and how we can put them to rest for ultimate job seeking success. I’m a great team player: This phrase is used far too often because job seekers know that every employer wants a team player. However, it’s best to demonstrate how you’ve been a team player rather than just saying that you are one. “’Team player’ can also be misleading because it can suggest that you are a follower rather than a leader,” Brocking- ton says. Consider phrases like “played various roles,” “worked with multiple departments,” “thrived in diverse work environments,” or “handled a variety of tasks.” “The team player thing is kind of played out,” she adds. I have extensive experience in … : People love to use this phrase, whether they’ve been working for 10 days or 10 years. Extensive is a very vague word that doesn’t tell an em- ployer much about the actual experience you have, Brockington says. “[Extensive expe- rience] can imply that you’ve been stagnant or that you’re older.” There was a time when this phrase was more acceptable because employers sought out individuals who had been doing the same thing for a long time. “Nowadays people are looking to hire that ‘master of many,’ ” Brockington says. Em- ployers are more impressed by job seekers who have advanced and have multiple areas of expertise. More specific phrases like “five years progressive experience in project man- agement and staff leadership” are a better option. I’m an awesome multi-tasker: The fact that you can surf the Web while talking on the phone doesn’t make you a multi-tasker. In addition, multi-tasking isn’t necessarily a good trait if it isn’t done effectively. Brockington says that if not used in the proper context, “multitasker” can lead employers to believe that you aren’t detail-oriented or able to pay adequate attention to specific tasks. It may be better to include that you are “able to prioritize and efficiently manage multiple assignments” rather than just saying that you’re a multi-tasker. I am entrepreneurial-minded: This word can be particularly damaging if it’s not something (continued on page 4)

The Weekend Edition/In The Black August 25, 2017 Page 34 MiscuesThat CanTransform PopularBrands IntoTroubledBrandsEarly this year, The Limited shut

down its 250 clothing stores andnot long after that the women’s ap-parel chain announced it was filingfor bankruptcy protection.Just like that, a brand that had

been a mainstay of shoppingmalls across America disappearedfrom the retail front. What happened to force the

company’s hand? Several factorscame into play, including an inabil-ity to compete with “fast fashion”stores that rush the latest fashionsinto consumers’ hands, as well asthe chain’s sale several years agoto a private equity firm that cutcosts but couldn’t find a buyer. However, analysts also sug-

gested that, like many retailers,The Limited failed to keep up withdramatic changes in shoppinghabits and quick-changing fashionsensibilities, making it less rele-vant to its target consumers. While it’s not unusual for brands

to head down the path to irrele-vancy, it’s also not inevitable, saysLarry Light, a global brand revital-

ization expert and CEO of thebusiness-consulting firm Arcature(www.arcature.com).“A brand can innovate itself out

of a death spiral,” Light says. “Justas an example, IBM may have lostits relevance in computers andlaptops, but it saved itself by fo-cusing on servers, information, and cloud computing.”Some people insist that all

brands eventually will go througha natural life cycle from birth todeath, but he disagrees with thatview.“It’s possible for brands to live

forever, but they have to be prop-erly managed,” says Light, co-au-thor with Joan Kiddon of Six Rulesfor Brand Revitalization. “Too oftenbrands get into trouble due to theself-inflicted actions of their own-ers.”Light says there are probably a

dozen identifiable ways busi-nesses can make a mess of theirbrands. Here are four:• The loss of relevance. Stay-

ing relevant means always stayingaware of changes to the land-scape, the customers, the com-petitive brands, and your brand.“Understanding what your audi-ence needs and how they obtaintheir products and services is theway to remain relevant,” Lightsays.• The lack of a coherent plan

to win. Having a coherent strat-egy that aligns employees andoutside partners accomplishes alot on the way to positive perform-ance. But the plan needs the clear,

consistent, visual, and verbal sup-port of leadership. “It also must

contain the vision for the brandand the plan to achieve this vi-sion,” Light says. “It’s a top-downstrategy. Without a clear and vi-brant plan to win, a brand is direc-tionless.”• The lack of a balanced

brand-business scorecard. Abrand-business scorecard allowsleaders to view the critical indica-

tors necessary to create growththat is both profitable and endur-ing, rather than one or the other. Light says such a scorecard re-

inforces the importance of produc-ing a proper balance betweenboth business and brand results.Using measurable milestones –such as sales, profits, price andpromotion – it evaluates whether

the brand leadership is doing theright things in the right way.• The disregard for the chang-

ing world. Technology changes, demographics change and so doplenty of other factors that can af-fect a brand. “Although it’s impossible to pre-

dict the future,” Light says, “it is(continued on page 4)

absolutely necessary for business leaders to keep their eyes, ears, mind, and heart open to what may be possible and to what is actuallyhappening around them.”“Some brands that experience trouble are very successful in pulling

out of the downward spiral,” Light says. “But the best way to not haveto revitalize a brand is to avoid becoming a troubled brand in the firstplace.”About Larry LightLarry Light, a global brand revitalization expert, is co-author with Joan

Kiddon of Six Rules for Brand Revitalization. 4 Miscues That CanTransform PopularBrands Into TroubledBrands

that the position calls for. Most job seekers refer to themselves as “entrepreneurial” inorder to show independence and leadership skills. However, the term often implies thatyou “lack work experience or want to do things your own way,” Brockington says. She suggests that a better approach would be to highlight your skills in strategic plan-

ning, leadership, understanding corporate vision and culture, risk-taking, and out-of-the-box thinking.

I work well in a fast-paced environment: It’s not very likely that an employer will refer totheir company as slow-paced. So, it really isn’t necessary to indicate that you can “workin a fast-paced environment.” The term is too general and doesn’t tell the employer aboutthe specific settings in which you’re most experienced, Brockington says. She suggeststhat you provide more valuable phrases that talk about competency and completion oftasks such as “implement key time-management skills in high-demand settings” or “ableto exceed company expectations by prioritizing tasks and completing assignments aheadof schedule.”While these phrases might be cliche, Brockington says they can work for or against a

job seeker. While there are no set rules on what phrases should and should not be used,it’s important to research the company and the role to see what might work and whatshould be avoided. Whenever possible, stay away from generic and general terms and always quantify or

quality your experience with specific numbers and tangible evidence of your accomplish-ments.

3 Ways To Bring Jobs Back To America’s Forgotten Communities

They were forgotten communities, at least in the minds of many people who lived in them.Even as the rest of the country recovered from the recession, people in the nation’s coal fields and Rust Belt

continued to suffer economically. They longed for a return to the days when their region could produce high-paying jobs, and they helped boost Donald Trump to the presidency when he promised to do just that.

Already, the hard work of making that happen is underway – but it’s not just as a project emanating fromWashington, D.C. There are reasons for optimism in such places as the Mid-Ohio Valley that stretches acrossOhio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and where Shale Crescent USA is doing its work.

“You have an area with the largest natural gas field in the world,” Kozera says. “There is easy transportationon the Ohio River and you have people eager to work. Being close to half of the markets in North America alsohelps. We could be on the verge of a petrochemical industrial boom, and the average job in that industry pays$100,000.” Of course, it may be easier for communities to achieve an economic revival when there’s a much-coveted natural resource to tap into, but there are other steps leaders in these “forgotten communities” cantake to improve their fortunes, Kozera says. Those include:

• Take the initiative. Business and community leaders shouldn’t wait for government or outside industryto make something happen. They need to take action. “That’s what the people who formed Shale Crescent USAdid,” Kozera says. “They knew if something was going to happen, they would need to be the catalyst for makingit happen themselves.”

• Create awareness. Once you know what you want to achieve, you must get the word out to people andindustries that can help you make it happen. For example, Shale Crescent USA is making sure that the petro-chemical, glass and other industries know about the advantages the Mid-Ohio Valley provides as a place togrow or relocate. Government can do a lot to help bring in business, Kozera says, but typically doesn’t do avery good job of staying focused on marketing and sales.

• Remember that prosperity is contagious. Sometimes when multiple cities or states are involved, they be-come competitive and forget that exactly where industry locates doesn’t matter because the whole region willbenefit from economic development. As people gain good paychecks, more businesses will spring up to servethem. The tax base also increases, which means schools, roads, parks and other government services can alsoimprove.

“Something like this isn’t a simple task,” Kozera says. “It takes a team effort. If you can get people in a re-gion working together, you’ll have a much greater chance of accomplishing your goals.”

3 Ways The Best LeadersSet Themselves Apart

Great leaders are in great demand, whether a coach for a football team, a CEOfor a corporation or a general for the Army. But in many cases people are mistakenabout what makes a good leader. Often, leadership is viewed as being able to es-tablish resources and priorities to acquire worthwhile goals. While that’s part ofit, true leadership involves a lot more than that, says Mayur Ramgir (www.mayur-ramgir.com), author of Evolve Like a Butterfly: A Metamorphic Approach to Lead-ership.

“Actual leadership deals more with inspiration than simple productivity,” Ramgirsays. And for leaders to be truly inspirational, they have to adapt and adopt differ-ent leadership styles at different stages in business, says Ramgir, who also is pres-ident and CEO of Zonopact Inc., a software development firm that specializes ininnovative business solutions.

“If the leader is not able to adapt to the rapidly changing environment, thewhole organization might suffer losses,” he says. “The key thing to remember isthat people want to be led by example so that they can follow suit. That means it’sup to the leader to set the tone and the attitude for how to handle the challengesthe team inevitably will face.”

So what are some of the traits and attitudes leaders need if they want to moti-vate their teams so that they perform at the highest levels? Ramgir says a few ofthose include:

• Self-belief is critical. Your success as a leader lies in your ability to believein yourself. You must feel that you can handle whatever situation arises. “But it’simportant to understand that authentic leaders are not only aware of theirstrengths, but of their limitations,” Ramgir says. In other words, self-belief is apositive trait, but it isn’t a license for narcissism or hubris.

• Your confidence inspires others. If you can convince yourself that you cando it, then the rest of the world will automatically be convinced. “It makes a bigdifference in how people see you and react to you when you exude confidence,”Ramgir says. “The saying, ‘Don’t let them see you sweat,’ certainly applies to beinga leader.”

• Supporting your team pays off. Getting the chance to help others is the op-portunity to help yourself in disguise. “When you provide employees what theyneed in order to reach and exceed their potential, the result will be high perform-ance levels and loyalty,” Ramgir says. “That’s good for you and the organizationas a whole.”

“Leadership is never about using the brute force of authority to force your ideasdown other people’s throats,” Ramgir says. “This is not the forte of the real leader. In fact, it’s quite the contrary. True leaders work only to better the society aroundthem and the world at large.”
