Nutrition Articles

Calcium is an important nutrient that helps promote strong bone and teeth. The best calcium sources come from dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt. You can start your child’s school day with a bowl of milk added with whole-grain cereals and few slices of fresh fruits. Then serve yoghurt, cheese, soymilk after school or between meals for a nourishing snack. Calcium-fortified breakfast cereals, breads and juices are fine alternatives to help meet your child’s daily requirement.

The recommended calcium intake (RNI Malaysia 2005) for different age groups are as below:

Age group (year-old) RNI for calcium (mg/day)Children (1-3) 500Children (4-6) 600Children (7-9) 700Adolescence boy and girls (10-18) 1000Adult Men (19-65) 800Adult Women (19-50) 800

During infancy, childhood and adolescence, the bone growth is the greatest, where bones are actively formed and bone mass increases progressively until about the age of 20-30 years when it is at its peak. After that, bone mass begins to decline. So, it is very important to consume sufficient amount of calcium at these stages of growth.

However, having high calcium in food is not enough because we need to ensure that calcium is absorbed well in our bodies. Vitamins D and the mineral magnesium are

Page 4: Milo

needed by the body.

Eating 1-2 servings from milk and dairy group can help your child meet these recommendations. One serving equals to 1 cup of dairy milk products (200 ml of milk or yoghurt) or 1 piece of cheddar cheese. For your information, one serving (30g) of Nestlé MILO® packed with 156mg of calcium and it is high in magnesium and enriched with phosphorus. It is essential that greater efforts are made during childhood, adolescence and young adulthood to attain a good peak bone mass. Give your child a mug of MILO® drink to contribute to his/her mineral recommendations.

Children need a lot of energy for learning at school or playing around the garden. A good breakfast provides the energy your child needs to start the day. Breakfast is an essential meal in your child’s day. Choosing good breakfast is important to boost your kid’s attention and concentration which they need to learn in school.

How do we measure energy in food? Energy in food is measured in calories. It is a way of measuring how much of energy different kinds of food provide. Do you know which food give the most energy? Of all three macronutrients, fats are the most concentrated source of energy. 1g of fat you burn will give you 9kcal. While carbohydrates and protein, each give 4 kcal of energy for every gram we eat.

Apart from choosing the best sources of energy, we also need to understand the importance of the energy balance in order to keep our body weight steady. To begin with, we need to

Page 5: Milo

understand the relationship between energy intake and the energy output. Energy intake is the

amount of calories you gain through consumption of carbohydrate, fat and protein. Energy output is the amount of calories you use for physical activity and Basal Metabolic Rate (energy needed to perform basic body functions). When your energy intake is greater than energy output (resulting from overeating and inactivity), you have positive energy balance, which results in weight gain. On the other hand, when your energy intake is lower than energy output, you have negative energy balance, resulting in weight loss.

We need energy to maintain Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and for our activities. BMR is the

energy needed to maintain basic body functions such as breathing and blood circulation. Your BMR is influenced by a number of factors, including gender, age, body composition. Generally, men have higher BMR than women because of the greater percentage lean muscle tissue.

People with BMI of 25 kg/m2 and above are considered as overweight, and BMI of 30 kg/m2 and above are obese. Overweight and obesity increases the risk of several diseases. However, this BMI measurement is not applicable to use for children and adolescents who are still growing, pregnant women and highly muscular individuals.

Nestlé MILO® is packed with ACTIGEN-E® and PROTOMALT®! ACTIGEN-E® is a combination 8 vitamins and 4 minerals which help promote the optimal release of the energy from food (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) we eat. PROTOMALT® is an extract from malt barley and cereal which provide energy. Children required a lot of energy and MILO® drink

Page 6: Milo

gives children the energy during recess or after school for extra curricular activities. With a mug of MILO® drink, parents can now be sure that their children are fully fueled up in school.

Want your child to grow up strong and healthy? There is a way-eating healthily! Everyone knows how to eat but do you understand how to eat healthy? No food by itself (except for breast milk which is adequate for babies up to six months of age) has all nutrients needed for full growth and health. Food therefore must be varied and balanced. Balanced diet involved consuming a variety of foods in correct amount.

Click to view larger imageFood Pyramid can be used as a guide to choose foods for a balanced diet daily. Food pyramid is made up of 4 major food groups: grain group; vegetables and fruits group; milk and dairy products group; and meat and legumes group. Fats and oils are not a food group, but we need some for good health. Good sources are from fish, nuts and vegetables oils.

Grain groups give us carbohydrates, - the main sources of energy that help children grow, learn and play. Carbohydrates come from grains, cereal products and tubers such as rice, bread, oats, noodles, potatoes. Whole grains foods, like whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice provide fiber and other nutrients that help keep us healthy. One serving equals to 1 slice of bread, or ½ cups of cooked rice, or 1 cup of plain rice porridge, or ½ cup of ready -to-eat breakfast cereal or, ½ cup of mee. We should eat 8-12 servings of grains everyday. A nutritious cup of Nestlé MILO® drink contains the powerful nutrients- carbohydrates including fiber

Foods in vegetables and fruits group give us vitamins and minerals, which help to boost the immune system, support growth and development, and also help cells and organs do their job. Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble (Vitamin A, D, E and K) and water soluble Vitamin C and B Vitamins such as Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Biotin and Folic Acid. The fat-soluble vitamins can dissolve in fat and can be stored in your body while the water soluble vitamins cannot. Nestlé MILO® is enriched with Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6

and B12 and also Vitamin C. One serving of vegetables and fruits equal to ½ cup cooked dark green leafy vegetables, or 1 medium whole orange, pear or apple, 1 medium-sized banana, or 1 slice papaya, pineapple and watermelon, or ½ cup of fruit juice. We should eat 3-5 servings from this group.

Milk and dairy products group such as milk, cheese and yoghurt together provide calcium, protein and other essential nutrients such as some B vitamins. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. Protein helps build and repair body tissue. One serving of milk group food equal to 1 glass of milk, or 1 cup of yoghurt, or 1 slice of cheese. We should eat 1-2 servings from this group.

The meat and legumes group contains food from both animals and plants. Foods in this group provide protein and iron. Protein helps build and repair body tissue. Iron is important for our body to make red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of body. Foods in meat group include poultry, fish, red meat, egg, legumes (e.g. beans, peas and lentils) and tofu. Examples of One serving of meat and legume group food are 1 medium-sized chicken drumstick, 1 medium sized mackerel, 2 matchbox size lean meat, or 2 eggs, or ½ cup of beans. Your child should eat 2-3 servings

So parents, power up with a cup of nutritious MILO® drink. It has the essential nutrients that your child needs!

Did you know that every cell in your body is made up of protein? It is an essential nutrient derived from amino acids, which is important for healthy growth and development. Besides building muscles, it is required by the body for immunity functions,

Page 8: Milo

essential hormones and enzymes production, and it also acts as an emergency energy source when carbohydrates and fats are unable to meet the body’s energy needs.

We can get protein from both animals and plants sources. In general, animal proteins include meats (beefs and lamb), poultry, dairy products, seafood (fish and shellfish), and eggs. Plant proteins include nuts, seeds, grains and legumes (beans, peas and lentils) and legume product like soy foods.

How much of Protein is enough for your child? Protein needs depends on a child’s age. References are based on the Recommended Nutrient Intakes for Malaysia 2005.

Iodine for Proper Brain Development

Did you know almost half of Australian primary school children are Iodine deficient*?

Although a person only needs a teaspoon of Iodine in their whole lifetime, the thyroid gland is unable to store this amount. So small amounts of Iodine must be consumed regularly in our diet for normal mental and physical development.

Iodine was once commonly found in iodised salt and dairy products, but new processing practices have decreased the level of Iodine from our diet. Children who are mildly to moderately Iodine deficient may not reach their full potential at school. So to help address the Iodine gap, MILO B-SMART contains Iron and Iodine for mental development. And just one glass contains 35% of a child’s recommended daily intake of Iodine

Iron for Mental Development

Iron is essential for good development and growth in children. It’s required for normal energy production and for carrying oxygen in the blood. Without it, the brain and working muscles will not receive the oxygen they need. So, it’s easy to see why children need Iron for normal growth and mental development. In fact, inadequate dietary Iron intake in children has been linked with restlessness, poor concentration and irritability. A glass of MILO B-SMART contains 50% of your child’s recommended dietary intake of Iron as well as Vitamin C to aid with Iron absorption

ACTIV-B for Energy Release

ACTIV-B is a unique combination of micro-nutrients, including B-Vitamin Complex, Vitamin C, Iron and Calcium.

These micro-nutrients help unleash the energy stored in the food we eat, giving your child a great head start to the day.

Protomalt for Physical Activities

A mixed source of energy, PROTOMALT provides the carbohydrates necessary to fuel active kids.

Page 12: Milo

In addition to glucose and other simple sugars, up to 50% of the carbohydrates in PROTOMALT are in the form of oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. That means PROTOMALT malt extract is more complex than other carbohydrate sources such as refined sugars.
