A MESSAGE FROM MR. VEIT, PRINCIPAL
This month we celebrate two very important and very specialized areas of education, World Language and Mathematics. These very specific subject areas demand a very particular set of skills and require tremendous amounts of practice in order to gain mastery over them.
Our math teachers spend a tremendous amount of time assisting students in building the foundation skills necessary for future successes while teaching them the perseverance necessary in order to solve multi step and multi skill real world problems. Mrs. Kosko,
Mrs. Skolnick, Mrs. Herko, Ms. Imparato, Mrs. Linck, Mrs. Malta, Mrs. McCarthy, Mrs. Ostrov, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Wrate all deliver our students these strategies on a daily basis in their classes, and we thank them for their efforts.
Señora Cox provides our students with a platform to begin to develop the truly useful and unique skill of being bi-lingual. Mrs. Cox provides the groundwork for our students to understand the skills necessary to develop the ability to learn and use another language. If the students peruse Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin, or any other language in high
school or beyond, they can always refer to the strategies and skills cultivated in Mrs. Cox’s classes.
Thank you to all our teachers
of these two truly special areas of education!

Poison Prevention Week is March 16-22. More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to poison control centers across the country. More than 90% of these poisonings occur in the home. There are many valuable resources you can consult that review poisoning prevention tips. Some sites you can consult for further information are:
Njpies.org
Poisonprevention.org
Poisonhelp.hrsa.gov
Aapcc.org
If you think someone has been poisoned from a medicine or household chemical, call 1-800-222-1222 for your Poison Control Center. This national toll-free number works from anyplace in the United States: 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
Keep the number on your phone. It will connect you to a poison control center. There are currently 61 Poison Centers across the country that maintain information for the doctor or the public on recommended treat-ment for the ingestion of household products and medicines. They are familiar with the toxicity (how poisonous it is) of most substances found in the home or know how to find this information
The Drug Enforcement Administration and its national and community partners will hold their next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time at sites nationwide. This free, anonymous, no questions asked initiative prevents pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. It also addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
Location site information will be available after April 1.

If you are struggling, ASK FOR HELP
It is so important to always ask for assistance when struggling with school work, or with a social issue. Sometimes we don’t ask for help because we are shy, or embarrassed. It is important to remember
that as we get older it becomes our responsibility to speak up when we do not understand something, or if we are having trouble with friends. One way to help in this area is to have a “GO TO” person either in or out of school. It can be a favorite teacher, principal, counselor, coach, parent, relative, or sibling. Having a “GO TO” person when we need help academically or socially can help to either build a bridge between us and the person we really need to talk to, or they can directly help solve our problem.
How do you and your friends ask for help when you are struggling?
Who is your “GO TO” person in or out of school?

Study Tip #6
MR. VEIT’S MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY TIPS
Every month this school year, I will be posting a NEW study tip. Students that come to me to discuss the month’s study tip, and show evidence that they have used the study tip; will receive a Principal’s Achievement Certificate. More important than the certificate, those who use these strategies will develop good study habits that will assist them through high school, college, and beyond.

PRE-ALGEBRA 8
The marking periods have been zooming by, and we are actually nearing the end of our textbook. The last several chapters deal with all kinds of algebraic equations, graphing equations, slopes and intercepts, and linear functions. I know! It sounds so exciting!
I would just like to REMIND students and parents about the wonderful online textbook that is available every day, 24/7. All students were given their passwords back in September and instructions on how to access the online text. It offers many different ways to review lessons, take online quizzes, and view videos that explain areas that you may be having problems with. Please take this opportunity to help yourself… the more you practice, the easier it will become!

MATH 7
7th graders in Mrs. McCarthy's class have been exploring Khan Academy as an online resource to improve math skills and understanding. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and exciting! “Thanks!” to all the parents who helped
their children sign up. All of this is FREE! The students love the interactive features and competing to earn points and badges. The tutorials are great and provide a resource all the way through calculus in high school. An extra advantage is that as their coach, the teacher can oversee their mastery and needs as well as their time completed. As an extra advantage, students experience solving math problems using technology which will help prepare them for next year's PARCC testing.

¡Hola amigos y alumnos!
Hello friends and students!
Spanish students have been working on conversations in our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes. Dialogs are very important and we had some great ones created and presented
by our students. Fifth grade students completed a fun and entertaining unit on the theme of “pets and friends”. We really enjoy talking about our love for animals, family members, and friends! We are moving onto our next topic which is talking about the home. The students’ grammar, vocabulary, and language application is growing in leaps and bounds! Don’t forget to practice daily and reinforce your student’s appreciation for learning new languages.
I hope you continue to check my school Spanish website for assignments and helpful information. Students have been meeting each new academic challenge set before them in their Spanish classes with enthusiasm and determination. Rising to the challenge in their typical positive and energetic style, students are meeting or surpassing their goals!
Thank you to all the parents who are supportive of their students as they acquire the Spanish language. Also, thanks for your emails, questions, and comments. Remember, your questions and comments are very important to me. You can contact me to ask a question or just to say “Hola.”
Thanks for being my partner in your child’s education!
¡Bien hecho!
Sincerely, Señora Cox
