Michael Jordan’s Childhood
Michael Jordan was born in 1963 in the slums of Brooklyn, New York. He had 4 siblings and his father’s earnings were not
sufficient to provide for the whole family. He grew up in a poor neighbourhood. Exposed to mindless violence & heavy
discrimination in the slums, he saw for himself only a hopeless future.
His Father saw in Michael a lost soul and decided to do something. He gave Michael, who was a 13 year old, a piece of used
clothing & asked: “What do you think would be the value of this cloth?”
He replied: “May be 1$”
His father asked, “ Can you sell it for 2 dollars? If you can sell this for 2$ it would mean that you are a
great help to the family.”
Jordan nodded his head and said, “I’ll try, but no guarantee that I’ll be successful.”
Jordan carefully cleaned, washed, ironed and the next day he brought that cloth to a crowded underground station. After offering it
to the people the cloth for 6 long hours, Jordan finally managed to sell it for 2$.
After that incident, straight for the next 10 days, he made a sale of 2$ a day, i.e. 20$ in 10 days.
Now, his father told him, “Michael could you sell the same single cloth for 20$.”
Michael said: “ How is that even possible?”
Father said, “Why don’t you try it first? There might be a way.”
After breaking his head for 3 days, finally little Jordan got an idea.

Michael Jordan’s Childhood
Jordan asked his sibling to paint a picture of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on the Garment. Then he went to a school where
Children of the rich studied. Soon a housekeeper, who was there to pick up his master bought the outfit.
The master was a 10 year old boy who loved the outfit so much that he gave Jordan an extra 5$. So Jordan returned home happily
and gave that huge amount that was equivalent to his fathers monthly salary to his father.
Now his father gave him yet another piece of cloth and asked him, “Would you be able to sell it for 200$?”
Jordan’s eyes lit up, but without the slightest doubt he accepted the cloth.
2 Months later a popular movie actress from the movie “Chalie’s Angels”, named Farah Fawcett came to New York for her movie
promos. After the press conference, Jordan made his way through the security forces to reach the side of Farah Fawcett, requesting
her to give an autograph on the cloth. When Farah saw this innocent child asking for her autograph, she gladly signed it.
Now, Jordan started shouting loud, “ This is an exclusive Jersey signed by Miss Farah Fawcett, the selling price is 200$.”
Jordan managed to auction that Jersey for 1200$ in the year 1976.
Upon returning home his father broke into TEARS and Said, “ I am amazed that you did it My Child.”
That night Jordan slept alongside his father. His father said, “I just wanted to show you that a piece of cloth which is worth 1$ can
also be increased in Value. Then Why Not Us, We are livings and have an incredible asset named Brain.”
We may be poor, but what if WE CAN INCREASE our VALUE? This thought enlightened the young Jordan and today we know
him as the Greatest Basketball Player Of All Time.
