This is how the waterproofness of a fabric is measured. To measure the hydrostatic head of a fabric, a column of water is pressed against it and the height of the column is increased until the water penetrates the fabric. The rating is the height of the column at the point the fabric is penetrated. To be called waterproof a fabric must have a rating of least 1500mm.

Polycotton is a blend of cotton and polyester, combining the better qualities of each fabric into one. It is lighter and less bulky than a cotton tent, whilst being much more breathable than a polyester tent. The result is a more durable fabric that with care will last for years and is more suited to year round use. Polycotton tents do not carry a hydrostatic head rating as their waterproofness is caused by the fibres swelling when wet to keep the rain out.

Refers to the size of the product when packed into the carry case. Pack size is usually supplied in centimetres.

Different styles of tents can take more or less time to pitch. Pitch time denotes the average time it should take an experienced camper to erect the tent. Pitch time is always measure in minutes. The pitch times stated are to be used as guidelines.

Inflatable tents use robust, air-filled tubes in place of poles to provide a rigid structure with a quicker and easier pitching time. To erect you simply hook up a pump to the input valve and pump away. Some models require each tube to be inflated separately while some use an interlinked frame, meaning the entire tent pumps up at once.

Sleeping bags are given season ratings to help you determine which bag fits your purpose. Most sleeping bags are given a season rating somewhere inbetween such as 1-2, 2-3 or 3-4.

Down is the fine layer of fluffy feathers underneath the normal feathers on water fowl, usually ducks or geese.

Synthetic fill is a man-made equivalent to down made using lightweight polyfibres.

The weight of the tent is the total weight of all the components, including the flysheet, inner tents, tent poles and pegs, when packed away inside a carry bag. Weight is always supplied in either grams or kilograms.

Imagine you’re visiting your mum. Don’t trample the flowers, disturb the peace or leave toilet paper lying around.

FOLLOW THE PATH

Stay on established trails if you’re out hiking and where possible walk on rock. Likewise spread out and walk in a line so you don’t erode the soil.

MUDDLE ALONG

If you can avoid walking on muddy trails great. If not, step right through the mud, not round it, as it will erode the path. Your boots were made to get muddy anyway!

If there’s an established campsite where you’re going, stay there.

COOK SMART

Fires scorch the earth and can be dangerous. Pack a stove and cook on that – it’s safer and much more efficient.

Unless you pitch up in your back garden, wherever you put up your tent you’re a visitor. SLEEPING

SLEEPING - SELECTING THE RIGHT BAG

A basic rectangle shape with thick padding, sometimes known as a ‘Square’ shape. Ideal for summer use, this is a more spacious design for less restriction.

RECTANGULAR

The simplest method in which the shell and lining are stitched together through the insulation when viewed in cross section. This method creates colder spots at the seams, making it more suited to warm weather sleeping bags.

STITCH-THROUGH

The more complex method uses vertical walls of lightweight fabric or mesh that separate small quantities of insulation and keep it in place. Each individual chamber is called a baffle and there are a number of baffle techniques.

BOX WALL – the simplest method with straight vertical side walls.

V SYSTEM –each baffle wall is inclined at an angle to create a great number of baffles.

SLANT – each baffle wall is slanted to create a more difficult path for heat to escape.

OFFSET DOUBLE LAYER – a more advanced construction in which two box wall layers with seams in the middle are sewn on top of each other, creating a similar appearance to a brick wall.

BAFFLES

Known as such because it is shaped like an Egyptian mummy, wide at the top and tapering around the feet of the body. Snug fit, suited to colder weather, hood gives thermal protection, lightweight, ideal for backpackers and trekkers.

MUMMY

Down is a fine layer of fluffy feathers underneath the normal feathers of water fowl, usually ducks or geese. This natural insulation is warmer and more lightweight, but loses insulating properties if it gets wet.

A man made insulation created using polyfibres. It retains warmth when wet and is much easier to care for, although it is heavier and bulkier than down.

A seasonal rating helps you determine the recommended purpose of a sleeping bag. The rating is provided in numerical form ranging from 1 to 4. 1 season sleeping bags are more suited to warm summer nights with 4 season bags fit for colder winter nights in the outdoors. Most sleeping bags will have a rating somewhere in between, e.g. 2-3.

SLEEPING - CARE GUIDE

Washing a sleeping bag is easier than you may think. Here are some handy tips to help you get the best results. IMPORTANT: Check that your sleeping bag is suitable for machine washing (read the instructions carefully if it is suitable). Place two or three tennis balls in the machine with your bag. These will stop the stuffing from clumping together as it spins in the machine. NEVER add fabric softener as this will damage your sleeping bag. At the end of the wash, run the sleeping bag through another rinse cycle to remove all soapy residue.

Run a bath with cold water and add half a cup of mild fabric soap.

Zip the sleeping bag up fully and place it in the bath flat.

Empty the soapy bathwater, rinse the bath and refill with cold water.

Drain the bath and roll the sleeping bag up squeezing out as much water as possible.

NEVER wring or scrunch up your sleeping bag as this can damage the filling and cause it to clump together.

We recommend naturally drying the sleeping bag by unzipping it and hanging it on a washing line or airer.

Alternatively if you have access to a large tumble dryer you can use it to dry the sleeping bag on a low heat.

Tennis balls again should be used to stop the filling from clumping together.

TENTS - AFTER CARE

We recommend that you practice pitching your tent before any camping trip to check its condition and become acquainted with its design and assembly. Pitching at home gives you an opportunity to check that you have all the necessary components and that the tent is not damaged.

Moisture build up, if not managed correctly, can greatly affect the performance of your tent. Each evening whilst you sleep you sweat and breathe out approximately one cup of moisture. Opening the ventilation flaps on your tent allows air to circulate in the tent, removing any moisture that may condense.

Your pole is made up of a number of loose sections and an elasticated cord (often called shock cord). The shock cord runs from one end of the pole to the other through each section. It is simply knotted at either end to secure it in place.

How to repair the pole:

1. Measure the pole section that is to be replaced; it is likely the new pole section will need to be cut to length.

2. Cut the new section to the length required using a small hacksaw or similar tool. Sand or file the rough ends until they are smooth to avoid snagging on the tent fabric.

3. Untie or cut the knot in the shock cord at one end of the pole that needs to be replaced, remembering to keep a firm hold of it to avoid it recoiling into the pole.

4. Whilst holding onto the shock cord, remove the pole sections one at a time until you reach the section that needs to be replaced.

5. Still holding onto the shock cord, thread it back through the sections in the same order that they were removed. Tie a substantial knot (we recommend a figure of 8 knot) in the end to secure the poles in place.

6. The shock cord will stretch quite a bit and it is important that it is tight enough so that the poles stay together when inserting or removing them from the tent.

7. The shock cord length can be modified at any time to be as taught or as loose as desired.

Before packing your tent away, where possible open vents fully and leave the tent pitched until it is completely dry and free of condensation. If you are unable to dry or air your tent fully prior to packing it away, pitch the tent when you get home and allow it to dry fully. This will stop mildew developing inside your tent. Ensure your tent is as clean as possible. Sweep away any inner debris, dirt or crumbs and empty all internal pockets.

The best way to clean the flysheet fabric of a tent is by using a sponge, warm water and a natural mild soap. Do not use a detergent as these have an adverse effect on a tent’s waterproof properties. After cleaning your tent we strongly recommend that you use a quality proofer to restore the waterproof properties of your tent. We would also recommend using Nikwax Solarproof which will not only re-proof your tent by will guard it against UV rays which can significantly reduce the strength of your tent’s flysheet.
