M iller Furniture Company, until 2007 theoldest furniture store in Greensboro, openedin 1893 and moved into its fnal location on

Elm Street in the early 1930s. The businesssurvived the depression but not the changesin the furniture industry that followed. Thebuilding has been vacant since the currentowner, Quinn Miller, closed the doors on hisretail furniture operation.

the support system iscomprised of closely spaced

    columns and a wide wall.

    the existing buildingposes some problems

he building is actually two adjoined buildings.Te downstairs o thebuilding has solid tongue-

in groove maple oors.Columns are steel whichrest on granite and sup-port double I-beams.

The problem of limited natural light is solved by replacing existing small windows with

much larger ones and adding a large oval sky-light in the center of the building. An opening

is created under the skylight which extendsthrough all four oors so that most of the build -ing will receive natural light from the skylight.

The closely spaced columns are replaced with steel beams in order to install the skylight and allow for the large opening under it. The other bene t fromthis upgrade are fewer restrictions on where walls are

placed which allows for a more ef cient oor plan.

    evidence-based design

The design process used in the AIPM acility incorporated evidence-based design, thepractice o making design decisions based on the best available in ormation and practiceevaluations (Hill, p. 3). Roger Ulrichs report The Role of the Physical Environment in the Hospital for the 21st Century: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity was particularly use ul. In the reportUlrich Indicates ve key actors that are essential or the psychological well-being o patientsand their amilies:

Design elements incorporated in the plans that embody these principles include:

    (Hill, p. 4)

access to nature or views o the outdoorsharvested daylight

use o materials that evoke nature

provide access to naturereduce or eliminate environmental stressors

give a sense o controlprovide positive distractions

    provide social support spaces

Tara Rae Hill, ASID, rom the LittleFISH Think Tank, inher paper Using Color to Create He aling Environments ,provided in ormation which in uenced colorselections in the space. She says,

Evidence based design shows a strong correlationbetween healing and interiors that are stimulating-

spaces that are not overly neutral, have interestinguses o color, and use positive distractions that ocuson nature and color(p. 6).

...patients surrounded by vibrant surroundingsrecover three-quarters o a day aster, and needed

ewer pain medicationsthan those who did not (p. 7).

..colors previously considered too bright orhealth care settings, such as vibrant golds, citrusgreens, crimsons and Carribean blues are consideredtherapeutic tools that directly promote healing (p. 7).

hospital green is a thing o the past

Bold color, sinuous lines, liberal quantities o glass andthe juxtaposition o strongvertical and horizontalplanes are the elementswhich directed the designo the building. The largewindows combined withmultiple patio spaces blurthe boundaries betweenindoors and outdoors.Materials - concrete, steeland copper - providecontrast in both color andtexture. The patient entranceestablishes the tone o therest o the building with itsgarden, outdoor seating andcircular components.

Spaces are organized based on public and sta use, with the rst oor being themost public and the ourth the most private. There are two entrances to the building:

the patient entrance is on Elm Street and the sta entrance is on the alley parallelto it. The center o the building is open through all our oors with a large skylight

above the opening. Due to the act that most o the small rooms in the interior o thebuilding do not have access to natural light, clearstory windows on interior walls are

planned in order or them to bene t rom it. Curved lines are used throughout theplan to create movement and to avoid long, narrow hallways in spite o the multiple

small rooms required in the space.

psychologyEven be ore entering the building it is apparent that the design includes

necessary accommodations or the large percentage o the patient populationwith ambulatory issues. A covered outdoor area with seating is provided or

patients who need to wait or a driver to pick them up. Spacious pathwaysare allowed or wheelchairs and other mobility aids. Receptionists are able to

supervise any problems patients may encounter with clear views to the outdoorwaiting, indoor waiting and examination area rom their work space.
