Program Components

Introduction

In this tutorial, we will explore the program components of Miller & Levine Biology 2014.

First, we will examine the Student Edition and Teacher’s Edition. Next, we will look at the supplemental

components that support instruction. Finally, we will review Pearson Realize™ to see where digital

versions of the program resources are located.


Program Components


Student Edition

There are eight units and 35 chapters in the Student Edition, followed by the appendices and glossary.

The Table of Contents will show you which chapters are contained in each of the eight units.

Big Idea and Chapter Mystery

Each chapter is developed around a Big Idea and an Essential Question. The Big Idea is the unifying

theme across all of the lessons and activities for that chapter.

Each chapter opens with a Chapter Mystery that aligns to the Big Idea, and clues are provided

throughout the lessons. At the end of the chapter, students solve the mystery using the clues they have

collected.

Lesson Supports

In each lesson, a number of lesson supports are provided for students.

Key Questions are answered during the lesson wherever this icon appears.

The lesson vocabulary is called out for students through highlighted words in the text.

Students also receive note-taking suggestions to help them organize their thinking and become

independent learners.

The Diversity of Life Appendix

At the end of the Student Edition is a helpful resource called The Diversity of Life. This is a visual guide

to the phylogenetic relationships within the three domains of life. Students use it to explore and

understand the classification and characteristics of various organisms.

The Teacher’s Edition is a comprehensive resource that guides and supports your instruction.

Front Matter

The front matter information is identified by a green border on the edge of the pages. The beginning of

the Teacher’s Edition lists all of the program components for your reference.

You can find a list of labs and additional features at the end of the Table of Contents.

On page T23 you’ll find information specific to the Teacher’s Edition. Here you’ll find an overview of the

program, digital and inquiry resources, assessment and differentiation support, standards correlations,

and a lab materials list. Make sure to explore this section in detail before you begin instruction.

Chapter Planner

Let’s take a closer look at a chapter. At the beginning, you’ll find a Chapter Planner that points you to

the print and digital resources you’ll use for planning, teaching, and assessing students throughout the

chapter. You can find all of your online resources on Pearson Realize.

Look for the Big Idea and Chapter Mystery icons throughout the chapter to help students make

connections back to the Big Idea and Chapter Mystery.

Lesson Features

Each page of your Teacher’s Edition will include the corresponding page from the Student Edition. In

the border of each page, you will find point-of-use instructional resources and guidance.

The three phases of each lesson are Getting Started, Teach, and Assess and Remediate. Each section

contains detailed strategies for building scientific concepts and practices from what students know.

Look for these icons to make connections to the Next Generation Science Standards, or NGSS, and

the Common Core State Standards, or CCSS, if applicable.

Look for these icons to differentiate instruction as you teach. Substitute excerpts occasionally from the

Foundation Edition for students who struggle with reading.

Study Workbooks

Supplemental Study Workbooks provide additional support to build student understanding. Two

versions of the workbook are available.

Study Workbook A is an on-level resource that offers additional practice in the form of lesson reviews,

Chapter Mystery support, graphic organizers, and open-ended questions.

Study Workbook B is designed for below-level students. It includes more explicit support in the form of

scaffolding, concept maps, vocabulary support, and test-taking tips.

Use activities from both workbooks to best support your students’ needs.

Lab Manuals

Lab Manuals provide the procedures and worksheets for the 35 chapter labs. Two versions of the Lab

Manual are available.

The labs in Lab Manual A are intended for on-level students. Lab Manual A also offers 15 additional

labs.

The labs in Lab Manual B are written for students who need additional support. Lab Manual B also

offers a large selection of data analysis activities.

As a best practice, make sure that struggling students are regularly exposed to the on-level material in

both Study Workbook A and Lab Manual A.

ELL Handbook

The ELL Handbook is designed to help you scaffold and support instruction for your English Language

Learners, or ELLs. With this support, ELLs can learn in comprehensible and meaningful ways that build

on their own background knowledge.

Assessment Program

Throughout the program, you will find many opportunities for formative and summative assessment.

Each lesson, chapter, and unit ends with an assessment to monitor student understanding. The

questions are formatted to give students practice answering standardized and next-generation test

questions. You can find assessments in both print and online formats. Digital assessments are auto-

graded to save you time and provide class and student data to inform instruction.

Digital Resources

Your digital resources are housed online at Pearson Realize, where content and visuals come to life.

Pearson Realize Platform

On the Pearson Realize home page, select Miller & Levine Biology under Programs to get started.

The Table of Contents will show each chapter of the program, along with the supplemental resources.

Visit each chapter to see presentation resources, virtual activities, printable PDFs, and assessments to

assign students. For more details, please view the Digital Resources tutorial on

MyPearsonTraining.com.


Program Components


eText

To access your eText, a digital version of your print text, click eText in the top navigation bar. You can

then choose which eText you would like to view.

Your Teacher’s Edition eText mirrors each page of the print Teacher’s Edition but also allows you to

search for content, annotate, add bookmarks, and edit presentations.

Familiarize yourself with the navigation and annotation tools in the top toolbar. Change to whiteboard

mode if you would like to present eText material using an interactive whiteboard.

You can find digital versions of your supplemental materials, like Study Workbooks, labs, and

assessments, both in your eText and on the presentation platform. Also look to the program Table of

Contents and your chapter teacher resources for digital versions of your supplemental resources.

Editable presentations can be found in both places as well.
