Mr. Vickers’ Views:
As I sit down to write this month’s message, I just finished having “fine dining” with Ms. Page’s fifth grade class. That may sound pretty lofty and elegant, and I suppose in our own elementary school way, it actually is! You see, Ms. Page’s class followed Ms. McVeigh’s class as the second class to complete its first cycle of prolonged, consistent, positive lunch room behavior under our new cafeteria incentive program called Going for the Gold! We’ve configured some tables with new burgundy table cloths, battery-operated candles, and soft classical music to approximate the experience that you might find at a nice restaurant. As classes fill the behavior chart with thirty gold seals (representing thirty days of excellent cafeteria behavior), they earn the opportunity to eat lunch with one of the administrators in this special location. The kids are really enjoying this experience and so are Mr. Brazina, Ms. Veltri, and me. Please ask your kids if they have had “fine dining” at Mill Run yet?
I also want to draw your attention to a few of our favorite annual activities at Mill Run that are coming up over the next few weeks. Let’s start with our Book Character Dress-up Parade which is set for Monday, October 31st @ 1:30. Parents are invited to the gym to watch as each class parades around the building and through the gym in costumes that relate to a favorite character from a book of their choosing. The children should carry a copy of the book, but they must avoid scary costumes, toy weapons, and masks. Please send your child to school with the costume in a bag so s/he can get dressed in it at 1:00.
You will also wish to reserve some important dates for activities that will take place here at Mill Run during American Education Week (AEW), which runs from November 14th-18th. Some highlights will include our week-long book fair in the library, the fourth grade musical performance of Education Rocks on November 15th, and our annual turkey feasts on November 16th-18th. Within the next week, families will receive a complete brochure of the many exciting activities associated with AEW.
(con’t. on next page)
Finally, please don’t forget that our annual Family Heritage Festival and the Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event will take place on November 11th and 12th, respectively. We just added the world famous Chinese Acrobats as the grand finale to our student talent show at the Heritage Festival, so you really won’t want to miss it. Please consider coming in traditional garb that represents your family’s nation(s) of origin and bring a dish of food to share with our other guests. These events are great opportunities for your family to become further involved in Mill Run and to make a difference in our world. We hope to see all of you often during the upcoming weeks.
As always, I thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us. We recognize just how blessed we are to serve the Mill Run community and to work closely with your families.
Respectfully,Paul L. VickersPrincipal

Mr. Brazina’s Breaking News
Mill Run Elementary School is now Tweeting. You can 9ind us on Twitter @MillRunLCPS or at http://twitter.com/MillRunLCPS. We will use our Twitter account to send school reminders, to report on news and events, and to provide general school updates to the community. We are using this tool as another means to communicate with our parents. We hope you 9ind this useful in keeping current with events and happenings at Mill Run Elementary.
When Loudoun County experiences inclement weather conditions the safety of our students and staff is the most important consideration. In the event that weather or other reasons require either closing or delaying the opening of school, plan to receive up to the minute notification via e-mail, a cell phone call, or text message by register-
ing with Loudoun Alert. You may register for this free service by accessing the LCPS Closings and Delays page via the “site shortcuts” pull down menu on the Mill Run home
page. Parents have shared that often Loudoun Alert reported school closings before TV and radio stations began broadcasting the information. Please plan to use this valuable resource.

Counselor’s Corner
The “Character Word” for the month of November is Equality. Guidance lessons in the classroom will focus on Equality in the three major developmental skill areas: academic, social and career. We want to encourage group and individual responsibility for Equality. Academically, students will understand how Equality applies to doing their own work and having their own supplies. Socially, the students will understand the concept of Equality as it applies to friendships, conflict resolution, and expressing emotions. Career objectives include applying the concept of Equality to working cooperatively to meet goals and as a component of being a responsible citizen. Please ask your children to tell you about what they learned in their guidance lesson. The November Mountain Lion’s Pride Citizenship Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, November 3rd. A gentle reminder to parents, if you are unable to attend the Mountain Lion’s Pride breakfast when your child is receiving a reward, please let the guidance counselors and/or the classroom teacher know.
The Loudoun County Coalition will be providing services to families in need for Thanksgiving through InterFaith. Please contact the guidance counselors for more information as to days and times. Please feel free to contact your grade-level counselor at any time with your questions or concerns so that we may discuss them with you. It is our pleasure to be able to provide support and information to the students and families of Mill Run.

The Fourth Grade Musical !!
Mark your calendar for Mill Run Elementary’s
“Book Character Dress-Up Day” Monday, October 31st @ 1:30 p.m.
What is it? All month long, teachers will discuss story characters with their students. We are asking that each child choose a favorite character from a book and bring a costume (in a bag) which they will put on at 1:00 p.m. Most families will wish to have this costume be the same one that their children will wear at night (if they are intending to participate in “Trick-or-Treating”). What is isn’t: There will not be classroom parties associated with this celebration. Our focus is on sharing a favorite book character with our classmates! HERE’S THE PLAN: Each student will bring a copy of a book, or comic book, that includes the character they are representing. The book must be one that the child has either read or listened to an adult read. During the school day, they will discuss the character they’ve chosen with their classmates, and they will describe how they are similar and/or different from the character they are portraying. They must have the book with them (or a small poster of the book cover) because they will carry this during the parade @ 1:30. ARE THERE ANY RULES ABOUT THE COSTUMES? Yes! Children must not wear their costumes to school. They’ll dress into them @ 1:00 p.m. (Parent helpers in the K-2 classrooms are greatly appreciated!) No Masks may be worn! Nothing ghoulish or scary is acceptable. You may bring accessories (i.e.: a Honey Pot for Winnie the Pooh), but they cannot be toy weapons or any other object that might be considered threatening! Parents are invited to come to the “Book Character Parade” at 1:30 p.m. and sit on the bleachers in the gym. You’ll want to arrive by 1:15 p.m.. Bring your cameras, and enjoy! After the parade is over, parents must remember that they will need to sign their children out in the office if they intend to take them home. A.M. Kindergartners are welcome to return for the parade, as long as they are accompanied by their parents. Adults are encouraged to dress as their favorite book characters as well. Parents are encouraged to carpool or walk to the parade, if possible.
Tech News Bytes from the Technology Resource Teacher – Tricia Smith
Despite the pouring rain, students from the third grade classes at Mill Run fulfilled their field trip
journey in the game called: The Amazing Race. Using the Fast Forward pass, each team member had
to locate what direcGon the Jefferson Memorial was from the MarGn Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
When all team members saw the Jefferson Memorial, they had to stand facing the memorial and sing
any of the following: America, America the Beau=ful, or the Star-‐Spangled Banner. As each team
member recited the song, teachers recorded the groups using one of the seven Kodak PlaySport
video cameras that the PTO has purchased. Why use video cameras in an educaGonal secng? Well,
scienGfic research indicates using video in the classroom improves learning. Video is clearly an
instrucGonal medium that generates excitement. Using sight and sound, video is the perfect medium
for students who are auditory or visual learners. Video taps into emoGons which sGmulate and
enthrall students, and it provides an innovaGve and effecGve means for educators to address the
curricular concepts. Students from each class will have an opportunity to view their “Fast Forward”
videotaped task on the Promethean Board.
If due to a disability, you need assistance to enable you to meaningfully participate in any activities listed in this newsletter, please contact Mr. Vickers in the Mill Run office at (571)
252-2160 at least five working days prior to the event. if the event is not at Mill Run, he will direct you to the appropriate resource. Mill Run Elementary is dedicated to continuous
school improvement. A formal School Improvement Plan has been developed by staff, parents, and community members. The plan is reviewed on an ongoing basis. A copy is
available in the school office and the school library. You may also call us at (571) 252-2160 to have a copy sent home with your child. We welcome your input!

At Mill Run Elementary School, “Small Kids DO Make a BIG Difference!”On Saturday, November 12th from 3 -‐ 5:30 pm in the school gym, hundreds of students and their families will parGcipate in a Meal Packaging Event to benefit Stop Hunger Now, an internaKonal hunger-‐relief agency. There is a “World of Learning” in helping others, and even the smallest child will feel incredibly empowered using their OWN two hands to truly help others in such a meaningful way. We are aiming to raise $12,500 to enable our school family to package 50,000 meals to feed the hungry (visualize enough to feed every person in a large football stadium)!
A HUGE Thank YOU! We have raised $5,795 to Date! If you still have donations you intended to submit, please send by next Wed (11/12)
Attention Meal Packaging Volunteers:
We have over 350 volunteers already! Clearly our families are excited about making a difference together! The final amount we raise will determine the number of meals we are able to package. We are considering running the event in two shifts: 3-4:15 pm and 4:15-5:30 pm. This will be a last minute decision based on our numbers (total funds = # meals = how to plan volunteers). To all those who previously signed-up to help: Be on the lookout for this information via email from [email protected] on Thurs, Nov 10th. Last minute updates, if needed, will also be posted to the PTO, Community Cares section on our school website: http://cmsweb2.lcps.org/Page/54433Please wear a hat of some kind (ball or ski cap, bandana) to cover your head. Hair nets provided FREE for anyone who forgets Attendees may also choose to bring non-perishable food items to the event which will be donated to our local Food Bank. To see how your business, church or organization can also host a Meal Packaging Event, visit: www.stophungernow.org or Contact Dominic Alexander, Ashburn Program Director: 928-499-7222. Because of the overwhelming support in the greater Washington area, SHN is opening a NEW Distribution Warehouse right here in Ashburn, starting this month!

PTO NEWSHappy Fall!! I hope everyone enjoyed our 3rd Annual Mill Run Softball Game. Thank you to Sunny Trippel and the many volunteers who helped make this a fun, family event. Sunny, you knocked it out of the park!! Thank you to Christine Andretta for organizing the volunteers for this event and for the teachers and staff that assisted in making it such a success. I would like to recognize Natalia Almuhaya and Beth Zemcik for putting together a great variety of after school activities for our students. I would also like to thank Caroline Molthen and Melanie Kelly for organizing our first restaurant night at Fuddruckers. You did an awesome job!!
Yesterday I received my Sally Foster order in the mail. I was excited to get my wrapping paper for the holidays! Thank you to Stephanie Shur, Theresa Bishop, and Mary Pollack for running this successful fundraiser. We raised $10,000 for our school! Be on the lookout for our next fundraiser, The United Scrip Gift Card Program. With the holidays coming up, you can buy as many gift cards as you need to give as gifts, or to spend on your own shopping. Either way, our school benefits!!
I encourage every family to like Mill Run Elementary on their Facebook pages. Our PTO Treasurer, Jessica Chestnut, has done a wonderful job posting important information daily. Jessica works behind the scenes for the PTO managing our budget, and assisting the PTO Board in making the best financial decisions for our school. Thank you Jessica!! Finally, I hope everyone had fun at our Fall Movie Night. Thanks to Paul Miller and Jessica Chestnut from CiCi’s Pizza for providing yummy pizza.
I would like to thank everyone who has joined the PTO this year. Your dollars support the many activities at Mill Run throughout the school year. If you have not yet joined the PTO, please take a moment and download a form off of our website. We need your support! Sarah Qureshi has done a great job with our membership drive this year. If you have any questions about membership please contact her. Already this year, your PTO has purchased Think Fun Kits for the Search Department to use to enhance our children’s learning in the classroom. These games allow our Mill Run students to use their reasoning, logic, and problem solving skills in a fun way. We also paid for our first assembly of the year, Science Rocks. We have supported many classroom purchases that have been requested by our teachers. Our teachers are constantly looking for new, innovative ways to teach our children. These purchases would not be possible without your generous support of our events and fundraisers. We welcome all of our parents to attend our PTO meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in our Library at 2:45pm. Your children are welcome too. We are currently looking at ways to reach out to our working parents. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Christine Andretta, if you would like to volunteer at one of our events this year. Also, we have scheduled an evening meeting for Wednesday, February 15th at 7pm. Look for more details soon. I encourage all parents that are interested in getting involved to look on our PTO website at the many committees that we have. If you would be interested in helping at any capacity, please contact me.
I hope your children enjoyed participating in our Run to Stop Hunger event. I encourage you and your family to join our school on November 12th to help package meals for our Stop Hunger Now Campaign. Our Community Cares committee is helping to teach our children that small kids can make a difference.
Fondly,Andrea Ronk

School Bond Referendum November 8th - FACT SHEET
Loudoun County residents will be asked to vote on the method of funding the construction of four new schools and renovations to a current high school when they go to the polls on Tuesday, November 8th.
The projects to be voted upon include: two elementary schools (one in Moorefield Station and one in the Ashburn area), a middle school in the Ashburn area, a high school in the Ashburn area, and renovations at Park View High School.
The bond amount on the ballot is $169,620,000. These projects will appear as ES-16, ES-22, MS-6, and HS-8 on the ballot.
Why Is Funding Needed?Loudoun County Public Schools has been one of the fastest-growing school systems in America for more than a decade. In
1991, Loudoun County had 34 schools and 15,118 students. When school opened on August 29, 2011, LCPS will have 80 schools and an estimated 66,266 students.
According to the most recent Capital Improvements Plan adopted by the School Board and Board of Supervisors, enrollment in LCPS will be 69,323 students in 2012; 72,395 in 2013; and 75,011 in 2014.
Why Have Bonds Been Selected as the Method of Funding? The Board of Supervisors has selected general obligation bonds as the method of funding these projects for Loudoun County
Public Schools. General obligation bonds have historically been sold with a 20-year repayment schedule for construction projects. With these schedules, people moving into Loudoun will help pay for the schools that will be built for the county’s increasing school population.
People ask, “What will happen if the school referendums are not approved?”If the bond referendum is not approved, the Board of Supervisors must find other means of funding the construction of this
school.

listed in the year they were opened):

Please Label Jackets
Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, please make sure to write your children’s names inside their jackets. You would be
surprised how many jackets are left at school each year and never reclaimed. At the
end of each year, we wash our lost and found items and give them to charity. We always check for identification labels and return them to the appropriate children first.
Please remember that you can find our Lost and Found on the green shelves outside of the school cafeteria.
