After a very mild winter, we certainly have had a beautiful early spring with just the right amount of precipitation and plenty of opportunities for our children to get outside and play. In fact, Mr. Brazina, Ms. Veltri, and I had terriBic weather as we drove around during TV Turnoff Week in April, and we caught record numbers of kids who were enjoying the lovely weather. Many of the kids were doing their homework out in the elements. This might just be a great remedy for you to try with your children if they are hesitant or reluctant about completing their homework each afternoon. Sometimes, a change of scenery or a break in the routine is enough to breathe new life into what might otherwise be hard for our children. At Mill Run, we pride ourselves on our openness! All of our staff members were speciBically selected for their love of children and for their ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing. In short, we love seeing our parents in our building and are so grateful for the support that we receive from our families. I would request that all visitors to Mill Run please respect the instructional time that our teachers have with your children, though. Please remember that teachers plan their lessons and units with speciBic timeframes in mind: the timeframes that are necessary to complete their lessons with your children. We ask that parents please remember to signin at the ofBice and to avoid impromptu “popins” during instructional times. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, via email or phone call, and our professional staff will get back to you promptly. Thanks so much for your dedication, support, and understanding. Moving ahead, we have many great opportunities for you to visit school and participate in your child(ren)’s educational programs. Please pay particular attention to the last week of May and the Birst week of June in the “AtaGlance” section that adorns the front page of this newsletter. Also, please look for the Parent Input Forms for class placement to be sent home with your children at the end of the Birst week of May.

Mr. Brazina’s Breaking News

I  also  want  to  thank  you  and  our  terriBic  PTO  for  supporting  Mill  Run’s  iPad  initiative.    In  just  one  month,  we  were  able  to  secure  the  funding  for  a  complete  classroom  set  of  30  iPads  and  the  necessary  peripherals  to  enrich  and  enhance  our  instructional  program.    The  hardware  has   now   been  ordered,   and   it   is  our  hope  that  we  can  get  the  iPads  into  the  hands  of  our  Bifth  graders  before  they  head  off  for  the  summer  and  on  to  middle  school.    Stay   tuned  to  learn  how  these  tools  will  be   integrated  into  the   learning  of  every  Mill   Run  child,  beginning  in  the  fall!

I  look  forward  to  seeing  all  of  you  soon!    Serving  as  the  principal  of  this  great  school  for  these  past  12-‐years  is  one  of  my  greatest  blessings.    I  look  forward  to  many  more  to  come!

With  utmost  respect,

Paul L. Vickers

Standards of Learning (SOL) – Online Testing

For the past several years, most middle schools and high schools in Virginia have administered the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments online, rather than as paper-and-pencil tests. Online testing is now also being adopted as the preferred method to administer SOL assessments in the elementary grades. SOL testing is scheduled for May 7th through June 1st for students in grades 3-5 in Loudoun County Public Schools, with each school setting their own schedule within that period. Please see the Mill Run calendar located on the main page for specific testing dates. During May/June 2012, all students in grades 3-5 will be administered their SOL assessments as online tests, unless it would be in the child’s best interest to instead take paper-and-pencil tests. The Virginia Department of Education has conducted numerous studies to ensure that the online tests are comparable to paper-and-pencil tests. That is, students would earn approximately the same score, regardless of whether they took the test on a computer or with paper-and-pencil. Students will have a number of different training experiences prior to actually taking an SOL test online.

Velt!’s V"ion

By: Ma!sa Velt!, Admin"trative Intern

Congratulations to Mill Run’s April Super Citizens!!Each month teachers select one student from their class who has demonstrated character traits that are

consistent with creating a respectful and caring school climate.

Is  it  already  May?    This,  to  me,  is  so  hard  to  believe!    As  Mr.  Vickers  and  I  drove  around  one  afternoon  last  month  in  the  Paw-‐Patrol  for  turn  off  your  TV  week,  I  can  remember  saying  to  him  how  fast  this  school  year  has  just  gone  by…and  it  truly  has!    Summer  will  soon  be  here  and  we  will  be  enjoying  the  pool,  playing  outside,  having  picnics,  and  going  on  family  vacations!

Please  remember  to  continue  looking  inside  of  your  child(s)  yellow  Thursday  envelope,  as  well  as,  checking  the  Calendar  of  Events  on  Mill  Run’s  webpage  for  more  information.    Staying  connected  is  a  very  important  part  of  your  child(s)  education!

On  another  note,  our  lunch  incentive  program,  “Going  for  the  Gold,”  continues  to  be  a  hit!    Many  classes  have  been  able  to  enjoy  lunch  with  Mr.  Vickers,  Mr.  Brazina,  and  myself.    In  order  to  earn  Bine  dining,  classes  must  earn  30  “golden  paw  stickers”  in  the  cafeteria  for  good  behavior.    The  following  classes  have  recently  earned  “Bine  dining:”

      Ms.  Powers  –  grade  1       Ms.  Skutch/Rock  –  grade  4       Ms.  Holmes  –  grade  1     Ms.  Cash  –  grade  4       Ms.  McIntosh  –  grade  1     Ms.  Haggerty  –  grade  4       Ms.  McVeigh  –  grade  1     Ms.  VanPatten  –  grade  5       Ms.  Sovereign  –  grade  3     Ms.  Williams  –  grade  5       Ms.  Kretzler  –  grade  3     Ms.  Page  –  grade  5       Ms.  Beck  –  grade  4       Ms.  Johnston  –  grade  5

Great  job  to  all  of  our  classes  who  have  earned  “Bine  dining!”    Keep  up  the  good  work!

Counselor’s Corner

Absentee Phone Line

If your child is absent for any reason, please make sure to call the Mill Run Absentee Phone Line, (571) 252-2162, on the day or days your child is not in school. When possible, we would like to receive

your call before our work day begins at 7:30 am. Also, please call the absentee number if your child will be tardy that day to prevent a

phone call having to be made home. The absentee phone line is available for your use 24 hours a day, everyday. You can also save time and email us about your child’s

absence! [email protected]

The “Character Word” for the month of May is Citizenship. Guidance lessons in the classroom will focus on group and individual responsibility for citizenship. Citizenship involves following the rules and doing their part to ensure their own safety and that of others. Please ask your children to tell you about what they learned in their guidance lesson.

The next Mountain Lion Pride Breakfast will be on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.

Parents, please be sure to have your children in bed on time (the earlier the better) during the SOL testing time. The extra sleep combined with a little daily exercise and a healthy breakfast will help your child to feel awake and energized during the testing.

Fifth Grade Transition Info: 5th gr. Students will visit Eagle Ridge Middle School on Tuesday, May 1st

The last day to turn in applications for Bridge to the Ridge is May 1st

Please feel free to contact your grade-level counselor at any time with your questions or concerns so that we may discuss them with you. It is our pleasure to be able to provide support and information to the students and families of Mill Run.

For ALL your generosity & kindness to support the Food Drive & Clothes Collection in April!

With your help, our school collected approximately 700 food items filling over 50 boxes that was donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief to restock shelves & help supplement summer feeding program. Children got to also climb aboard Mobile
