Troops In Afghanistan:So Far This Year, 403 International

Service Members, Including At Least 299Americans, Have Been Killed

Aug 30, 2011 By Deb Riechmann - The Associated Press [Excerpts]

KABUL, Afghanistan August has become the deadliest month yet for U.S. forces inthe nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, increasing pressure on the Obamaadministration to bring troops home sooner rather than later.

The 66 U.S. service members killed this month eclipses the previous record of 65 killedin July 2010, according to an Associated Press tally. Nearly half the August deathsoccurred when insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter Aug. 6, killing 30 Americantroops, mostly elite Navy SEALs.

Violence is being reported across Afghanistan despite the U.S.-led coalitions drive torout insurgents from their strongholds in the south.

Though American military officials predicted high casualties this summer as theTaliban try to come back after recent offensives, the grim milestone increasespressure on the Obama administration to withdraw U.S. forces quickly.

Aside from the 30 Americans killed in the Chinook crash southwest of Kabul, 23 died thismonth in Kandahar and Helmand provinces in southern Afghanistan, the main focus ofAfghan and U.S.-led coalition forces.

The remaining 13 were killed in eastern Afghanistan.

Besides the 66 Americans killed so far this month, the NATO coalition suffered the lossof 14 other troops: two British, four French, one New Zealander, one Australian, onePolish and five others whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed.

So far this year, 403 international service members, including at least 299 Americans,

    have been killed in Afghanistan.

    LIBYA WAR REPORTS

One Thing Is Certain: The PeopleAre By No Means Passive, And AreNot In The Mood To Exchange One

Tyranny With AnotherWhy The CIA Would Have Plotted To

    Get Rid Of Qaddafi I Dont Know;

Qaddafi Was Not Only Selling Oil ToWestern Companies, He Was Torturing

    Rendered Islamists On AmericasBehalf

    Aug 30, 2011 by Robin Yassin-Kassab,Pulsemedia.org

Somebody said to me recently, The Libyans will soon be doing business with Israel, whether they like it or not.

Here we go again: the assumption that the Libyans have no agency of their own, evenafter theyve so dramatically taken the initiative to change the course of their own history.

Yes, Libyans took help from NATO, Qatar, and the UAE when they found themselveswith no other option.

This doesnt mean they are fated to be slaves of the West. Even Iraq doesnt dobusiness with Israel, and Iraq has suffered a full-scale US occupation.

Such easy assumptions about the Libyan people arise from racism, usually of theunconscious, well-meaning variety.

This racism consists, first, of indifference to the peoples plight under Qaddafi, oroutright denial of their plight.

The rose-tinted view of life under the dictator is reminiscent of the Zionists who assureus that Gaza has swimming pools and shopping malls and that Palestinian Israelis livebetter than any other Arabs.

    11/19

The rush to highlight the crimes of the revolutionaries (sometimes relying on Qaddafiregime propaganda) is accompanied by silence over the far greater crimes of the quasi-fascist tyranny.

Libyans (and, to a degree, Syrians) are seen as passive tools in the hands of thedevilishly clever White man, as childlike people who dont know their own best

interests, as people best advised to shut up and enjoy being tortured for the sakeof the greater anti-imperialist good.

The right of the Libyans to life and freedom, and to make their own decisions, becomesless important than the right of certain people to feel self-righteous.

Many anti-Libyan commentators have felt free to make sweeping predictions about Libyaand the Libyans without actually possessing any knowledge of the people or the country.

Where now are those voices who a few weeks ago predicted so confidently the divisionof Libya into east and west?

Or who informed us that the uprising against the tyrant was in fact a tribal civil war?

Or that Tripoli would never fall because Qaddafi had so much popular support there?

How do these people explain the almost immediate surrender of Qaddafis securityforces as soon as the revolutionaries arrived in the capital, or the fact that revolutionariesrose within the capital to greet their brothers arriving from beyond, or the masscelebrations in almost every neighbourhood as soon as it became safe to express realemotions?

Beyond racism, exaggerated conspiratorial overgeneralisations are a symptom ofperceived impotence.

Some believe that the CIA (or whoever) is behind not only the revolutions in Libya (whythe CIA would have plotted to get rid of Qaddafi I dont know; Qaddafi was not onlyselling oil to Western companies, he was torturing rendered Islamists on Americasbehalf and controlling cross-Mediterranean migration for the EUs sake) and Syria, buteven in Tunisia and Egypt.

Such theorists believe, whether they admit it or not, that change through politicalaction is an impossibilty, that mass mobilisations, and the courage to take onarmed goons with empty hands and bare chests, cannot be real.

The logical correlation of this belief is that the sole purpose of the left is to whine about

the state of the world, but never to actually change anything.

At the start of the 20th Century the left could have been criticised for underestimating thedifficulty of establishing a fairer society; at the start of the 21st Century, sections of theleft, particularly the Western left, must be criticised for the opposite.

Libyans will certainly do business with the West, just as Qaddafi did before.

  • 8/4/2019 Military Resistance 9H22 the Butchers Bill[1]

    12/19

Libya needs to sell oil to make its economy work and to build the infrastructure thatQaddafi failed to build.

(If Libyans require advanced medical treatment, they go to Tunisia a much poorercountry).

Libyans will no doubt prefer to do business with the Western countries that gave themsupport than with such powers as Russia, which gave succor to their oppressors.

If Libyans are in the driving seat, making their own decisions, this is fine. Yetcertainly the danger exists that in their gratitude and amid the current chaosLibyan officials will make too many concessions to Western power.

Britain, France and others will be working hard behind the scenes to ensure suchan outcome, and the Libyans should be very wary.

Many of the first signs out of post-Qaddafi Libya are good.

Although the Transitional Council has failed to make a strong statement against racistattacks on African migrant workers (by people who accuse every single foreigner ofbeing a mercenary), and although Mustafa Abdul-Jalil has unwisely called for continuedNATO action (until Qaddafi is captured and his remaining forces neutralised),Transitional Council officials have made clear that Libyan citizens (such as Megrahi) willnot be handed over to the West.

More significantly, protests have erupted in Misrata against the Transitional Councilsappointment of an ex-Qaddafi official to a security position in Tripoli.

Much of the Council is made up of old regime personalities. The challenge now will be todeepen the revolution while keeping the people as unified as possible.

Like Tunisia and Egypt, Libya is in the early stages of its revolution.

One thing is certain: the people are by no means passive, and are not in the mood toexchange one tyranny with another.

Refuses To Allow Foreign ProtectionForce Or Military Observers

But a key element of a proposed United Nations plan for Libya drawn up by Ian Martinhas already been roundly rejected by Libya's interim leaders.

The BBC reports that Mr. Martin, tasked with drawing up the UN's post-conflict plans, said after a meeting with the UN Security Council yesterday that Libya's interim rulers

have ruled out the deployment of any sort of international force to the country.

Martin's original plan for Libya imagined up to 200 unarmed military observers plus an"interim protection force" for the observers, if the Libyans agreed.

That agreement hasn't been forthcoming. Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya's deputyrepresentative to the UN, told the BBC that there is no need for deploying peacekeepers.

"It is not a civil war, it is not a conflict between two parties, it is the people who aredefending themselves against the dictatorship," he said.
