25th Anniversary Year of Mililani’s All America City Award
Dear Friends,
The Legislature is entering the final days of the 2012
session. Bills that have passed both Houses, and are not
in agreement will go to conference committees for reso-
lution.
The second crossover day found House members debat-
ing legislation for over 10 hours. Debate was civil, and
demonstrates the strength of the Democratic process.
The Budget has crossed over from the Senate to the
House and will also be a part of the conference delibera-
tions. Budget conference is now proceeding.
Thank you for the input and guidance many of you have
provided on a number of issues. Your calls, emails, and
letters mean a lot.
We will be providing a complete session report shortly
after the end of session “Sine Die” on May 3.
Aloha,
Representative, 38th District
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND SEXUAL
ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
Prevent Child Abuse Hawai’i, the Department of Health, and
the Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council sponsored a
pinwheel display at the Hawai’i State Capitol to help bring
attention to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in Ha-
waii. Current reports show that each year nearly 6,000 sus-
pected cases of child abuse are reported in Hawai’i. Each pin-
wheel planted at the Capitol symbolizes one reported case of
child abuse in Hawai’i. For more information on Child Abuse
Prevention Month and Pinwheels for Prevention, please visit
preventchildabusehawaii.org.
April is also Sexual Assault Awareness month. Nearly one in
five women and one in 71 men become the victims of sexual
assault nationwide. Sexual Assault Awareness month is an
annual campaign to raise public awareness about sexual as-
sault and educate communities and individuals on how to
prevent sexual violence. For more information please visit
the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Hawaii’s website at
satchhawaii.com
Kelly Suzuka, Tate Carpenter, and Lee Ying Kwok of my staff plant pin-
wheels as part of the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign.
Paul’s Electric is installing construction advisory signs and
is set to begin work to rewire the lighting on the H-2 free-
way. The rewiring project is anticipated to be completed
this summer.

Kata Issari, Hawaii Regional Director of the Joyful Heart
Foundation is my guest for the next episode of Kukui Con-
nection. The Joyful Heart Foundation was started by
Mariska Hargitay, who plays Detective Olivia Benson on
NBC’s “Law and Order SVU.” The mission of the Joyful
Heart Foundation is to heal, educate, and empower survivors
of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse and to
shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues. My
interview with Ms. Issari will air on April 20 at 8:30 pm and
on April 22 and 29 at 4 pm on Olelo Channel 54.
KUKUI CONNECTION
The Women’s Legislative Caucus collected and donated over 100 Easter Bas-
kets filled with essential items for guests of the Institute for Human Services
(IHS.) Last year’s theme, “Welcome Home Easter Baskets,” which helped in-
dividuals start off on the right foot when moving from being homeless to hav-
ing permanent homes, was so successful that the theme was continued this
year. The Easter Basket Drive, which began in March, concluded on April 5
when IHS came to pickup the baskets.

MHS FIELD TURF UPDATE
Work is rapidly proceeding on the new artificial turf at
Mililani High School’s John Kauinana Stadium. This
project was made possible by an appropriation of over
1.5 million dollars from the State Legislators in the
Mililani District. The health and safety of our students
made this improvement a priority.
MILILANI ROAD REPAIRS ARE
ON THE WAY
The City has informed me that relief is
in sight for residents who travel on
many of the local streets in Mililani.
Approximately 100 of the intercon-
necting streets will be paved begin-
ning this summer.
Meheula Parkway and Anania Drive
will need major reconstruction due to
wear from the heavy volume of traffic.
Rehabilitation projects for these two
roadways are in the planning stage
with design to follow this summer.
Construction on these projects are esti-
mated to begin in early 2013.
Last year the legislature appropriated
14 million dollars to rehabilitate
Kamehameha highway from Mele-
manu Park to Ka Uka Boulevard. The
Department of Transportation (DOT)
is currently working on its design for
the project. Mililani Legislators have
asked the (DOT) to do emergency re-
surfacing work to make the roads
smoother until the real rehabilitation
project begins.
