I found it no prob-lem to hover around 60mpg inrelatively traffic-free driving.Alright, you do need to putsome effort in, but the poten-

tial is there. The dinky engineis perfect for chopping aroundurban and suburban routes.It’s impressively linear oncethe turbo kicks in, making itsmooth, forgiving and easy toget used to. It warms up fasterthan amoth on a sunbed andit’s perfect for no-fuss shorttrips. The five-speed gearbox islight and precise, with tallgearing that partly offsets thelack of a sixth, but it’s clearthis version isn’t meant tocover seriousmotorwaymile-age. Vauxhall dealers are usu-ally open to a little haggling,too, so don’t take the retailprice as gospel.
