Before I write to you about the final play I would like to tell you about the process of how that final event came together. When Archana Bua and I decided to do another play our first plan of action was to find actresses. So, Archana, Akunkshar and I began auditioning the girls at the orphanage. It was not an easy thing to do as none of the children seemed to have acted before and many of them were extremely shy. When we finally figured out who would play what character, daily practices began. For a long time the children were just saying their lines on stage. Some would turn their backs at the audience, others speak barely above a whisper, they would stay stone faced, and some just did not know theatre edict. I remember a very frustrating day when one of the main leads decided she had enough and left the stage in the middle of play practice! And sometimes kids would just disappear! Where is the Karigar? Where is the Kaloo? Where is Rupa and Bitto? Were among the common questions. Although we never perfected keeping children in one place, slowly whispers became audible, no backs were turning on the audience, expressions were made, and the actresses we had been searching for appeared! One child in particular stands out in my mind; Neetu Singh. Neetu was one of the main leads who played the Priest. When she first tried to read the script she had a lot of trouble pronouncing the pure Hindi. This was a concern and we discussed replacing her with someone else. There was so much disappointment in her eyes when we told her that she was going to be replaced we decided to give her a second chance. Not long after Neetu had her lines down before anyone else did, was always waiting first for play practice to begin, and made an extra special effort to imitate an old priest with a slight cough and bad back. After the final play she gave me a kiss on the cheek and was trying to tell me how happy she was! As were all! I was backstage when our actresses came off and they were beaming. I never saw them so proud of themselves - For many, they were able to shine in the spot light as individuals for the first time. They also worked together as a team to make this play happen. Not that this surprised me as they are always helping each other out. Sometimes I think how sad it must be to live in an orphanage day in and day out. But, for the most part these children take such good care of each other. Even Bitto, the smallest of all the children at age 5 will try to take care of children older to her. There is such a community of sisterhood there, it's truly remarkable. The actual play I felt was a huge success. The girls gave it their best shot and had so much fun doing it for all the people who came out to support them. You can not have true theatre if you don't have an audience. And what an audience it was! How nice it was to see that people were enjoying being there! And how nice it was to see all the gifts, icecream, snacks the audience members gave all the children received after the production! My friend told me later how touched she was that the girls sang to her Happy Birthday and even more touched that on their own initiative came up to her and wished her a Happy Birthday! Even though they don't have much, these girls really give so much, it's hard to reciprocate. I find it hard to finish this as there are so many moments I would love to dwell on. So many people came together to make this play possible and with out their help it would have been impossible to make it as special as it was. For many, September 11th is a solemn day of remembrance for those who perished in the airplanes and twin towers. Now, this day that was once full of death and tragedy can be balanced with an event that gave so much meaning and life to these girls. Thank you Rtn Archana Khaitan for putting hours of effort into everything and (with such patience!), and Ann Manju Agarwal for coming to the rescue and putting in the time to help translate and making sure that everything was in place, and Rotary Club members for the beautiful flowers and for all of your support in making this event possible! 9th September was a fun evening with RCKG sweeping the opponents off their feet. JCI Kanpur Industrial had organized an Inter Club Quiz at Ragendra Swaroop Auditorium in which RCKG came out with flying colours. The team comprising Ann Kiran Agarwal, Rtn Niraj Prasad, Rtn. Rishi Kapoor & Rtn. Prahlad Sutwala had answers to everything be it music, sports or current affairs. It was a wonderful joint effort and RCKG was a clear winner. The Rtns and Anns cheered the team and kept their spirits high till the end.

17th September was the day for the board meeting where important issues were taken up and reports by various PDs of Balgrah, TB Clinic, Pacemaker were put forth.

29th September was business combined with fun. The occasion was the second general meeting of RCKG at Turnip Restaurant. The activities of September were reviewed and plans were made for October. The General Meeting was followed by fellowship. The Anns had organized one minute games like : Chopsticks and Gems, Sari Wrapping, Balloon Blowing, Book Balancing, Catwalk and Musical Chairs. All the members participated in the games and had fun. The highlight of the evening was the return of Rtn Kanwarpreet back from USA. The PDs of the evening Ann Madhu Kanodia, Ann Sandhya Mohla, Ann Neha Kapoor and Ann Manisha Chowdhary did a commendable job for making the evening entertaining and fun.

23rd October, another occasion to look forward to was the Diwali Meet at Rose Bank on 22nd October. The Diwali Meet this time was Traditional, all the Rotarians and Anns and Annets were all dressed in their Sunday best. It was an event that could get RCKG on Page-3. All the Rotarians were looking dapper and the Anns belles of the ball. Everyone made a beeline for the photo shoot and got lost in reminisces of their youth. There were cards and the gossip tables ready for everyone. Some Rotarians were seen languishing Nawabi style on the gaddas. Annets had lots of fun and frolic playing very interesting games organized by Ann Aparna Kejriwal. Food was awesome with lovely starters and fabulous dinner. Rabri and Jalebi completed the evening. Best dressed awards went to our young and dashing Rtn Anil Agarwal and our elegant Ann Anu Gupta and our very smart Annet Neha Tandon. The grand success of the programme was due to the dedicated effort of the PDs. Rtn Ashok and Ann Belu Seth, Rtn Arvind and Ann Meenakshi, Rtn Subhash and Ann Rekha, and special thanks to Ann Aparna Kejriwal for entertaining the Annets and last but not the least special thanks to the Ann Wing, Ann Sobby, Ann Madhu and Ann Sandhya.
