1986 PULL

This year's Pull almost became the fourth Pull to be cancelled due to rain. Luckily it was just rescheduled one day later, Saturday, September 27. The 89th annual "Tug of War" was won by the sophomore class, (89). Repeating the perfor-mance of the class of 84, the sophomore class remains unbeaten in Pull, with two straight victories.

In 1977, the Pull lasted a very long three hours and fifty-one minutes before judges declared it a tie due to darkness. (The least amount of time needed for a Pull victory was in 1956, a quick two and one half minutes.) Because of the rules limiting the length of time for the Pull, implemented after the 1977 marathon, a time limit was set at three hours for the contest. The Pull, for the third year in a row, lasted its allotted time of three hours. After the time is up the judges measure the rope to determine the winning class. Upon measuring the length, the sophomores were found to be 64 inches to the good, and thus the victors.

T h e f r e s h m e n a n d sophomore teams, consisting of 18 men and women plus alternatives, are coached by juniors and seniors. These up-perclassmen were "Pullers" previously. The coaches for the 1990 freshmen team were Todd Claypool, Mike Bey, Craig Sharp, Kurtis Kossen, Doris Niehof, Heidi Clark, and Hope Joyce. The 1989 sophomore coaches were John Beyer, Scott Voet, Craig Peter-son, Rodney Brush, Jill Man-non, Susan Kunkle, and Terri Henry.

NYKERK The tradition of Nykerk con-tinued this year between the Freshman Class of 1990 and the Sophomore Class of 1989. The Freshmen opened the evening with their rendition of the "Theme from New York, New York." The Sophomore Orator, Elizabeth Veldink, then spoke about the phrase, '"Tis a Gift to be Simple, 'Tis a Gift to be Free." After this the Freshmen put on the play "The Frog Prince." Following inter-mission the Sophomores sang "Let the Sunshine In." They performed the play "Winnie-the-Pooh" after the Freshman Orator, Jennifer Haskin, gave her version of '"Tis a Gift to be Simple, 'Tis a Gift to be Free." As the judges left you could feel the tension in the air. The participants spent three short weeks preparing for thi:; even-ing with the help of their coaches and morale guys. The judges returned after a short while and Jill Mannor the general chairperson announc-ed that the Freshmen class of 1990 had won!!!

VESPERS This year marked the 46th an-nual Christmas Vespers services. Vespers featured over 200 students who participate in Hope College Chorus and Chapel Choir, directed by Prof. Roger Rietberg; the Symphonette, directed by Dr. Robert Ritsema; and the Brass Ensemble, con-ducted by Prof. Russell Floyd.

The services were all well at-tended by students, faculty, ad-ministration, and the community. The music was well prepared and filled the chapel and all those who attended with the warmth and love of the Christmas Spirit.

AWARENESS DAY

Awareness Day is a newer tradition at Hope. It gives students and faculty the opportunity to experience what it is like to be "handicapped." Students and faculty who wish to participate are put in simulations of being visually impaired, mobility im-paired, and hearing impaired. They are also given the chance to see and use different instruments that the impaired use. It is a great chance to see how other people live and work.

PRESIDENT FORD CONVOCATION

On April 24 President Ford was given an honorary degree Doctor of Laws. President Ford spent most of his early life in Grand Rapids, Mich. He graduated from the University of Michigan and then went on to Yale Law School. He began his national political career in 1949 as a Congressman for Michigan's Fifth District. He was a member of the House of Representatives and was the House Republican minority leader. After thirteen terms in the House, he became the first U.S. President to take of-fice without being elected.

GOLF The Hope College Goli Team captured the MIAA goll cham-pionship this year. It is only the third such title for the Dutchmen. The last time it was won was in 1947. This remarkable team finished 64 strokes ahead of run-nerup Calvin. The Flying Dutch also received an invitation to compete in the NCAA Division III national championship tourna-ment in May. This is only the se-cond MIAA team in history to receive such an invitation. CON-GRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK!!!

President Van Wylen feels his greatest accomplishment has been to help clarify the mission of the coUege. The mission of Hope CoUege is "to offer with recognized ex-cellence, academic programs in liberal arts, in the setting of a residential undergraduate, coeducational college, and in the context of the Christian faith." He worked to bring the people and resources to fulfill this mission of excellence.

President Van Wylen was able to put the highlights of his career at Hope into three categories as follows:

1. His relationships with students, associates, faculty, trustees, and alumni have been enriched.

2. He has given leadership to the school and helped to enhance the reputation of the school. He has also brought many financial resources to the school to help build it. President Van Wylen says, "It has been fun to see the campus take shape physically."

3. He has grown as a person, in his relationships, and by doing things, all of which have been enriched by the Christian faith.

ART Contacts with visiting artists and lecturers of na-

tional importance, field trips to museums such as those in Chicago, Detroit, and Toledo, exhibition ex-perience in the College Gallery, and entrance in com-petitive shows are a few of the opportunities available through the Art Department. Course offerings are structured in form, content, and sequence to provide a foundation in the fine arts for both the pre-professionally oriented student and the liberal arts student. The curriculum affords opportunities for study and creative work in the visual arts through studio practice and art history. The Department of Art fac-ulty members are teaching, producing, and research oriented artists and art historians.

Research projects are the name of the game in the Biology Department. Examples include breeding bi-ology of the Common Morrhen, temperature regu-lation and thirst of rats, systematics and ecology of spiders, host-parasite relationships of trematodes, sys-tematics of Compositae, water and ion regulation in protozoa, environmental mutagenesis and carcino-genesis, and morphology and anatomy of fossil plants. The Department has excellent facilities for both teaching and research and a well-stocked li-brary. Qualified students have the opportunity to spend a semester doing research and taking courses at the Oak Ridge National laboratory in Tennessee.

CHEMISTRY The chemistry program provides students with a

rigorous introduction to the field of chemistry in a setting that is complete with knowledge of current developments in chemistry and experience with mod-em instruments and laboratory techniques. The pro-gram offers students the opportunity to achieve out-standing levels of accomplishment through the challenge of chemical research. The chemistry faculty maintains a keen interest in students' professional involvement and scholarly development. The chem-istry program places a strong emphasis on faculty-student research. Past faculty-student research has included: biological transport of iron, synthesis of tem-perature stable polymers, laser optical studies of new excited states in molecules, aluminum enolate reac-tions, removal of atmospheric pollution by precip-itation, and preparation of mixed transition metal clusters.

With increasing societal complex-ity, the demand for effective com-municators is being expressed dra-matically. Acknowledging training to the liberal arts tradition, and rec-ognizing contemporary societal de-mands for enlightened, skilled com-municators, the Department of Communication offers a curriculum to enhance a student's understand-ing of the human communication process as well as to develop in pur-pose and context (interpersonal re-lations, small group interactions, face-to-face persuasive presenta-tions, electronically mediated mass contexts) are addressed through the course offerings. Students interest-ed in improving their communica-tion effectiveness as a means of in-creasing their overall success in disciplines outside the communica-tion department are welcome to draw on communication course of-ferings and laboratories to serve their individual needs. Professional plans in broadcasting, closed-circuit television, public relations, human resource development, and government often stem from oppor-tunities provided to communication majors.

Computer science is a young and rapidly de-veloping discipline. In recognition of this fact, the Department of Computer Science is committed to providing the student with a program which in-cludes the basic fundamentals of the field and which allows him the flexibility to pursue in depth many of the diverse areas into which computer science is expanding. In addition, computer science interrelates heavily with other disciplines, both in its application and its construction. It is our belief that this interrelation can best be emphasized by the establishment of direct links with these other fields such as joint sharing of faculty and programs and by exposing computer science students to the fundamental core of knowledge in closely related disciplines.

The Department of Economics and Business Administration stresses both theoretical and applied concepts of economics and business. Economic theory and quantitative skills serve as the cornerstone for advanced work in economics and management. Students majoring in the department actively participate in field trips, internships with local business firms, and independent research projects. They meet frequently with visiting business executives and distinguished economists. Courses in investments, real estate, business law and advanced accounting are taught by adjunct faculty members, who are full-time specialists in their respective fields. Computer applications and simulations, role-playing management games and business case studies enliven the classroom work.

EDUCATION

The Education Department seeks to prepare students to teach in the elemen-tary and secondary schools of our nation. To fulfill the requirements for graduation and certification, each student planning on a professional teaching career must complete a major in an academic field, a minor and the professional education se-quence. This sequence introduces the stu-dent to the theoretical foundations of cre-ative and responsible teaching and, simultaneously, helps the prospective teacher acquire those teaching skills that make for effective teaching. An integrat-ed field-theory approach to teacher prep-aration permeates the entire professional education sequence. Students become progressively more involved in field ex-periences and participate in increasingly more complex teaching styles as they proceed through the program. This prep-aration model has been replicated with enthusiasm throughout the country.

The program of the Department of English is designed to meet the needs of the student who wishes to pursue the study of English language and literature in depth or the student who wishes to develop special skills in the art of writing, either for their intrinsic worth or in preparation for a specific career. The major programs reflect these different objectives. The department is, first, a department of lit-erature. Literature presents to readers perennial human situations and issues — problems of identity, purpose, relationship, and meaning. It enables one imaginatively to enter and share the experiences of other persons: to feel what was felt by people in earlier eras, distant lands, entirely other patterns of life and juxtapose those feelings with their own. It is also a department of language: of the study of the English language and of language as used in writing. Understanding the history and nature of language is basic to effective verbal communication and to good verbal artistry. The courses in expository and creative writing begin with and build on a knowledge of language and lead to increased skill in using language effectively. While the curriculum provides those who wish to teach or attend graduate school the specialized courses they need, it also seeks to meet the needs of students pursuing the broad aims of a liberal education. By helping develop students' abilities to read, to think and to express them-selves logically and coherently, the curriculum at the same time helps to prepare them for careers in fields like gov-ernment service, law, business, librarianship, and the min-istry that emphasize such skills.

The geological sciences are in a "Golden Age" because of renewed interest in short supply of natural resources, continuing concerns with environmental quality, and renais-sance in thinking about the way the Earth works. Geoscientists today are making important contributions through research in petroleum ex-ploration, mining, geochemistry, geophysics, paleontology, oceanog-raphy, plate tectonics, and environ-mental geology as they further our understanding of the Earth and its complex history. Traditionally, the training of geologists has included a large measure of field experience. Hope College is ideally situated for field studies of glacial geology, sedi-mentology, geomorphology, and limnology. To broaden the spectrum of field experience, trips are com-monly taken to examine the geol-ogy of other areas in Michigan and adjacent states. Our students have also participated in field courses in

such diverse localities as the Col-orado Rockies, the Swiss Alps, and the Virgin Islands. In addition to these trips, the annual spring Re-gional Geology trip has given stu-dents the opportunity to observe in detail the geology of Jamaica, the Appalachians, the Gulf Coast, the Black Hills, the Grand Canyon, the Florida Keys, and other areas. We are well-equipped for teaching and research. In addition to an ample number of dissecting and petro-graphic microscopes, the depart-ment has a fluid inclusion heating and cooling stage, x-ray diffraction and fluorescence apparatus, thin section preparation laboratory, a large stream table and sedimenta-tion tank, equipment for seismic ex-ploration and soil resistivity testing, research microscopes, and a 35' steel-hulled research vessel with depth sounding and sediment sam-pling devices.

M A T H The mathematics program in-

cludes courses in mathematical analysis, algebra, and statistics as well as a number of courses with a computer science orientation. A DEC VAX 11/750 computer network gives students access to a large batch and time sharing computer system. A Tektronix 4051 Graphic System that has built-in computa-tional power and can also be used as a graphics terminal is available for student research. A microcom-puter laboratory contains TRS-80 Model III and Apple II Color microcomputers. These computers are used in several courses and are available for all students to use. The department continues to offer a strong program in mathematics which prepares a student for grad-uate school in leading universities in this country. Students with im-mediate vocational interests have found that the mathematics major provides an excellent background for a position in industry, teaching, business, or government. Students are encouraged to have a strong component in an area in which mathematics is used.

History is the study of the human past. It is the foundation for under-standing how we came to be what we are. Because the record is often crowd-ed and contradictory, history is a dis-cipline that depends upon critical thinking and careful evaluation of ev-idence. These are skills that lie at the heart of liberal arts education and that are vitally important to students pre-paring for careers in such fields as law, government, journalism, and ed-

ucation. History staff members bring varied backgrounds to their teaching. All have sustained their research interests through work in numerous foreign and domestic manuscript repositories such as the National Archives. Extended stays in Japan, the Soviet Union, Austria, England, and Yugoslavia help to assure both currency in scholarship and vitality in the classroom.

The Department of Music at Hope College has two aims — to supply the liberal arts student with an elec-tive musical background which will assist him/her in being aware and appreciative of the growing musical heritage of civilization, and to train the student who wishes to make mu-sic his individual vocation. A stu-dent in the first group will find am-ple opportunity to enrich his/her musical knowledge by enrolling in the Introduction to Music courses, in any of the Applied Music courses, or by means of membership in any of

the music ensembles. Students in the second group, if they desire to teach music, can elect either the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Educa-tion or the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education degrees, permitting them to teach music from kindergarten through the twelfth grade; the degree will not be awarded until the student has gained Michigan provisional teacher certification: if students desire to be performing artists, they should select the Bachelor of Music in Per-formance program.

The Department of Nursing seeks to provide broad educational and professional experiences within the context of a Christian liberal arts education. The program is designed to prepare beginning practitioners of nursing who are capable of in-tegrating their knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide quality nursing care for people of all ages and in a variety of settings. The baccalaureate nursing program is offered cooperatively with Calvin College in Grand Rapids. One de-partment, known as the Hope-Calvin Department of Nursing, in-corporates students from both Hope

and Calvin Colleges in junior and senior level nursing courses. Stu-dents enrolled in the nursing pro-gram engage in a wide variety of clinical nursing experiences. But-terworth Hospital and Holland Community Hospital serve as Clin-ical Education Centers, providing opportunities to care for people who need the knowledge and skills of the nursing profession. Pine Rest Chris-tian Hospital provides for learning experiences in Psychiatric/mental health nursing and a variety of community agencies offer students an opportunity to care for clients outside of a hospital setting.

PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is a style of thinking and an historical tradition oi thought; or rather, it is several styles (analytical, speculative, descriptive) and several traditions (eastern, western). It is at once the questioning search for meaning and truth throughout the whole of human experience and the history of such critical reflection. We engage in the history of philosophy and through disciplined reflection on the substantive issues we have inherited from the tradition. This contributes to the overall goals of l iberal education in at least three ways: 1. To l ive as free and responsible members of our society requires

an understanding of our past as an inheritance to be gratefully received and critically carried on. Since philosophy is an important part of our cultural heritage, its study belongs to the preparation lor thoughtful citizenship in the broadest sense of the term. 2. Phil-osophical questions, whatever their specific content, have a ten-dency to become ways of asking the question. Who am I? Con-sequently the study of philosophy relates directly to the quest for personal identity which is often particularly intense in early adult-hood. This does not presuppose that one starts with nothing in a way of answers, however. For the thinker who comes to philosophy as a Christian, for example, reflection takes the form of faith seeking understanding. 3. The roles of other disciplines and areas oi experience in enriching human life can often be enhanced through deliberate reflection on the goals, methods, and fundamental con-cepts they involve. This occurs in such sub-disciplines of philosophy as philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, and philosophy oi art (aesthetics).

The curriculum of the Department of Physical Education and Recreation is de-signed to provide the undergraduate stu-dent a strong liberal arts background in addition to specific areas of expertise with-in physical education, recreation and/or dance. To be liberally educated, persons should be knowledgeable about their bodies, good nutrition, and the benefits of a habit of exercise. Additionally, it would seem important for each undergraduate to develop enough skill in one or two carry-over activities to find those activities fun and physiologically and psychologically beneficial.

The Department of Physics oilers a comprehensive program ior those desiring a career in physics, engineering, or all ied natural sciences. The physics course structure allows students to tailor their program to their main interests. Opportunities ior research participation are available to a l l physics students at al l class levels during both the academic year and the summer. Students are presently engaged in nuclear physics experiments, heavy ion physics experiments, mini-computer control oi in-dustrial processes, industrial process control experiments, surface analysis using alpha particle beams from the Hope accelerator, and chemical analysis using proton beams from the Hope accelerator. The undergraduate research program centers around the 2.5 million volt Van de Graaf accelerator and the facilities for industrial process control. The accelerator laboratory has a full complement of nuclear particle detectors and electronic instrumentation, and special equipment can be designed and con-structed in the fully equipped metal shop and electronics laboratory.

Organizing a local Holland precinct, sponsoring a model United Nations for high school students, meeting with prom-inent campus visitors, organizing a "get-out-to-vote" cam-paign among coUege students over the "age of majority," and serving as youth chairpersons of county, congressional district, and state political party committees are a few of the activities students majoring in political science have engaged in. The academic program of the Department of Political Science seeks to provide the student with a sys-tematic understanding of government, political behavior and political institutions in the local, state, national and international areas. To accomplish this goal students ma-joring in political science take such courses as "History of Pol i t ical Theory," "Comparat ive Government ," "American Political Parties," and "International Law." In addition to these theoretical courses, students enroll for academic credit in departmental programs which give the student a first-hand encounter with political processes both at home and abroad. For example, they work in political campaigns, intern in local and county governments, ob-serve national presidential conventions, and work as Con-gressional aides.

The broad academic purpose of the study of religion at the college level is to understand the Chris-tian faith and the role of religion in human culture. To accomplish that end, the Department of Re-ligion is divided into five areas of academic investigation: Biblical studies, historical studies, theo-logical studies, world religions, and religion in culture. While each student majoring in religion is required to enroU in advanced level courses in each of the five areas, most religion majors con-centrate in one area and devel-op, thereby, a considerable ex-pertise. Many students have found the religion major an ex-cellent way of focusing their lib-eral arts education at Hope Col-lege.

The Department of Sociology and Social Work pro-vides students with a variety of courses in two pre-professional "tracks." The Sociology track prepares students who plan to enter graduate or professional school in the areas of sociology, law, urban planning, the ministry, and numerous other fields. The Social Work track, which is granted in conjunction with the Department of Psychology, prepares students who are intending to join the "helping professions," either di-rectly after graduation or following graduate studies in social work, counseling, law, or ministry. Sociology can be defined as the scientific study of human socie-ties. In order for students to engage in this study, they will be introduced to major theoretical and meth-odological issues of the discipline. Students will be able to choose from a wide selection of topical courses. These courses bring various theoretical and meth-odological understandings to the analysis of specific social structures and processes. The Social Work ma-jor, a composite of Psychology and Sociology, is de-signed for students who are intending to enter pro-fessions which require direct contact with people concerning their social and personal welfare. This major builds upon a broad liberal arts base and ex-amines: 1) the philosophies of social welfare; b) var-ious theoretical perspectives of the sociology, psy-chology, and the other social sciences; and c) the complementary utility and integrative properties of the various theoretical perspectives.

Course offerings in theatre, along with the department's co-curricular production program, are designed to provide the liberal arts students with knowledge of and experience in an art form which has played an important role in our cultural his-tory as well as in contemporary so-ciety. Performance or laboratory experience makes possible an ap-preciation of the art which can be derived only from direct participa-tion. The practical experience of working together in a disciplined collaborative art facUitates one's understanding of oneself and of oth-er people. The theatre program is further intended to enhance the cul-tural life of the community through the presentation of plays of value from a historical, contemporary, lit-erary, or entertainment point of

IN MEMORIAM The people of Hope lost two faculty mem-

bers over the summer of 1966. Doth were well liked and respected by the students and their peers. The first being Eleanor Raima on June 25. She died in Holland after an extended illness. She had taught piano at Hope since 1964 in the position of a teaching assistant and was re-cently appointed an adjunct assistant professor of music. Mrs. Raima graduated from Calvin College and did her graduate work at San Diego State University and the University of Iowa. Before coming to Hope, Mrs. Raima taught at West Side Christian Junior High in Grand Rapids, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and at

Blue Lake Music Camp.

The second professor to pass away was Michael B. Retrovich on July 11 at Butterworth Hospital following a brain hemorrhage. He had been a member of the history department since 1966. He was a scholar of East European studies and an internationally respected interpreter of Serbo-Croatian, the language of Yugo-

slavia. Retrovich came to the United States at the age of 21

and eventually became a naturalized citizen. He worked as an escort interpreter for the U.S. Department of State for five years before joining the Hope faculty. He taught classes in European history, with a spe-cialization in Balkan and Russian history. He is re-sponsible for the May term to Yugoslavia. His academic rank was that of an associate professor of history.

Michael Retrovich served as an interpreter to the United States for two Rresidents. The first time was for Rresident Jimmy Carter in 1978 when the late Yu-goslavian Rresident Marshall Tito was visiting. The sec-ond time was in 1984 for Rresident Reagan during a state visit by Yugoslavian Rrime Minister Milka Raninc.

Retrovich was born in Zemun, Yugoslavia. He stud- j ied industrial design and English in London. He then studied at Shepherd College in West Virginia and later received his master's degree in international relations and his Rh.D. in history from the University of Chicago.
