Sophomores Swim in '76 Pull
The annua l ba t t le be tween fo r ty -
two f reshman a n d sophomore men,
common ly k n o w n as the Pull, came
to a c l imax O c t o b e r 1 on the bank
of the Black River. A f te r a s t rugg le
of one hour and fo r t y - two minutes,
the f reshman class, coached by the
twice v ictor ious Juniors, w o n . The
v ic tory ma rked on ly the ninth loss
f o r a n u p p e r c l a s s t e a m in m o r e
than th i r ty years.

Oc tober 15 -17 , was the occasion
for several special events of interest
to the col lege communi ty . O p e n i n g the weekend 's activit ies
was the dedicat ion ceremony for
the V a n V l e c k H a l l h i s t o r i c a l
marker . S h o r t l y a f t e r w a r d s g r o u n d
b r e a k i n g ce remon ies f o r H o p e ' s
new Physical Education Center took
place. The $ 3 . 2 mil l ion structure is
expected to be comple ted in ear ly
1978 . The weekend was h ighl ighted by
Hope's 23-8 victory over A lma .

Cindy Bere were c rowned Home-
coming King and Queen.

The ma jo r news items of the year t ended to be a series o f " m a s t s : " the most consecut ive days of sub-f reez ing wea the r , the most snow, the most peop le ever k i l led in a p lane crash.
The snow was a story f i t fo r tel l-ing g randch i ld ren . The first f lakes fe l l in m id -Oc tobe r a n d con t inued i n t e r m i t t e n t l y t h r o u g h F e b r u a r y . The b l i z za rd of Janua ry 2 7 - 2 9 was the " b i g s t o r m . " So much snow fel l tha t classes at H o p e were cance led on Janua ry 28 for the f irst t ime in 1 8 years. As if the snow a n d co ld w e r e n ' t enough , there was a natu-ra l ene rgy crisis a t the same t ime w i th m a n y factor ies f o rced to shut d o w n or d r a s t i c a l l y r e d u c e the i r consumpt ion o f energy . O h i o was one of the states hardest hit w i th M i c h i g a n fee l ing very l i t t le of it.
W i n t e r a lso b rough t w i th it the th rea t o f Swine Flu. A massive ino-cu la t ion p r o g r a m was under taken , b u t t h e d a n g e r o u s s i d e - e f f e c t s exper ienced by some of the immun-ized led to the pro jec t be ing scrap-
ped. The rise o f J immy Carter f r om the
obscure " J i m m y w h o ? " o f Plains, G e o r g i a , to the President of the Uni ted States d o m i n a t e d the head-lines much o f the year . O n c e in o f f i ce his new pol ic ies, bo th domes-t ic a n d f o r e i g n , b r o u g h t f o r t h a g rea t dea l o f cont roversy.

In spite of ear ly season losses,
the Flying Dutchmen f in ished wi th a
6 - 3 r e c o r d . Bo th o f f e n s i v e a n d
defensive squads were h ighly ra ted
all year . In the Homecoming g a m e for the
M I A A Champ ionsh ip , Hope lost a
close bat t le w i th A lb i on , 1 4 -3 .

year 's seniors f in ished w i th a 29-6-
1 overa l l record , g o o d for two first
