Wandoan’s 2014 Miss Showgirl, Sarah Stiller, is preparing to make an appearance in the ‘Queensland Country Life’ Miss Showgirl State Finals, to be held at the Brisbane Exhibition early in August.

Sarah recently won the South West Regional Finals which were held at Dirranbandi against seven other entrants. Sarah, who has grown up at Guluguba, said she is excited to be a part of the State Finals at the Ekka.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity and I’m really looking forward to meeting the other finalists and to experiencing what is on offer,” Sarah said.

“The Miss Showgirl Competition is a fantastic way to become involved with your local show, as well as providing a great opportunity to travel and to meet like-minded people.”

Sarah and 10 other finalists from across the state will tour the ‘Queensland Country Life’ office, have afternoon tea with her Governor Excellency at Government House and lunch at Parliament House with the Speaker. They will visit the Childhood Cancer support premises and several sponsors located throughout the city, as well as sash bulls in the main arena and taste the best strawberries and cream the Ekka has to offer.

Nel Blackley from Taroom will also make a final’s appearance in Brisbane, after winning the prestigious dark rich fruit cake competition at the South West finals. Del Kehl from Wallumbilla was judged as runner-up.

Kimberley Hay, the current Treasurer of the Taroom Show Society, was runner-up to Dirranbandi’s Benn Wilson in the Rural Ambassador Competition. Taroom supporters had even more reason to celebrate after it was announced they will hold the Regional Finals in 2016.

Miles Community Investment Plan: Building A Strong Local Vision Through United ActionMiles District Chamber of Commerce has recently received the much awaited first ever Miles Community Investment Plan. The plan aims to deliver a range of community projects and initiatives within the next five years.

The plan, developed by Urbis, a national firm specialising in planning and development of communities and cities, has assisted our community through consultation and site visits to map out what is required and how to help make it happen.

Miles Community Members, Business, Industry and Western Downs Regional Council have supported the development of the Miles Community Investment Plan by way of financial support. Miles District Chamber of Commerce wishes to express its thanks for this support; without it, the plan would not have been possible.

PROPOSED LEGACY PROJECTS FOR THE MILES COMMUNITY

There are a number of exciting legacy projects that are identified in the plan. Now it is about rolling them out! Applying for and securing the funding to help realise the larger projects and initiatives, includes things like:

Anzac Park Transformation:

• Refurbishment of Anzac Park• Maintain integrity and respect of the Anzac

memorial• Create a must-stop destination• Option for Pop-up tenancies • New/refurbished amenities• Onsite events infrastructure• Play and public art areas• Additional shady trees, seating• Adaptive use of railway area

Miles Family Portal:

• A family-friendly, online information and advice portal; hosted by Chamber of Commerce

• Information for new residents• A published Miles annual event program

with opportunities to try new activities• Advisory service for businesses seeking to

attract and retain staff• Links to the council, Murilla Community

Centre, schools and other services

STAYING CONNECTED

Young entrepreneurs program:

• Investing in the development of young people through a Rising Stars program

• Initiation of an incubator fund for start-up grants

• Support with developing/decision-making model around the incubator fund

• Mentoring support for young people involved in small business

• Encouraging youth to act as change agents for the Miles Community

• Focus on youth aged 15–30 years old

MAKING IT HAPPEN

Youth-friendly places:

• Create safe, attractive and flexible young-people’s places

• Facilitate activities to help engage/maintain the youth population

• A monthly young people’s night at the local café with live music, affordable food and no structured activity

• A quarterly “food and fun” market at Anzac Park with mobile food vans and local live music

• Work with surrounding towns such as Chinchilla and Roma on a roving market

Dogwood tourism gateway:

• Focus on Miles as the ‘Gateway to the South-West’ region’s many natural and historic attractions

• Develop a program of local activities and events

• Continue investment in Miles Historical Village

• Investigate tourist camping options• Increase the capacity of local operators

through training and certificate programs• Plan for upgrades to key town sites

A Note from the Team…..The Western Downs has some exciting events occurring around the region in the next month. Most notably, Dalby is holding the Delicious & DeLIGHTful festival on the 23rd–24th August (p8), and the Beef, Bells & Bottle Tree Festival is scheduled for the 4th–14th September in Miles (p17–20). We encourage you all to visit these great local events, support your communities and have fun while meeting some new, friendly people!

Ann had the pleasure of meeting with Chris and the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies this month, and she found that not only do they stock everything you need for the garden, but they have a wonderful range of gift and housewares available too! The Dalby Harvest now has a new home in the main street of Dalby, and Amy is loving the opportunity to work in the town! Taroom RodeoThe 60th Annual Taroom Rodeo had all the thrills and spills that you would expect, but two new events in this year’s program proved definite crowd pleasers amongst all the old favourites.

The inaugural local steer riding competition, formally known as the club challenge, attracted eager eyes as locals in teams of three rode to earn points for their favourite watering hole. The clubs represented included the Leichhardt Hotel Motel, the Taroom Bowls Club, the Cattle Camp Motel, the Taroom Golf Club and the Dawson Jockey Club.

Ned Hay, Stuart Hay and Chloe Browning put in a spectacular effort for the Bowls Club, earning bragging rights as winners. They donated their $1000 prize money to the Taroom Palliative Care group.

The new Iron Man All Round Champion Buckle was hotly contested, as competitors gave it their best in the rope, stock and rough riding events. The event was named in honour of Jim Maguire, a Taroom cowboy, who became one of Australia’s best. After points were calculated, 17 year old Jake Malay-Murphy was awarded the $500 prize money and a crafted Ride Tuff buckle made by Eddie Fisher.

To help celebrate 60 years of rodeo in Taroom, the majority of local businesses participated in a new concept where shop owners decorated their premises or set up a display. The APRA Rodeo Queen of Australia, Mallory Doyle from Ballarat, Victoria, judged the shops and chose the Taroom Gift Shop as the winner.

Organisers and Committee members were thrilled with the overall success and support for this year’s event and would like to thank everyone who helped to make it such a success.

Noonga Notes Pie WarmerA pie warmer was recently purchased through “Caring for our Communities” Grant from the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. It was put to good use on the recent tennis day and is a valuable asset to catering at the hall, including the upcoming Seniors’ Day.

Seniors’ DayPlanning is well underway for the Noonga Seniors’ Week Celebration on Tuesday, 19th August. The day is being hosted by the Association and sponsored by COTA Queensland. The itinerary for the day is as follows -

School Holidays Tennis TournamentThe Noonga Community Association recently held a School holiday’s tennis Championships Tournament at the Noonga Tennis Courts. Twenty five players in 3 divisions enjoyed a full day of tennis, with some of the younger ones learning the intricacies of the scoring and also moving about on the tennis court. Singles and an American tournament style doubles gave everyone a chance to improve their skills and the unexpectedness of the traditional ant bed Noonga Courts also made the day interesting to those unused to the playing surface. All in all, a good day was had by all and ‘thank you’, Polly Leahy, for organising the day!

Dalby Gears Up for Dalby’s Delicious & DeLIGHTful 2014 FestivalDalby Welcoming Community Committee along with its Principal Partner, Arrow Energy, are busily preparing for the fifth Delicious & DeLIGHTful Festival to be held on Saturday, 23rd and Sunday, 24th August. For the first time, the Festival will extend into a two day event.

On the Saturday morning, Cunningham Street will come alive with buskers competing in a busk-off for a place in the Busking Final to be held that night. You will have the opportunity to applaud your favourite artist after the Lantern Parade.

The Festival begins at 3:00 pm at Anderson Park with a Citizenship Ceremony being held for a large group of people becoming Australian citizens. This will be followed by multicultural entertainment which is sure to delight the crowd. A large range of children’s activities will keep the youngsters occupied.

The range of cultures providing delicious food to be sampled has been extended this year to include: Korean, Spanish, Indonesian and Vietnamese as well as the ones that have been so popular in previous years – Indian, South African, Italian, Dutch, German, Chinese, Hungarian, Filipino, English, African and American.

Four hundred small lanterns have been delivered for children, adults and groups to decorate in a multicultural theme and these will be carried in the unique and spectacular Lantern Parade that meanders along beautiful Myall Creek after dark. Complimenting these will be the big and colourful lanterns provided by LightnUp to add to the visual spectacle that celebrates our diverse culture and that people talk about for weeks each year.

Sunday morning will provide a perfect opportunity to relax with a gourmet brunch between 9:00 am

and 12:00 pm and to listen to the Dalby Jazz Band as well as the performers from “Music of the Surat”. Be part of the launch of the CD from that program sponsored by Arrow Energy. Creative artists have also been invited to bring out their easels and brushes etc. and to add to the spectacle. There will be an opportunity to vote for your favourite artist and to view their works.

MAB is a four month program that will enable you to achieve more from your craft. It’s personalised help, mentoring and business education that addresses the areas where you need support to grow your money making opportunities. Enjoy developing your skills and being part of the artisan community!

The program will cover all aspects of your artisan business including:

Developing an achievable plan to help get you to where you want to be with your craft Understanding what website / digital technologies will work best for you Creating your artisan profile (the image you present to buyers) Understanding why your customers buy from you and how you can achieve more orders Working out pricing that makes sense to you and the buyer

But more than this, you’ll have... An experienced business mentor working with you one-on-one Opportunities to attend markets and exhibitions Group learning session and involvement in collaborative creative projects that will inspire you

Wandoan Ambulance Open DayThe Wandoan Ambulance Station held an Open Day on July 17 to display their new equipment and to proudly introduce the latest members of their team.

School students and locals alike met the new officer in charge, Bruce Chalmers, and they also had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the new $30,000 mannequin.

Through funds raised solely in the community, the Wandoan depot was able to purchase the state-of-the-art equipment. The mannequin will allow local officers to train onsite and allow them to fine tune their skills whenever time is available.

President of the Wandoan Local Ambulance Committee, Frieda Hoffman, said the officers can practise anything relating to first aid on the mannequin.

“They can do just about anything, from cardio arrests and blood pressure, to injections and resuscitation. The technology is just incredible,” Mrs Hoffman said.

“The Committee has always maintained that funds raised in the district stay in the district, and this Open Day was one way to show everyone what they have achieved.”

“We had our new car on display and Wandoan is fortunate enough to now have two vehicles. We were also able to open up the centre itself for people and students to have a look through. We’re proud that it is set up for relieving officers to have their whole family stay with them if need be,” Mrs Hoffman said.

“We encourage anyone interested to join our local Ambulance Committee. You get a great

insight into what the officers are doing and it’s wonderful to be a part of something special in the community.”

Queensland Country Women’s AssociationMiles Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association was formed in June, 1924 by Mrs Farmer and Mrs Sterne. Following the formation of the Association on 11 August, 1922, Mrs Hake was the foundation President followed a few months later by Mrs Donnelly. Miss Martin was the first Secretary / Treasurer. Mrs Seammell was to follow as President and Miss Rayner as Secretary / Treasurer.

Meetings were first held in Mrs Lynagh’s, then Mrs Hughes’ tea shop, then at Mrs Thorley’s Boarding House. In 1937, the meetings were held in the residence of the Australia Bank of Commerce. On the 21st July, 1927, all buildings in that part of the main street were burnt to the ground and it is believed the early record books of the branch were lost. Later meetings were held in the old hall and on very hot days on the footpath outside the hall to the interest of passers-by.

During the 2nd World War, members joined the ACF and dropped normal activities. After this period, it would seem the branch nearly collapsed but later was built up to a membership of 78.

Members worked to have improvements made to the waiting room at the Railway Station and also helped to support the QCWA Warwick girl’s hostel and the Lota home for country women.

A very active ‘Younger Set’ was also supported by the parent branch in this time.

Negotiations were started with the Railway Department to lease a block of land, with the ultimate aim to build rest rooms. In February, 1949, after much fund raising, the rooms were officially opened; the building cost 1,000 pounds and only 400 pounds had to be borrowed which was paid back very quickly. On the 24th October, 1964, a new room for Maternal and Child Health was opened. Further additions were added over time and it is equipped for emergency accommodation. The Branch later raised the money and bought the

land from the Railway so the Association has an asset.

1962 was a busy and happy year. The Branch entertained the Governor, Sir Henry Abel Smith and Lady May to morning tea in the rooms. The Division Annual Meeting was held in the new Civic Centre in Miles in November with 170 members and on the same evening, entertained Dame Alice Berry in the Rest Rooms. They catered for Anzac Day luncheon, weddings, street stalls, held first aid lectures and a successful cookery contest and had the rooms painted inside and out.

1967, we were honoured with a visit from Mrs Hallion, State President of CWA of South Australia, accompanied by Mrs Speed; surrounding branches joined us for this day. Also that same year, the Branch gave half of all its proceeds from functions to the Miles Hospital towards a humidicrib.

The Branch continues to support local needs and also the wider focus of the QCWA in raising money for such things as drought and flood relief. We study an International Country and participate in such things as cooking, handcraft and photography competitions. We raise money to assist the Associated Country Women of the World in their quest to assist women in the poorer countries of the world to raise their standard of living by starting small business.

Most importantly, we are a group of women who meet to uphold the Association’s Objectives to support women and children, be it with a friendly cuppa and chat, raising money for projects or lobbying Government for change. We would be happy to welcome anyone who wants to join us!

Successful Succession for Envision PartnersOn Tuesday, 1st July, customers, team members and friends of EnVision Partners gathered to celebrate Gerard O’Sullivan’s retirement from the firm after 30 years in the accounting industry.

Gerard has overseen the firm from being himself with five team members to a two partner firm employing 28 team members with offices in Chinchilla and Hervey Bay. The firm has developed from a traditional compliance tax advisory firm to a taxation and business consulting firm, advising business owners in not just taxation, but also in profitability and wealth creation, business management and succession planning.

EnVision Partners has been planning for Gerard’s retirement over the past two years, enabling a smooth transition for customers from Gerard to their new advisors. This planning has ensured that EnVision Partners has maintained its capacity and technical skills, so as to continue to be able to present its quality service offerings to customers.

The accounting industry has seen huge changes over the past 30 years. Gerard noted that the most significant change in the accounting industry has been the impact of information technology. In the 80s, information technology was in its infancy and electronic records were supported by huge paper files. Most practices had a computer. Now each employee has one and the offices are largely paperless. Snail mail has largely been replaced by email which is now being supplemented with secure client portals.

EnVision Partners is indebted to Gerard for his commitment and passion to the firm, which has been a major factor as to how the firm has developed to what it is today.

The team members of EnVision Partners collaboratively agree that Gerard has been inspirational in their individual development, has provided each member with opportunities to enhance their careers and has left them with fun memories as they worked beside him.

What Can We Do to Maximise Fertility?The Maiden HeiferStart at her birth! Colostrum volume and quality has a massive impact on a calf’s immunity. Respiratory and gastro-intestinal diseases reduce growth rate and survival. Dietary protein and energy establish calf growth rate, before and after weaning. Therefore, nutritional care of the calf affects liveweight weight at puberty. Ideally, a heifer is exposed to a bull on her third cycle after puberty. If she is not properly grown, she will either skip a calf her first year, or calve late, which puts her behind the following year.

The money lost by missing a calf is how much you can afford to spend on raising the heifer. Following this rule will always return a positive gross margin. What is that number for you?

The Return HeiferWell managed dairy cows ovulate 14 – 21 days post calving, then 16 – 19 days later. Brahman females return to oestrus 6 months after calving, whilst 4 months is the average calving interval for tropical composites. Knowing these figures helps to manage the herd so mating can be managed. Early weaning calves off Bos indicus derived females can shorten the calving interval.

Heifers, well grown prior to first mating, have reduced requirements for skeletal and muscle development before the second calf. Again, consider how much you can spend on preparing the maiden heifer, because it is a wise investment that is still paying off, even on the second breeding.

Conception FailureOne main reason for reduced fertility is embryo loss. A study with Bos taurus heifers found that 32% of embryos were lost before day 14 (early embryonic loss), and 4.2% lost between day 32 and birth (late embryonic loss). Cows which lose an embryo before day 16 show no clinical signs other than normal return to oestrus.

Other reasons for reduced fertility are:

• Fertilisation failure• Body condition at calving• Periparturient disease (dystocia, twins, retained membrane etc)• The bull factor • Cow age• Sub-clinical and clinical disorders or disease • Endometritis• Mastitis• Heat stress• Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) or pestivirus

The Action Plan

We have control over our animals’ nutrition and health. After the breed is chosen and the bull is put to the cow, the genetics are set. My rules for breeding success are:

1. Check the bull – is the working gear in good order and his shots up to date?

2. Check the cow – is she in good condition and are her shots up to date?3. Check the cow again – are you sure she is in good order?

Cow condition has a huge influence on conception rate at first mating. The table in this article, from a Northern Hemisphere study, shows how cow condition and calving interval influence readiness for the bull. Early calving cows can afford to be slightly thinner; they have more time to commence oestrus.

There is no need to harp on the value of feeding cows. Well fed and well supplemented cows have good body condition, good trace nutrient status, a good immune system, cycle stronger, develop more viable embryos, grow healthier foetuses, produce better colostrum and more milk of high quality. The value of offering a high quality supplement goes a long way to achieving excellent reproductive efficiency and therefore a profitable business.

In your Recent School Screenings, why did you include the Left Right Reversal Test? What has that got to do with Vision?

The Left Right Test was designed to identify children who have difficulties in the recognition of object, letter, number and word reversals. Scores can be compared to those of children of the same age, providing an accurate indication of performance compared to peers.

While this test does not measure the important skill of being able to see things (visual acuity), it does provide invaluable information regarding the brain’s ability to process visual information. Deficiencies in these skills have been linked to problems with learning to read and to underachievement at school.

In my opinion, the Jordan Left Right Reversals test is an effective screening tool to assist in the early detection of learning disabilities. It is certainly a worthy inclusion in any school based screening and is an important part of my comprehensive vision assessment.

Anti-Aging = The Amla Berry

Much of what I write is inspired by a brilliant blog called My World Organic, It has provided me with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our health. This month they discussed the Amla Berry and after reading it I could not resist sharing some of the information with you. The Amla Berry is one of Mother Nature’s greatest hits; a multi-tasking, incredibly therapeutic fruit that we utilise in River Veda’s Replenish Anti-Aging skincare range as an important ingredient to assist the skin to glow and look youthful and vibrant.

Revered for thousands of years across Asia for its healing powers, Western scientists and medical experts have also taken greater note of the berry in recent years, thanks to a series of studies which have confirmed the extraordinary range of health

benefits it delivers. As a skincare ingredient, for example, Amla has been extensively clinically tested, with results showing it can assist the skin stay healthy and youthful looking.

Scientific Research

Taroom Polocrosse

At the beginning of July, the Taroom Polocrosse Club held their Annual Carnival, which saw 23 senior teams and four junior teams from 12 clubs participate.

In front of a strong local crowd, the Taroom Club celebrated several wins throughout the different competitions.

The A grade final between Taroom and Chinchilla proved a thriller. The commentator made it loud and clear that the Taroom team, which consisted of Brett Edmistone, Edwina Keating, Erin Dempsey, Rodney Nixon, Nick Lindley and Tim Wright, had to ‘push like a stick shift D8 dozer’ to achieve the win.

Several Taroom players were further awarded for their efforts, including Nick Lindley who was named the best A grade ‘Player of the Carnival’.

Erin Dempsey was presented with trophies for the Best Lady Player and the Best Horse, while the most consistent Taroom player was awarded to Edwina Keating.

In the B grade competition, Taroom Two were runners up, while Taroom Three won the E grade. In the Junior Competition, Taroom placed first, third and fourth. Cameron Keating was awarded the best Junior Boy Player.

Club President, Tim Wright, said it was a very successful weekend and ‘thanks’ had to go to the players, sponsors, and everyone else who helped to prepare and to run such a smooth carnival!

“We had a good roll up of spectators to watch the games on both days. Local support is always appreciated,” Mr Wright said.

“The Toyota tug and the tug-of-war novelty games were good fun on the Saturday night and it provided some different entertainment. It was a great job by Taroom Polocrosse Club members to get the ‘Coolabah Flats’ ready for play and the facilities ready for a carnival. I’d particularly like to thank all of our sponsors; without them, the weekend wouldn’t be possible,” Mr Wright said.

Zone 5 Under 10/ 35kg Junior Rugby League Carnival 2014

The Western Downs Under 10 35kg team travelled to St George this year, for the Annual Zone 5 Carnival.

Wynnum continued their dominance of the last few years to again win the carnival undefeated with a well drilled side.

The Western Downs Wild Dogs suffered a narrow loss against the hosts, Balonne Barwon, after conceding a try in the last seconds of a hard fought game. The local derby against Roma was also a thrilling game with Roma managing to hold off a strong finish from the Wild Dogs to also beat our boys by 2 points.

Western Downs recorded a good win in another tough game against Central Downs and also went on to defeat McIntyre, Charleville and Cunnamulla.

The Wild Dogs finished fourth out of the eight teams competing with all our

players improving during the week especially in their defensive game. More importantly, the boys have returned home to lift the standard of the local competition with knowledge gained from a week of intensive football against teams from other regions.

The team trophies went to Lachlan Smith, Caleb Colls and Brayden Doherty for Best Back, Best Forward, Most Improved respectively, while Harry Raff tackled strongly in the East verses West game.

With 5 players of the 15 still eligible for Under 10s next year, it was a good result for the boys who are sure to play more representative Rugby League for Western Downs.
