Why does the AtmosphericTemperature vary with Altitude?
Surface Heating
Ozone Heating: O3 + sunlight ® O + O2
Oxygen Heating: O2 + sunlight ® O + O
Ionization: O, N2, O2 + sunlight ® e + …
Focus of talk pretty much on thermal profile so:

The French lidar work found that MILs show change in height between winter and summer.
(natural to think of one mechanism, changing circumstances, but actually two different forcings - PW versus GW )

From LeBlanc and Hauchecorne [J. Geophys. Res., 1999]
Variations in MIL amplitudes over ten year duration show minimum amplitudes for summers.

Have MILs been observed from space?
Yes.

Simultaneous MF radarobservations suggest that thereversal of the phase for thediurnal tide allowed a majorincrease in the GW variance totake place. Sica et al interpretthis as indicating that theremoval of the wave filteringeffect imposed by the diurnaltidal wave unlocked the“floodgates” to GW wavesthat then encountered acritical layer and “broke”.

Summer PCL lidarobservations of the “upper”MIL show conclusiveindications of tidalmodulation of MIL peak, i.e.,the phase of the MIL peakfollows that of the diurnaltidal wave.

MIL development
As the atmosphere becomes unstable (R<0), the amplitudeof the MIL increases.
Another example of a sudden increase in T
