• Regime shift : (= phase shift) Face à un changement graduel d'un paramètre physico-chimique ou biologique de l'environnement, la réponse de la population ou de l'écosystème peut ne pas être graduelle, mais par sauts (sudden catastrophic change) (Rietkerk et al., 2004)
Ce saut est le regime shift.

• Phase de transition : Quand il y a modification dans les variables « forcées ». Ici = dynamique de populations. Décrit les changements des propriétés dynamiques et mécaniques des systèmes, potentiellement provoqué par un regime shift.
